August 10 Kinsale Harbor Cruise Today the weather was so perfect I knew this was the day I had been waiting for to catch the harbor cruise. I walked down the hill and arrived at exactly 2PM while they were loading for the cruise. Because the weather was so perfect it was a phenomenal cruise. Everything was like a picture postcard. And there were some nice people sitting next to me and we had a nice chat as we cruised. After the cruise I walked up the hill to the benches on the Mall and enjoyed the best view of Kinsale Harbor and the hills beyond. After a couple of hours of just enjoying the view and the fresh air and perfect weather I eased across town on Rampart Rd and to Main Street where I ... read more

August 9 2012 Kinsale to Garrettstown, Old head of Kinsale, and return Today I had my tea and thought things over and then scurried down the hill to catch the 249 bus to Kinsale. As usual there was no need to scurry to the bus stop because as usual the bus was 20 minutes. In any case I bought a ticket to Garrettstown with a return for about €7 and rode down to Garrettstown. The bus stopped at the Garrettstown Beach but I stayed on because I wanted to get closer to The Old Head of Kinsale. I rode past the Garrettstown beach and the Garrylucuas beach and on to where the R604 curves north and got off at “The Speckled Door” restaurant. It is the closest place from the Old Head of Kinsale that I ... read more

August 8 – Kinsale – Compass Hill I caught a taxi from the hostel to “The Mall” which is a road above the green that connects with the Compass Hill walk. As I was going to walk around Compass Hill I knew that would be enough and so just caught a cab to the alms houses intending to walk up the hill from there. The cab cost €6 and was well worth it as while I like taking a walk, climbing steep streets and steps is another matter. In any case the weather was fair with a bit of clouds and haze but not too bad. I hiked around the hill and it was quite a pleasant hike although only the first half had a view and the rest had the view blocked by property owner ... read more

Tuesday August 7 Kinsale Cloudy and drizzly but the weather looks very nice for the next 3 days. I figure tomorrow I will make another stab at hiking Compass hill and Thursday I will go to the beach at Garrettstown. I can use the #249 bus to get to Garrettstown beach. Maybe next week I will take the bus to Clonakilty, Skibbereen, and Bantry. I could probably get tours to Mizen Head , etc from Skibbereen. I guess I can try it that way since without a debit card I can't rent a car.Actually when you add in the insurance to rent a car the cost per day is about $45 so I could probably get a cab, tours, and buses to take me to some of the places I want to go for around that. They ... read more

August 5 Sunday – Kinsale I walked down to the harbor to watch the events for today. The tide had went out and was still out to such a degree that all there was, was mud where the previous day’s events had been held. I went to the other end of the harbor where today’s events were being held. There were various sailboat races being held. I watched them a bit and then started up the hill to the Compass Hill trail but it started raining. So I just eased back into town and listened to one of the performers in Market square a bit, then I walked up the hill a bit and checked out the St Multose church. It was built in 1190 by the Normans on the site of a previous 6th century ... read more

Sunday 5th August We had our tea and coffee just after the QE berthed in Cobh on a beautiful sunny morning. We had a nice leisurely breakfast and then disembarked for a lovely saunter around Cobh. It is only a small town so it didn’t take too long. It is very, very hilly but commands great views over the bay. We were invited to a memorial service in memory of those who died on the Lucitania and those who survived on 7th May 1915. Nicky’s grandfather was one of the survivors so it meant something very special to us both. A pipe band marched to the memorial with various dignitaries and the QE ship’s officers. Commodore Rynd was the first to be invited to lay a wreath followed by several others. A priest then led prayers ... read more

Thursday 2nd August - continued Back on board we had afternoon tea and then time for Barry to have a little snooze whilst Nicky sorted out the laundry for tomorrow (hang the expense). Dinner this evening was semi formal - suit and tie but as usual we had an excellent dinner. After dinner we decided not to go to the theatre as it was going to be quite a lot of jazz which neither of us particularly like so we went back to our room and watched a really awful black and white film Harvey. And so to bed as we made our way down to Liverpool overnight. Friday 3rd August We were already tied up at the cruise terminal when we got up in time to enjoy our tea and coffee before getting dressed ready ... read more

August 4 Kinsale Saturday Today I walked into town and had another look around at things and did a little shopping. I stopped at a restaurant called “The Shack” which was a nice restaurant and had a delicious “Murder by Mushroom” burger. I didn’t think I could eat the whole thing but I did. I did have to cut it into pieces and eat it with a fork as it was too “sloppy” to try and hold in your hand. It was sooooooo good. After eating I had resolved to not take another long walk until I had found a nice place to sit down and enjoy the view while my meal digested a bit. However I started walking and saw not too big a stairs and thought I would just walk up it and see ... read more

August 3 Friday – Kinlay Today the weather was a bit cold but nice and it warmed up after I walked into Kinlay. I toured the Kinlay museum and then hiked up the hill to Desmond Castle which is really only a tower house. It was used as a customs house first then by the Spanish to store arms. Then it was used by the English first to keep French Prisoners and then American Prisoners from the Revolutionary War. It is now a wine museum. I didn’t visit the museum but just took some pictures from outside, then walked along upper O’Connell Street to the other side of town till it fed back into Pier Road. I went into the Trident Restaurant and had a delicious albeit pricy lunch. Then I walked all the way out ... read more

August 2 Thursday – Kinsale Took it easy today and caught up on my blog up till the time I left Cork. Quite a bit of work but actually for a cold and windy and later on rainy day it keeps one busy. The weather looks good for this weekend in Kinsale for the regatta. I have been updating blogs most of the day and now at 10:30 Pm it is raining on the roof of the patio and I am listening to that as well as George has brought out his guitar and I am having my own private music session. The hostel is almost empty except for one other guest who has gone to bed. The rain as well as the threat of rain is keeping people away. But I believe rain or no ... read more
