Hello everyone, Well since I last left a blog we have been to Eger (HUngary), Kosice (Slovakia), staying a night in Miskolc (HUngary) between the two, and Vysoke Tatrz (Slovakia(. To let you know this keyboard is a nightmare, what a suprise, and for some unknown reason will only let me do brackets facing in one direction. Great stuff. So anyway, since I last wrote we have left our original path for one less well known, and with this has come increasing difficulties with language, some interesting situations at restaurants (when the dishes are named in Slovakian/Hungarian and none of the waiters speak english( and a lot of excitement. After Budapest we headed off to Eger, a town famed for its wine. Fantastic we thought, wine and rural Hungary. Unfortunately on arrival we discovered that ... read more

BUDLTNDay 1 - MON 11. June 2007 Using Budapest Transport Company we went to Ferihegy 1. Arrived in time, check-in started exactly 2 hours prior to departure, we were the first ones. The check-in lady managed to anger me somewhat, since she couldn't handle the boarding card machine. Nevertheless, Group A for boarding. Security checks were very quick. Plane arrived 10 minutes late, due to early morning fog at Luton. Since the 30-minute turnaround time is almost impossible to keep, we took off 20 minutes behind schedule. Despite this fact, however, we arrived according to schedule at 12:10 PM. Flight was rather uneventful, the sky was mostly clear fortunately. I even saw Brussels airport from the air. Seat 2A (window). Plane: EasyJet Boeing 737-700, registration: G-EZKE. Looked pretty new. At Luton Airport we managed to catch ... read more

Since leaving Anchorage has been a mixed blessing. Stayed in sterile, hoypoloi horrible hotel on 18th floor in Vancouver which is beautiful from the air but only saw a bit of downtown which is tyoical downtown, anyway only a stepping stone to the Rocky Mountaineer train to Calgary. This was wonderfully well organiyed from go to whoa and is a huge enterprise. The day was damp and grey and we spent two hours travelling slowly through ailway yards and suburbs then.......voila, British Columbia opened up its glories for the rest of the day, aided by Cameron our guide/waiter, very knowledgeable. We spent the night in Kamloops in a my-style motel, small, friendly and by the river, very comfy. We were driven to the Lumberjack Show, a super meal and corny but interesting and funny show demonstrating ... read more

Hello again! Well, after perhaps the longest train ride on earth, we arrived at the bright lights of Budapest at 5am Thursday morning (though at this time they weren,t very bright at all). Exhausted after another interruption filled nights sleep, but excited to be somewhere new, we got a taxi to the door of our hostel ready to crash out on our pre-booked beds. UNFORTUNATELY when we got there, we buzzed the buzzer and an old bloke came and told us the hostel had been shut for 6 months ... ahhh! Two hours and a lot of trekking later we found a different hostel: The red bus hostel, only to be told that the bloke had lied to us and our original hostel was in fact fully open and running. NOT AMUSED. After that shaky ... read more

Well the night train into Budapest was much better than expected, mainly because it was just me and Laurel in there so we had alot more room. Also she didn't snore so a bonus. :) So after I saw her to her hostel, I found mine and went out and explored Castle Hill a bit before meeting up with Ben. We met up (appropriately) at Heroes Square and pretty much headed straight for the pub and had a couple of beers and some dinner. After several more beers, we went out to check out the nightlife, which was a bizarre little bar called Cha Cha Cha's. It was averagely packed and we spent a while there before calling it around 2am. First stop next day was the Terror Museum, which was a huge insight into ... read more

This entry is marked as Hungary - since there is no entry on travelblog.org for´Das Burgenland', the current easternmost province of Austria - which stayed with Hungary after the countries split at the end of WW1 until the province, formerly Western Hungary, was joined to the new Austrian republic. That is all of the province except for its capital, Sopron (Odensburg in German), which voted to stay in Hungary. Thus the province was without a capital city. The second largest town, changed its name at the time from Mattersdorf or Mattersvillage to Mattersburg or Matterscastle, in order to give it more cachet as a possible capital city but the title went to the contender Eisenstadt which already was called Stadt or City. Both of the towns are still quite small. The province was quite poor ... read more

The ride to Budapest was quick! and the train was suprisingly, English. I mean, first I went with the guys from the hostel since the whole room was heading to the same destination at the same time. Then, all the passport check people could speak really good English! haaaa.... Then came this tourist office girl, giving us maps and directions of the city. She was basically selling the hostel service but then, i think its very good! haaa. Off the train and WOOOOHMMMs of accommodation people just come over and ask......actually its the first time I encounter this in Europe!...haaa Anyways, the hostel I booked was close to the station so it was a short walk. Nice and cozy ne! Then walked tot he city centre of Pest....err...the old town sq area was quite nice..but ... read more
