When I first decided to go to Copenhagen, it was really a last minute decision. Three days before I left for the Danish capital I booked my train and hostel, not knowing what I would do or where I would go. I had only heard from others that it's great. The previous weekend I was in Amsterdam, a complete disaster. A beautiful city, don't get me wrong. But a complete disaster of a trip. Let's just say some people don't travel well together and leave it with that. My only student on Friday cancelled, and there was a bank holiday on the following Monday, so I had 4 days to either bum around Kiel not feeling so great or take advantage of the time. Money was tight, but I needed to be revived. Enter: Denmark. Best ... read more
My workplace isn't perfect. Whose is?! But, I have decent colleagues and students in a nice town with a good amount of vacation days, health insurance, the whole shebang! One extra perk of my line of work, in my current franchise, are the training workshops! Most people complain, or even dread, training for work but I've been on to courses since my arrival and I loved them! This particular entry takes place in Berlin for my second training weekend. You mean to say, you're sending me to Berlin for the weekend? And you're going to pay for my train and hotel? Uh, yes, please!! The first training session was held in Fulda, a very small city about 5 and a half hours from Kiel. A nice city, to be sure. Very pretty, old neighborhoods and buildings. ... read more
There's a strange identity crisis in Germany. Many students and acquaintences of mine, mostly from Northern Germany, seem to think Bavaria, and all things Bavarian, is not German. It is its own entity with its own language and culture that they don't seem to be very keen on. I thought this was quite juvenile, to be perfecly honest. There are differences in every country, depending on region. I disliked seeing my usually kind students and acquaintences scoff at part of their country like that. Bavaria has a rich history and culture, unique just like the rest of Germany. I live in Kiel which, though a good city to live in, is not exactly the center of culture and excitement. And the German language in general is not a world favorite to begin with, let alone the ... read more
When I was first offered the teaching position in Kiel I naturally did a bit of research before accepting or declining it. The first thing I read about the city after Googling it was about Kieler Woche, or Kiel Week. Each year, the city plays host to a week long sailing festival at the end of June. Sailing fanatics from all over the world descend upon this small city for races, concerts and the international market at the Rathausplatz. To be honest, the boat races are a bit out of the city. The center of the city is where the concerts, food and drunk people from all over the world congregate. For food, music, dancing and cheap drinks from every corner. Needless to say this is the most exciting week of the year in Kiel. It ... read more
If someone had told me a year ago that I would be living in Germany in a few short months I would have looked at this person and said "Really? Awesome." I had been looking for work abroad for some months and it was about time something came up! Anywho, my move to Northern Germany was swift. I was interviewed, offered a position and relocated in about a month and a half. It was my first "real job," I had very little experience and I had not spoken a work of German in my life. I had never even heard of Kiel until I got an e-mail asking for an interview. I hadn't even remembered I had applied for a position there! But here I am, doing what I've always wanted. I have wonderful students, I've ... read more
While I was in Ireland on a work visa last summer (2008) I took a weekend trip to Glasgow. I had always wanted to go to Scotland and it was truly a great weekend. Besides getting to explore the city I took a day trip into the Highlands and saw the absolutely gorgeous mountains, valleys, lakes, etc. The tour left from Glasgow, and made stops all the way up to Inverness and back down again. I would love to see Glasgow and hope the photos from the trip inspire you to see it for yourselves!... read more
A continuation of a beautiful weekend spent in Venice during my summer study abroad session in Ireland. Europe has infected me. I cannot stop wanting more and more of this place. :-)... read more
We left for Venice on Friday! Heather, Jenna, Zephyr, Mary, Jessica, Kevin and I made our way to this beautiful city without a hitch. The sun was setting and the colors left me speechless, and we hadn't even made it to Venice yet. It was just beauftiful there. The architecture was simply magnificent. The heat, though, was a complete change from the rain and damp of Galway. Saturday we started early with a walk to San Marco square, saw the Doge's Palace and the Basilica. The morning was absolutely beautiful. Heather and Jenna wanted to go shopping so the rest of us took our own personal tour of Venice. We walked and walked to nowhere in particular. We took a nice ciesta from the July weather and met again in the early evening to have a ... read more
What an enjoyable weekend. I planned on getting some homework done (but isn't that always the case?), but it was such a beautiful day who could stay in doing homework? Anna and I went the dock behind the apartment to watch the day go by. We took some books out with us and relaxed by the water for a few hours, reading, talking and daydreaming. Later that afternoon, I went over to Erin's apartment to watch the big Galway vs. Clare hurling match. Ten minutes into the game we were screaming at the television, cheering for Galway. They lost, unfortunately, but it was the first hurling game I had ever watched. Surprising how quickly we got sucked into the madness of that sport! Afterwards Lauren came down with her violin and played some tunes for us. ... read more
Today was amazing, to say the least. We left for Connemara this morning. It was the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen. Again, if you are on the west coast of Ireland, take a trip through Connemara. We went through the peaklands of the area, right through the mountains. It was so green and the tops of the mountains were covered with thick mist. The river valleys we drove through seemed endless and to be honest, I didn't want them to end. The most exciting part of the day was seeing Kylemore Abbey come into view. I had looked at pictures of this place for years and it was a complete surprise when we came across it. It was even more gorgeous than the pictures, as is everything in this country. It had hit me, ... read more
