I've finally arrived. I got maybe 4 hours of sleep on the flight. When I sat down, I had the middle row of 4 to myself. But then soon after take-off, some lady put her 8ish year old son to sleep in the 2 seats on the other end, so I had to manage to get comfy (ei. cramped) in 2 seats to try to sleep. I was exhausted at that point from walking around NYC all day and I don't have anywhere to sleep here in Dublin, so I really had to manage to get some sleep on the plane. In a couple of hours, I'm going to hop on a train to Tralee (West coast), stay the night there, and then head to Dingle (Peninsula) tomorrow morning. I'm spending about 3 days in Dingle ... read more

While we were in Cork, Ireland, we took a daytrip to a wildlife park that we had read about randomly in an atlas. My friend Kate and I thought it looked like a really cool place, the other girls weren't interested but they dropped us off on their way to a different tourist destination. The park was amazing! The moment we entered we could see giraffes and they had a huge field and even though there were fences, it was nothing like the zoo. Everything was much more open! FOTA has a lot of endangered species and a lot of them are able to roam free around the park and get along well with other animals. The giraffes also had ostriches, oryx, and zebra in the same field. They had a lot of cheetahs too! That's ... read more

That is the name of the school I am working with - it is pronounced "skull woyruh" (means Mary's School)and it is a catholic primary school in a disadvantaged area. It's only about a ten-minute walk from here and its a pretty ncie walk. I'm very lucky because all of the other girls have to take the bus or a train or in some cases both to get to their school placements. Ireland does not separate church and state, so most of the schools in Ireland are either Catholic or Protestant, with a few smatterings of Jewish, Islam, nondemonational, etc. The state is very careful about equalizing funding (I don't know if anyone remembers, but we tried that whole 'separete but equal' thing and it didn't work out too well for us.) They are supposed to ... read more

It was a pretty bold, last minute decision - but we decided to get amongst our geographical surroundings, and missioned over to Ireland for tiki touring good times and to celebrate St Paddy's Day in Dublin. We had such a blast, the vibe was supreme and it's been confirmed - the Irish are drunken and crazy! We arrived in Dublin on St Paddy's day itself and picked up our backpaker van (similar thing to Wicked rentals in NZ) then missioned into the city to check things out. We parked up on a back street and headed into town to watch the parade. It was simply amazing! We had a great time and Sam got amongst some home video action and took 200 hundred photos of the parade (no exageration - the fully charged camera battery died ... read more

I finally feel like I'm falling into a kind of routine here in Galway. We go into Eyre Square almost everyday, sometimes to actually get things done, other times just to walk around. It's so peaceful here, even when the city center is crowded with people. Today Anna took the Corrib Village coach into the city center. We ended up just walking around for while, making a stop at Java's, our favorite coffeehouse. If there was anything I learned about Anna right away it was that she will talk to absolutely anyone about anything. She loves it. She is the most curious person I have ever met. I like that. It's very funny sometimes! Soon after that we went to the university to watch a movie for our history class, The Wind That Shakes the Barley. ... read more

I had a few friends from America visit me for their spring breaks. Jill, my friend from home, was in Dublin with me for St.Patrick's Day. The celebration was more than I could have ever expected. Until a decade ago the holiday was a low key celebration and national holiday in Dublin. It was only after Americans started coming to Ireland for St.Patrick's Day that Dublin really capitalized on the holiday. The city was filled with American tourists everywhere. The St.Patrick's Day festival was stretched out over four days. They closed down the center of town to traffic and put up a carnival. On the 17th there was an interesting parade. It was nothing like the St.Patrick's Day parades in American cities. There was absolutely no traditional irish dancing, music or bagpipes. Instead, the parade had ... read more

So here begins my first days as a Galwegian! At least for the next five weeks. A slow morning: cup of tea, talked with the roommates, and met the group to go to the university for some orientation business. Afterwards, Jennifer, Lauren, Erin, Anna and I did some clothes shopping, grocery shopping, went to lunch and really just enjoyed the city. I relaxed with the roommates for a while and got to know some more people on the trip. I absolutley love getting to know all of these new people. Everyone is so different, have different backgrounds. I'm really looking forward to the connections I can make in the next 5 weeks or so. What an opportunity! First day of classes: very exciting for me! Started out with Modern Irish History with Doctor Angus Mitchell, raised ... read more

First blog - Ireland Well, this is the third time I've tried to start this blog and each time I've been interrupted. Anyway, I'lll try to finish it this time. I'm here! in Ireland! It's beautiful! (of course) But it does rain. A LOT. Even when you look outside and its sunny, there's probably a 50/50 chance that its raining. And when its sunny and you are walking along, the weather will defy the laws of weather and it'll rain even though the nearest clouds are close to the horizon. It is also pretty cold and windy, though I'm used to that because Boone is cold and windy. They have a weather joke here - Nine months out of the year it's cold, wet and windy, and don't get me started on winter. The town I'm ... read more

We’ve made it to beautiful Cambridge - gorgeous blue skies, spring not quite here yet (it snowed last Sunday and the remains of the snowman are in the backyard) but buds are bursting so there is hope for warmer weather!! Today we’ve “done” the Cambridge colleges with the best guide in the city - Fi’s sister Barbara, who seems to be able to open doors that others can’t. Those who have done the tour with Barb before will understand what that means! The trip from Portstewart to Belfast was great - countryside reminiscent of the Connemara from the previous week with streams, tussock country, stone huts and the ever present blacked legged and nosed long haired sheep. There was ice from hail on the roadsides - very chilly!! Stopped off at the Carrick Fergus castle - ... read more
