Here are a few pictures of another church designed by Pugin, Ss. Peter and Paul in Cork. The Blessed Sacrament was exposed for adoration, so I was somewhat limited in what pictures I could take. I had intended to hear the traditional Latin Mass here at 10 a.m., but my €2 alarm clock failed to wake me in time. Oh well, at least I got a good, solid nine or ten hours of sleep. I inadvertently deleted the pictures I took there this morning (I'm not used to moving files on Windows Vista), so I went back this afternoon for a few shots. I also picked up some political literature in the back of the church about the "abolition of the Irish Nation for the EU Dictatorship." The other pamphlet was titled "A Godless Empire." I ... read more

If you get Dublin on your hands don't rub your eyes. it stings like a bitch. thats just alittle something i discovered this morning. Anyway, the first day was unbelievable. Dad got me to the airport in record time and i cruised through security. all in all i was 3 and a half hours early. when i finally did board the plane, i took one look at my seat and i knew why i got it for $200. baby Ava would have been squeshed. i know this because the baby sitting next to me must have been with that crying the whole damb flight non-sense. and what really sucked was that some useless bastard on the plane had a nut allergy so guess what... no peanuts for anyone. dillhole! Now with the perils of the flight ... read more

Hi Bloggers, Kate helped me with kick starting this blog so although I've arranged an alternate I thought it would be good to use this blog to see how it works for us and you. So, although you've heard this before I'll prattle on for a bit to make use of the log-in. We went to a pre-wedding party at a local restaurant last night and it was lovely meeting the lovely bride-to-be and her friends as well as Brad's Aussie and local friends. Brad is Paul and Cheryl's son. Their other son and wife and newish baby arrived yesterday - a big ordeal for a visit of about 5 days but one you'd have to do for your brother. Apparently Irish weddings are a big deal and carry on to the wee hours of the ... read more

We made it to Cork in one piece! As it turns out, I had to drive from Dublin to Cork (3+ hours), which wasn't exactly what I had bargained for, but all is well! The actual competition is tomorrow night; our twelve minutes on stage will be what we've been preparing for all semester. Our performances yesterday and today went very well. Here are a few pictures. Also, check out Ashley and Chris's blogs at http://socontinental.blogspot.com/ and http://www.chrisjosof.com/Light/Blog/Entries/2008/4/30_Much_needed_rest.html Patrick... read more

Jessica finally finished her paper...she is done with school until the fall! We picked her up at Corrib Village and drove her to the school to turn in the paper. We then went down to the City Center to do some shopping on Shop Street, which is right next to Merchant Street (these Irish come up with some clever names for their streets). I picked up an Aran sweater, and Pam managed to find gifts for all the nieces and nephew. I got a few shots of Shop Street and Eyre Square. Later in the day, we dropped Jessie and one of her roommates off at the rugby game (Connacht vs. Cardiff Blues). Cardiff kicked Connacht's butt (39-6). Connacht was the home team...it was not a happy time! Apparently, Connacht is so bad that they are ... read more

I know it has been a couple of days since I last wrote, but we have stayed in hotels that didn't have internet. Go figure! anyway, we left Belfast and made our way along the A2 -coastal highway to the giant's causeway. This is rock formations that they believe were caused by volcanic eruptions. It was gorgeous, windy, and we walked as far up the trail as we could until the trail ended due to a recent rock slide. I hope you enjoy the pictures. We then drove down to Dungannon which is where the ancestry records were supposed to be kept. Turns out it is only a little hole in the wall office that is not manned all the time, as the guy goes to Belfast to get records.......so go figured that we were right ... read more

Today was supposed to be a visit to the Aran Islands, three islands off the coast of Ireland, just out of Galway Bay, where the people still live much as they did over a hundred years ago. This is also where the Aran sweater originated, the traditional Irish wool sweater with different designs woven into the sweater. Each design has a meaning, and each family had a specific pattern which identified their family. The sweaters were worn by the fishermen and helped identify their bodies if they were lost at sea and washed up onto the beach. We missed the first ferry and the next ferry only allowed us 3 hours on the island before we had to catch the last ferry back to the mainland, so we decided to drive north and visit The Connemara ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Cliffs of Moher April 30th 2008

Today was our day to visit the Cliffs of Moher. Jessie has already been to visit the Cliffs, so she stayed in Galway to finish her paper due on Friday while we did something she had already done. The day started with a wonderful full Irish breakfast: fried eggs, sausages, ham, potato cake (must have potatoes), Irish brown bread, toast, juice and coffee. We made it through Galway without any problems and headed south around Galway Bay. We stopped at Dunguaire Castle in Kinvarra to take a few pictures and walk around the castle. We originally wanted to take the coast road to the Cliffs, but crazy Irish drivers caused a change in plans. Side note: The roads outside the city get very narrow. There are stone walls everywhere. Apparently, in clearing their fields the people ... read more
