After a good night’s sleep in Westport, and a hearty Irish breakfast, minus the black and white pudding (been there, tried that) we managed to lose KB and Ryan on the first turn out of our B and B! In hindsight, we should have told them which way we would be turning, but as Kristelle waited at the top of the hill, we made our way to the bottom, realised our mistake, and backtracked, only to find they had already left. We did another quick sweep back into town, but gave up, and decided to head to Galway and meet there…at least that was the plan! We arrived in Galway at midday and commenced the search for the tourist information center - hopefully to meet up with KB and Ryan and to book the nights accommodation ... read more

Dear Ones, We have spent a very long but fascinating day driving the twists and turns and amazing side roads of what is known as the Ring of Kerry. It's about a 110 miles of a "mini" Ireland - with mountains, vales, rolling hillside, and many coastlines. Once again my driver was amazing negotiating the roads made for one car, not two. We bounced and zigged and zagged, but we saw such beautiful scenery and sites. Old forts, extraordinary cliffs, beautiful landscapes. Yes, we had rain and too many gray skies, but we also had sunshine and some blue sky to see. We're back at our bed and breakfast (so - so), for one more night. Shortly, we'll head downtown Kilarney to check out the pubs and the entertainment, even on a Sunday night. Tomorrow our ... read more

Dear Family and Friends, I have so much to write, but I need to keep it at a minimum for now (you are probably breathing a sigh of relief) as we have moved into a bed and breakfast in Killarney and were told that it had internet access - only to find out that they don't but they did kindly offer me their personal computer. So, I'm sitting in a tiny closet (pantry-like) in their kitchen trying to type quickly. We left Wales in the rain (what's new) but had a good trip from our timeshare to the dock at Pembroke. Traveling through the middle and south of Wales we saw less steep slopes and more rolling hills and then got to the water/port. Very pretty along the coast. We turned in the car and then ... read more

So, incarceration successfully avoided. If that is your criteria for a successful evening, then you are living life wrong. But I did avoid assaulting someone on foreign soil, which is always a good thing. So, at the crack of dawn we get up and hit the road, I’ve been told today is Sunday, but I have no idea and am just going to take it on good faith that this is true. In any case, we are now off to Kilarney, Ireland and will be arriving on 1) Canada Day (For some reason they think they deserve a day for something they did. Honestly, we let them have their own flag and “parliament” shouldn’t that be enough?), which means that a few members of our group are in very high spirits, and 2) on the day ... read more

Hello from rainy Ireland! Our first stop of this exciting journey did actually have a bit of excitement. We were suppose to fly into Dublin, but our airplane was grounded in Shannon after some weather delays caused our flight crew to work overtime. They told us on the plane that we would be given an Aerlingus flight to Dublin, but once we got off the plane, we realized they actually meant a coach (translation: bus). It would have taken about 4 hours to get to Dublin & we were only planning on staying there for another 2 days before heading back Southeast (3 hour bus ride South of Shannon), so we decided to skip Dublin all together & just head to our second stop, Killarney. Once we got into the town, we headed straight for the ... read more

This was a great day! Probably our favourite. Unfortunately it was probably also the day that set off Christine's Asthma and Herve and Lauren's hay fever because the flowers were all blooming in the National Park and Muckross Gardens. (But we didn't know this until later although we should have guessed from Lauren's hay fever. She is the healthiest one amongst us since she has been put on the gluten and egg free diet, in future, if she gets snuffly from pollen exposure, I will ring the warning bells for Christine's asthma medication to start it's magic. Knowing this before would have saved us an emergency ward adventure..even Intensive care) when we returned and Christine experienced her first asthma attack in 5 years.) Killarney is a great town with all the mod cons and good pub. ... read more

The Ring of Kerry means sheep, sheep and more sheep on the roads, on the gorgeous big hills and around the water. They are the healthiest looking animals you'll ever see. (Same for the cows actually) This is really Ireland at its best: beautiful scenery, white beaches, friendly people, roaming animals and green, green , green. There were many coaches on this route, mainly full of Americans with Irish roots. Slept this night in Killarney: a huge YHA with beautiful big reading and relaxing rooms, videos and books. It was late and raining so we just spent a bit of time walking around the grounds and looking at the many rabbits scurrying away.... read more

Rain toady: good day for taking off for our next stop: The Gap of Dunloe. From Lisdoonvarna (The Burren), we avoided Limerick city y going South to catch a car ferry from Cty Clare to Cty Kerry. A quick journey. Soon we got to Tralee and as it was still raining we visited the Kerry the kingdom Museum. This was well worth the stop. The emphasis was on Irish (Kerry) history (even prehistoric) with excellent displays that bring the history to life. Downstairs is a walk through medieval (1450) village street. Christine and Lauren had to be dragged out of the Spy exhibition (celebrating the life of a spy but I can't remember his name) where they lifted fingerprints and analysed their criminal tendencies. (it's not looking good for Christine, Herve or me but Lauren is ... read more

So due to the extra expense it was to travel to the cliffs of Moher we based ourselves in Killarny in hopes of traveling to one of the neighboring peninsula on the west coast of Ireland. We decided on the dingle peninsula which had been highly recommended by a travel guide at the towns information center. The tour was mostly a tease at how beautiful the coast of ireland can be when rain and dense fog arenºt covering the ground. Other then the tour we really didnºt do much else Killarny other then catch up on sleep to rid me of my cold. Unfortunately Laura caught some weird skin bites or rash from the hostel. Ahh shows what you get for living in hostels for 70 days. Next up: Lagos Portugal ... read more

So, after our wonderful blarney castle experience, Lisa and i planned on visiting the cliffs of moher, however due to the high cost of getting there, we decided to head to killarney and take a day trip to the dingle peninsula instead. Lisa got a little sick, so we took it easy. the trip to the peninsula was nice, but would have been awesome had the weather cooperated. I might as well have been in a hockey rink in a bathing suit....it was rainy and so cold, and the fog was so dense, it made it difficult to make out the beautiful coast line. However, we did manage to get a few decent pictures....which youºll eventually be able to see when i get to a computer where i can post them. some gripes....i woke up ... read more
