Thorough bike mechanic
They may just be rentals, but he was quite thorough i adjusting them correctly. Geo: 43.1073, 12.4194
Meanwhile, back in the tiny Yotel room....
I zonked out for a solid 3 hours or so, and Dejo got some reasonable rest as well.
When we woke up to the alarm at about 7, Dejo was feeling quite a bit better, and we made our way to the terminal. Or rather, the lounge.
May I just say, the Air France staff was simply lovely and terribly helpful, just all around? I'm a fan.
We had a little breakfast, and then moved to a couple of armchairs to wait out the morning.
Now we had a little re-planning to do.
The plan had been to land in Rome, get to our hotel near the Colosseum, have a tiny tour of the area, and the next morning, take a train to Orvieto where we would pick up the car, and some bikes, both around 3 pm.
Since we were now landing in Rome that day around 3 pm, things needed to shift a little.
We decided to pick up the car at the Rome airport, and drive to Orvieto to pick up the bikes. Our contact at Randotrek bike touring was ever-so-accommodating, and we made the arrangements pretty easily.
I wish I could say the same about Hertz.
We had
plenty of time before our flight, so I left Dejo at the lounge, and headed for to find a Hertz desk. It's in another terminal, which is not a big deal, really. But after waiting in line in their office for half an hour (with no air conditioning, so I and my 48-hour-old clothes are getting riper by the minute), they said they couldn't change my reservation, I'd need to call. As it would cost me a pretty penny to turn on my US phone an make a call, I asked if she might let me use her phone. She dialed for me, and shot me a look as she helped the next customer in line.
The agent who finally answered put me on hold to check on something, and 10 minutes later, Ooops! The call was accidentally (I'm sure) disconnected.
Grumble mumph mutter......
So I schlepped back to terminal 2F, back through security and passport control (I now have 2 stamps showing I entered France, and none showing I entered Italy).
No worry, we'll change it when we get to Rome.
We did get on the flight, and up in the air, back down again in Rome, with no incident -- hooray!!
So, almost
A welcome beer
The food and beer were both really tasty, and not just because they weren't airport food. 48 hours after we left home, we arrived in Rome.
We were frankly a little skeptical as to whether our luggage would be there with us, seeing as how it had been put onto and taken off of 3 different flights yesterday. Imagine our delight when we saw not one, but both bags come up the belt!!
Bags on our backs, we set off for the car rental counter. Just follow the signs.
If we were on "The Amazing Race", the camera would have lingered on a shot of the sign that pointed us to the rental desks, while we followed the signs to the rental pickup garage.
We did finally find the place, and got the car set, and we were off!!!
We navigated our way to Bolsena to pick up the bikes, with very few missteps. The guys from Randotrek couldn't have been nicer, and soon enough, we had 2 bikes loaded not our car.
We drove to Perugia, where it was dark when we arrived. But we could see that this place was pretty great.
We enjoyed a really delicious meal in the hotel restaurant, and then sacked right out (after a shower and a change of clothes....what a lovely thing that is).
The morning
Our room
This was one of the lower category rooms -- still fantastic! view should be pretty amazing, I think......
