You read about how green the "emerald isle" is, and you read about the rain and the friendly, accommodating people, and the pubs, and all that good stuff. But you fully don't know what any of that is until you experience it. We've done so much in the past few days --- all of which deserves its own blog entry --- and I wish I took the time to write about it all, but, well, you know I'm having way too much fun doing the holiday thing. So, here's a run down of it all: Day Two: Book of Kells, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar area. Awesome, awesome and awesome. Both mornings in Dublin were spent sipping lattes on a busy cafe corner. Do you have any idea how cool it is to ... read more

So a quick intro to the family. M, C, Romi - M's sister, John - Romi's partner (originally from Cork), Sarah - M's daughter and then a whole lot John's Irish cousins - Ursula & Proinnsias, Billy, Julie Ann, Alva and Paul. Unfortunately, Louise - M's other daughter was enjoying herself too much in Sydney, Oz so didn't make it. This was a double celebration for J & R's big birthdays last year. And what a great weekend it was. If you've never been to Ireland (and we don't mean Dublin), go now! This is a place that knows how to have fun, where folk are incredibly warm and generous, and you can't help but enjoy yourself. Three nights there. Three different bars. And three different styles of traditional Irish music - all fantastic in spite ... read more

We decided there was only one thing for it. When we went down to Blarney, to the castle, we took the big, golfing umbrella with us on the scooter and it worked. Not a drop of rain today. The umbrella also proved useful for mounting and dismounting but a bit tricky to hold as we were riding along. We had been warned that Blarney Castle gets a lot of visitors and there were indeed quite a number of coach parties there. The Castle is set in beautiful and extensive grounds so no hardship to walk up to the castle. Bob decided (sensibly as it proved but then he generally is) not to join the very long queue to get to the Blarney stone on the roof of the castle as the queue stretched from the ground ... read more

Today’s drive started with a lovely scenic route along the Copper Coast. Some beautiful views as we drove along of cliffs and deep inlets. The sea looked surprisingly calm and there were patches of blue in the sky which looked promising – “enough blue sky to make a sailor a pair of trousers” which my mother always said meant it was going to be fine. Alas, must have been too big a sailor, not enough of the blue as a big black cloud came and gobbled it all up. There were a couple of interesting places en route to Cork, Dungarvan and Youghal but didn’t stop because of the dratted rain. When we got to Cobh (Cove) we had a minor moment of panic when Bob couldn’t find his wallet and we wondered if it had ... read more

We are sitting at Cork airport waiting to fly to Bristol. No rain today, the sun came out earlier. We had a lovely drive to the village of Kinsale yesterday. It is a pretty little place on the sea. Lots of brightly coloured cottages with pretty flower boxes on their windows. Cork is quite a big city, pop 500,000. It was a major port in days gone by. It was the last port of call by the Titanic before it sailed to its disaster. We had an interesting drive to the airport this morning. The Cork marathon was on today and they had closed a lot of the city streets. Our taxi driver was not happy...not that we could understand a lot of what he said. The traffic was a nightmare, it was lucky we had ... read more

Sunday June 3 – Sunday June 3 Cork and Cobh -Drinking my tea and thinking things over. Today I am planning on walking down the street a bit to the train station and taking the train to the seaside town of Cobh. It has quit raining for now and I think I see a little sunshine trying to peer through the clouds. I took the train to Cobh for about 7 Euros return and walked all over the town, I had plopped down in the middle of a bagpipe and marching competition so I watched the bagpipe competition, ate at Supermac’s, and toured the Titanic Museum, and rode the train back to Cork. It was a very good day and I enjoyed it very much. The marchers all wore different and intricate as well as spotlessly ... read more

We have had a couple of lovely days driving from Galway to Dingle. It has been raining quite a lot but that's Ireland! We drove the scenic route along the coast, it was a long drive but certainly worth it for the spectacular views. Some of the roads are very narrow and curvy, there is no clearance on the side of the road. There are stone walls, undergrowth and big trees hanging over the road. We came across a few tractors and a few wandering sheep. The Dingle area is absolutely beautiful, even with the rain. We stayed at a little village called Annascaul, pop just over 200. Our B&B was really good, the young couple who run it were so friendly and helpful. It rained all the way to Cork yesterday, quite heavy at times. ... read more

Saturday June 2 – Cork - I arrived in Cork around 11:30. The bus trip went though some green countryside which was quite beautiful. Really some lovely country here. When I arrived in Cork I gathered up my stuff and did the long hike dragging my suitcase up the hill to the hostel. Next time I’m not going to be El Cheapo but will get a cab. According to the web page this was supposed to be a 5 minute walk…..I guess if you are a horse. (I figured out later I could have taken the #226 bus for E1.70 ,which would have taken me from the bus station to Kent Station which is the train station across the street from the hostel. If I had come in on a plane the #226 bus runs from ... read more
