The overnight train was the only option from Krakow to Budapest, so it had to be done. It would have been okay ïf we didn´t have to share the compartment and didn´t get woken up what seemed like every hour by someone checking our passport or tickets. It also seemed to be the slowest train in the world. Adam spent the whole of the morning being eyed up by the old Hungarian lady sitting next to him, she obviously liked what she saw! Needless to say, when we finally made it to our hostel on the Buda side of the river we were in need of a shower and a nap, followed by a big dinner on the Pest side of the river where most of the restaurants and bars are. I was excited by the ... read more

Thankfully I was on a bit of a buzz after the fun I had in Switzerland so I could (almost) keep up with Jen and her friend, Dean, in the partying stakes when I met up with them in Budapest. This city is geered for the summer party season with large open clubs you'd expect to find on a Greek island rather than an inland Eastern European city. Needless to say, any sightseeing I managed during the day was done under much duress as I nursed my hangovers! And to further prove my theory that its never wise to have firm plans when travelling, I found myself in Hungary for the start of Sziget music festival after I remember being so adament to Jen that I would long be in Romania by that time so it ... read more

Woke up to a cloudy sky but still pretty hot. We were invited over to our Austrian neighbours to show as a snake slithering it was along the ground, just the ticket, we were on high alert of snakes during the day. The sun came out with intense heat, and we dipped in the lake, matt was kindly told he could borrow a windsurfer from a Hungarian couple staying at the campsite, and he pottered around the lake, then later trying his hand at fishing. We have been pretty inundated with campers coming up to the van and steering at the number plates and asking us were are from, word got around camp as a lot of people came up to us and started talking about NZ . The Hungarian man who’s windsurfer matt is using ... read more

Leaving the hotel we made our way to campsite not far about a forty minute drive on the side of Lake Balaton. The area is stunning the lake is shalow and very murky , but everyone seems to get in and enjoy it. We discovered the lake had in house snakes , which only eat mossies for dinner , i made a decision not to hang around too long in the lake . We cilled out in the sun , meet the neighbours and enjoyed a day swimming , reading.... read more

We left Slovenia driving through Austria into Hungary. It was a pretty long day, arriving on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungry a very beautiful lake were tourists flock to. We decided to go for a hotel break and found a great one on the shores of the Lake. We enjoyed a night of pampering, spa, sauna, pool and a room slightly bigger than that of the camper with a bathroom attached. We walked to a local restaurant to taste the local dishes and headed back to the hotel with extremely full tummies.... read more

Hi there, It seems as though travel blog has had a meltdown and lost all of my entries. I hope you had a chance to read them before they were lost. Lara and I are currently in Budapest, Hungary. I will give a bit of a run down on Poland, Slovakia and Hungary where we have been the last week or so. Poland. From Vilnius in Lithuania we jumped an overnight bus down to Warsaw. After walking around the old town and taking a few happy snaps we jumped onto a train and headed for Krakow that same afternoon. Krakow was great. Its old town has a real buzz about it and somehow it escaped damage in WW2. From here we went to Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. The thing that blew me away when I ... read more

Geo: 47.4987, 18.7475Hey there,Well we have been truckin' around Budapest. It is hot here! Only in the 80s technically but friggin' hot when you are in the sun. The first night was pretty low key. We walked down to the Chain Bridge which they close to traffic on the weekends in the summer. Booths set up selling all kinds of stuff. They are very big into wood. They have these giant pencils everywhere.... I wanted to buy one for Steve #2 but Steve #1 wouldn't let me. We ate at Menza (I think it means cafeteria). All decked out in 70s decor. Quite cool. The food was ok, we sat outside which was nice. They give you bright orange blankets if you get cold. Check out www.menza.co.hu for more info. Yesterday we went to St. Stephen's ... read more

Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408Hi all! We have arrived in Hungary... hungry! Yesterday we drove around Kent more. This time we went south to Hythe and Folkstone. We tried to see Lympne Castle but it was closed for a private party, bummer. We then stopped in Folkstone to go to the Martello Towers visitor center but it too was closed (go figure!). The Martello Towers are scattered along the coast and serve/served several functions mainly protecting England from the crazy French. See www.martello-towers.co.uk for more details... I haven't read up on them myself. The visitors center was closed but we did have some fantastic views up there. After Folkstone we drove through Dover and up the coast a bit to St. Margaret's. There is a tiny, twisty road that leads down to the sea. At the "beach" (pebbles ... read more

Budapest is the kinda place you want to make sure you are staying in a nice area before you go. Let’s just say our group of travelers got lucky in terms of a decent place to stay. Before we got to Budapest we made the mistake of taking a night train from Krakow to Budapest through Slovakia, to try and save money on a hostel. It was by far one of the more “shady” journeys I have participated in. The outside of the train looked out of the 1960’s with rust smudges covering the train. We found a private 8 passenger car for the 5 of us, entered quickly, and shut the curtains attempting to make the car look full. It worked on most people but those who tried to enter we just told that the ... read more

Kara took me on a fabulous weekend away for my 30th birthday to Budapest, flying BA from Heathrow, which was a delight after my recent Ryan Air experience. We arrived in to our hotel which was on the river Danube and had a lovely outlook of the Buda Castle. We made the climb to the top, it gave a lovely panoramic view of the city. As luck would have it there was a modernised Opera performance; the setting was lovely surround by ruins (and actually the Hilton, which must have been a hotel, built in the communist area). We started our Saturday by navigating the public transport system to get to the centre of Pest, to join a biking tour (which we spotted the pervious evening and got the details of). The bike tour was an ... read more
