I created this travel blog for my family and friends. Although I wish you could be traveling with me, at least this way I can write down my inside jokes, and take pictures of awkward tourists that I know you would laugh at if you were with me! Read and enjoy!
Things I wish to accomplish while I'm on this journey:
-Experience the vineyards in Tuscany
-Learn as much as I can about olive oil and Italian cooking
-Be a traditional tourist in Rome
-Eat as much gelato as possible
-Wish for love in the Trevi Fountain
-Listen to Italians having conversation
-Keep my composure when I'm lost and no one speaks English to give me directions
-Drink. Wine.

Pisa to Calenzano to Florence I woke up early to explore more around Pisa and headed south in the afternoon. Calenzano is a small suburban town of Florence. I booked the hotel because it was cheap, and actually quite enjoyed the town. I spent the afternoon shopping and relaxing in the hotel. There isn't much to see in the town, so I wasn't missing much. By 7pm I realized I hadn't eaten anything all day so I headed out to find a restaurant. I only walked 7 or 8 blocks and found a great little place. It was already busy, so I figured it would be a great place.  Sidebar-- restaurants apparently don't usually open until 7pm for dinner.  Italians eat super late.  I walked in and asked for a table for one, but all the ... read more

Pisa This is my second time writing about Pisa, as my first entry deleted, and now I'm a little frustrated so this will probably be the condensed version.  I ended the last entry with the first night in Cinque Terre, and didn't get a chance to talk at all about our morning.  I only stayed for a short while, but the views were amazing, exactly like I had imagined, and the single reason I spent an entire day trying to get there.  I wish I had been able to go to the northern cities and stay for the day, but I'm just grateful that I wasn't there a day before and didn't get caught in the disaster. After breakfast and taking a short look around town, I parted ways with my new friends and headed to ... read more

Solo travels continued... I should preface this entry with a word of caution; if you were worried about me being safe during this trip, maybe just skip this day.  :) On the way to Cinque Terre, I hadto switch trains a few times. On my second to last switch, I noticed there weren't many people on it.  I didn't think much of it, until everyone but me got off way before my stop arrived. a little worried, I proceeded with caution.  My last switch was in Le Spezia, which I learned some people call "the hole" of Italy. I didn't realize there were two stops in La Spezia, so I got off at the wrong one. I am going to take it as a blessing that I did.  When I got off, I found a total ... read more

First day solo I dropped Lindsay off at the train station in Florence and headed to meet Sam Sing.  Parking is funny in Florence.  Nothing is regulated, yet they have all these rules you're supposed to follow.  I don't know if I followed them correctly, but I tried my best and didn't get a ticket or in an accident!   It was really nice to see Sam.  We got pizza and gelato and had girl talk for a couple hours.  I wanted to head out of Florence before nightfall so we did a little shopping and just as quickly as we met, we said our goodbyes. I'm looking forward to seeing that girl again in a few weeks when she heads home! After I found my way out of Florence, I went exploring, without a destination. ... read more

Monday.. Perugia to Florence Today started with the part I most looked forward to; the olive harvest.  We woke up at 6:30 am and hurriedly put ourselves together and headed to the living room to meet Paul.  He made us coffee and we had an Italian pastry for "first breakfast".  They traditionally have two breakfasts here... One early in the morning, and one at 9am.  This was the only day I will experience first breakfast, I'm sure.  :)  We were soon on our way to the area they were starting the harvest in Mongiovino (the land that comprises their property).  When we found the right trees (Paul got a little turned around while showing us around) the men were just starting their work laying out nets under the olive trees.  We weren't required to work, as ... read more

Perugia, day one and two Oh boy, I don't even know where to start.   Perugia began with our host, Paul, greeting us at the train station.  We drove to his house, which was an adventure in itself.  First off, he drives a Range Rover in Umbria (the state we are in).  I knew something was a little different, because it's twice the size of any vehicle here.  Paul lives at "Il Castello di Mongiovino," which lies at the top of the hillside covered in olive trees, overlooking the entire town below. His driveway is at least a mile long, most of it directly uphill, and all of it pothole-riddled gravel.  Awesome!  His home is one of a few buildings that make up the estate. They are all an amazing sight to see. Hundreds of years ... read more

Roma to Perugia Our second day in Rome was a bit different than expected.  We woke up to a thunderstorm, so we decided to wait it out and head into the city after it stopped.  Fortunately the sun was shining by noon, so we got on the bus and headed to the subway station. Once we got there, we noticed there were a lot of people standing around.  We soon realized that the subway was closed.  I had read that Italians sometimes go on strike and all transportation shuts down, so I assumed that's what was happening. We found out later that the rain had flooded the subway so it wouldn't be open for the rest of the day.  I found a bus map and attempted to figure out which busses to take to get to ... read more

Buongiorno! Day one of Rome was fantastic. We arrived in Rome at 9:30 am, had a private transfer company drive us to our hotel, and got situated there. We are staying outside the city (hotel Citta 2000) so our first task was to figure out how to get into the city. Unfortunately, neither of us speak much Italian, and there aren't as many people whom understand English as I thought there would be. It took us a while, but we managed to figure out that you have to pre-purchase tickets to get on the bus. This is important if you don't want to get stuck with a huge fine if you get caught without a ticket (they don't check when you get on). Anyway, we took a 15 minute bus ride to the subway station, and ... read more

Leaving willmar was.... Weird. I didn't really feel like I was going anywhere. I started my day with a meeting. I went home and finished some laundry, attempted to clean the kitchen, and watched some tv. I headed to Max's in the late afternoon, excited to see him. I felt like I was just going to visit a friend, not travel across the world. We had a low key night, watched tv and ate a frozen pizza. Perfect. The boys were generous enough to let me crash at their house last night Thanks max, Jesse, and Tim for my go-to friends. Love you lots. Tim had the day off so we laid low this morning, went to lunch at a great organic hipster place, and watched crappy daytime television. I couldn't have asked for more. Tim ... read more

Haha... That's a funny joke. I may be having a bit of a difficult time putting the final pieces together for this trip. Today I managed to book a couple train tickets, a hostel, and a shuttle to pick us up from the airport. I'm going to elaborate/clarify on that last part. There were tons of options as far s transportation from Fiumicino Airport in Rome to our hotel. It's a bit like Cancun. If you don't have transportation lined up to take you to your hotel (40 minutes away) you will get charged an arm and a leg when you get there.. So I explored our options. Take the train into the city and get a cab from there to our hotel. Shuttle. Taxi. Or private luxury vehicle. Guess which one I booked today? I'll ... read more
