The Gap of Dunloe Killarney National Park, Ireland The Gap of Dunloe is our destination today and rather than take a tour, we opted to bike to the Reen Pier and have the boat transport us and the bikes across the three lakes of Killarney: the Lough Leane, the Muckross Lake, and the Upper Lake... to Lord Brandon's Cottage. As we stood on the pier waiting (Ireland time is different from real time!) we saw some Americans..."Hey where are you from?" we asked. The response was "PITTSBURGH"! "No way!" we said, "We live in Shaler", they lived in McCandles the next township. Nice folks on their honeymoon. Small world! Well after an hour and half in the boat, we arrived at Lord Brandon's Cottage and began biking toward the Gap of Dunloe. We are at ... read more

DAY 3 Galway to Dingle No Breakfast… boo, we’d be sorry later! Drive to Shannon Ferry, price scare- WE took a ferry from galway to dingle, andat first thought it was going to cost 120 euros- not so good since we had been in the car for over an hour at this point and to turn around would not be fun. Then, we realized that included return trips and it wasfor the entire week. Our cosr would only be 17 euros. Surf Lessons canceled- the beach had little//no waves, it was cold and it was raining. We’re thinkingit would be better t o learn tosurf in warmerwater. Rainy and windy Good lunch at Bistro- first slice ofirish pizza- not bad! Gas Prices- just as bad to purchase in the us! Especially since it’s sold in liters ... read more

Last night after I finished blogging, I was reading the Rick Steves Guide and found an archeology tour of the Dingle Peninsula that sounded wonderful. I brought the guide book down first thing this morning and Geraldine called and booked the tour for us. We had a quick breakfast and were on the road to Dingle by 9:00. There are 5 peninsulas on the west coast of Ireland; the two most famous are the Dingle Peninsula and the one whose coastal road is known as the Ring of Kerry. The Ring of Kerry is the most famous of the five but, we had read and been told by some locals, if you only have time to do one, do Dingle. So off to Dingle we went. The weather was dreary (oh, Mark looked out the window ... read more

Day 4 Great breakfast- a switchup from the traditional irish breakfast- scrambled eggs and no puddings- by reuquest! No bicycles to hire on Sundays, even though we passed by the places 3 times. There was a local lady renting them, but with the rain and the poor conditions of the bikes themselves we decided to pass and do the drive instead. Walked for about 2 hours, St marys Church, trinity tree Tourist board After 2 hour of searching for bike we decided to drive it. We got lost on purpose to find the art gallery of Louis ________, where we received 2 vases from as wedding gifts from ryan’s aunt cindy. Sheeps Ass- a sheep was scratching his behind on a barbed wire fence- ouch! Wish I had my camera out for this one because of ... read more

We were promised wi-fi internet in this hotel but my computer does not even note that there is a wireless connection available. At the last hotel, we had not been promised wi-fi but turns out they had it and we could get a weak signal. Here, nothing. But they do have a computer in the lounge for guests to use so I checked the weather forecast last night. Gloomy. As usual, we woke up this morning and Mark looked out the window. “It’s overcast and raining.” At least our hearts will never give out from the shock. We slept in a bit today as we had decided to stick pretty close to the local area and explore the National Park. We went down to breakfast at about 9:15. We were greeted warmly by the waitress and ... read more

Negotiated a bus from Heathrow to Gatwick for my flight to Dublin. I wasn't scheduled to leave until 9pm-ish and I arrived at Gatwick at around 3pm. I inquired at the service desk whether it might be possible to be put on standby and catch an earlier flight. The reply was "Sorry, Ryanair don't do Stand-by, however, if you wanted to book a separate ticket for an earlier flight it will cost you ............................121 Pounds" "Ahh thanks, but no thanks" was my reply. Ryanair also have a policy of charging 5.5quid for every kilo that your luggage is over 15kg. Now I knew that my backpack was at least over 20kg so I put my brain to work to alleviate the problem. Solution = Chuck the heavy non-essential stuff like washing powder etc and wear as ... read more

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 Dingle Town & Peninsula, Ireland After dining on Tuesday evening at the Adare Manor Country Club, I awoke ready to play some golf. We hurried through breakfast, checked out of our nice B&B and headed for the course. Upon arrival we discovered that there was a junior competition about to start and the course would be closed until 10:00am. A late start would delay our drive south so that was out of the question. A second problem was also developing. Rain! We decided that it might be better to move on and play golf somewhere else or not at all if the rain continued. So, we drove towards the Dingle Peninsula. We had not yet decided on where we would sleep but we wanted to see the town. We would decide later ... read more

Yes please! Ok, so we headed over to Kilkenny after Dublin and rode on our first train, which was amazing. I am now in love with train rides; they are comfy and you have a table to play cards on! So Kilkenny is a really Irish town that it is very small with a bad ass castle. We did a tour of this castle (after taking a tour of the castle grounds, which we both took the opportunity to pee on our first castle!) and during this tour we came upon a huge marble table. Whilst Dillon was sitting upon this table the guide goes on to tell the group that it was used to lay the dead bodies on during the wake. So he was embarassed and stood up quickly, then proceeded to exclaim, ''Shit!'', ... read more

We woke up early for a run/walk around Dingle before checking out of the B&B. We drove the “Ring of Kerry”, which is a popular loop around the County Kerry. We stopped at the seaside town of Waterville and ate lunch and John tried to teach me how to skip rocks in the Atlantic Ocean. Taking a road less traveled through a forest, we then drove onto City Cork, which is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. We found a great pub across the street from the hotel and had Shepherd’s Pie and Curry Chicken. Every menu seems to have Curry Chicken and Lasagna, which we found really odd for Ireland. ... read more
