Hey All, Well in the last 2 days we have really seen alot of the Ireland! We caught a rail tour from the Connolly station in Dublin at 7am on Saturday morning and we were off to see Giants Causeway which is up in Northern Ireland. The train ride to Belfast was about 2 hours long, and then we spent about 6 hours on a coach heading even farther north... we stopped off at a rope bridge along the irish coast (and the name escapes me right now), but it was about a 1km hike up to the bridge from the bus and after crossing the bridge you can wander around and see the little fishing shack where the fisherman used to stay while they fished for Salmon (I believe it was salmon!) and on a ... read more

After a long but uneventful flight, Jay and I landed in Dublin Thursday morning on schedule. Neither of us slept much, so we were exhausted. We took a bus from the airport to the city and wandered around for a couple hours looking for a hostel Jay stayed in several years ago. After asking directions and walking a few miles (don't ask how many kilometres that is because I don't know), we found it. The hostel, called the Avalon, is in a gorgeous old brownstone building on Auinger Street, about half a mile south of the River Liffey. The area is decent, but it's really close to St. Stephen's Green, a large gated park with statues, trees, flowers and ponds with aggressive and angry geese. Doesn't sound too different from Boston Common come to think of ... read more

And I am....not quite....not quite......and.... done! This morning I had a three hour exam for my Unionism Under the Union course on a Saturday (Yeah!). There is nothing like Unionism to wake one up in the morning. I wrote on Female Unionists for my first essay question, opposition from conservative Protestants to the Act of Union in the 1790s for my second, and Ulster Unionists in the Great War for my third question. And everyone who just read that is now asleep. Anyway, I wanted to post some pictures from trip to Dublin and County Wicklow including the monastic site of Glendalough. Furthermore, I have some pictures from my trip to Castle Rock (the village where C.S. Lewis spent his holidays) beach and the cookout in the student village. So, I have two weeks before I ... read more

Hi All, We have had a nice couple of days! We were in London on Tuesday for the day, and checked out the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge (we actually saw it open! Very cool!) and went through the London Dungeons - the pictures are awesome!! So on wednesday we were full of history, and saw the crown jewels - it was a great day, and the weather held out for us until then. We had been pretty lucky - the sun was shining every day since we arrived! Wednesday night we got to go to the dinner theatre with Jane, Lynn and Helen - the play was very entertaining, and the meal was excellent! It was a great night. Wednesday was spent relaxing and doing a little shopping in Reading - we finally ... read more

I just arrived in Dublin about two days ago. I'm still getting used to everything--it's quite a change. Mostly I've been jet lagged/drunk/hung over. So ya know. Last night we all went on a musical pub crawl in downtown Dublin. I loved the Irish music & the musician who resembled a manlier version of Orlando Bloom. No joke. He had dark hair, beard that wasn't too scruffy, and was a great music-maker which is dead sexy. Earlier today I went to my interview for my Internship. I took the bus to the south end of town where the University College Dublin is located. All together it took me about 3 hours to get down there, because of traffic as well me getting lost. I found the place after asking many a folks where to go along ... read more

Drove North about an hour from Cork to see Cahir Castle which is from the year 1142. We then drove to the Rock of Cashel which is a fortress from the 4th century. We attempted to see a Castle Ormond from the 14th century. Although we did “see it”, I did not notice in the tour book that it was not open until June. We then drove into Waterford and checked into our hotel. We drove to two beach towns, Dunmore East and Tramore and had dinner at our hotel’s pub. ... read more

English Weve arrived in Ireland (and im not quite sure how the keyboards here work so excuse my punctuation), the towns are very pretty. Were traveling along the coast down to Cork where we;ll work in an organic farm for 2 months. Weve only been here three days, in Dublin we stayed in a youth hostel, the first cheap one weve found so far (8 dollars per person). Unfortunately weve found no other hostals in the same price range, last night the cheapest accomodation we could find was for 60$ in a bed and breakfast(there doesnt seem to be a lot of camping along our route). So far the price of living seems to be higher than in Spain and Portugal, well just have to get used to it. We had a great breakfast this morning ... read more

So, yes... a lot has happened since we last updated (as you might be able to tell from our title). Berlin first... It was good, we got an awesome (and free) walking tour of Berlin. Yay New Europe Tours! We had a hard time getting to our hostel, but eventually found it with the help of some locals. The train (public transit) system in Berlin originally seemed insane, but after a good nights rest we managed to get around fairly easy. Steven thinks it is actually one of the better designs in Europe. We visited a cool museum that had taken apart temples and city gates, like one of the city gates of Babylon, in foreign lands and reassembled them in the museum. Seeing the wall and the death strip in between was interesting. We found ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Kinsale May 13th 2008

Last night, our waitress suggested visiting these two towns which are just outside Cork. Kinsale is a fishing port. While Cobh is a fishing port too, it is more famous for being the final point of departure for the fateful voyages of the Titanic and Lusitania. We drove back into City Cork and spend the afternoon shopping for short sleeve shirts for me (all I packed was sweaters and it has been in the 70s). We found a Captain America’s Pub (John’s favorite comic book character) and shared a pizza for dinner. ... read more
