Ive been to Hungary 2 times, this is my most recent trip to Budapest and the Hungarian countryside. Budapest the capital is very inexpensive and very affordable on almost any budget. The Buda side of the city is older with lots of markets and castles for exploring. The Pest side of the city I found to be more laid back were most of the Embassies are located. There on the Pest side you'll find the main train station Keleti station where you can find trains to all destinations within Europe and also to Istanbul, Turkey. I found the best restaurants on the Buda side of the city in particular around the Moszkva terre station. Ive attached some photos, again if you have any questions just ask.... read more

Getting to Budapest was a breeze, and part of the by-now familiar tale - budget flight out of Manchester airport, and enough research done to allow me to reach the hotel at the shoestring end of the budget scale - my sentiments entirely! The city itself, though, was a different picture, and although you still get a good run for your money in the Hungarian capital city, its wealth of tourist attractions and architectural masterpieces suggested to me that you were in the thick of a tourist spot where you'd easily expect to part with more substantial sums of money in order to enjoy the experience. The hotel Gellert is a long-established Budapest institution, and staying there in late August meant full use of its' extensive spa facilities, both indoor and outdoor, and wandering around the ... read more

It was the third year in a row that I have passed through Budapest, and the second time this trip. Therefore, I really wished I liked it more. It’s not that I don’t like it, it is easy and convenient to use as a hub for further travels, the old part of Buda is nice, the people are friendly and it’s quite cheap. I really can’t put my finger on why I have never been taken by it. There are lots of cities I like with less to offer than Budapest. That’s all. I’ll probably be back next year. ... read more

We have had a fantastic day here in Budapest. Today is the national day of Hungary and they sure know how to party! Celebrations have been going on ever since we got here but culminated tonight with an amazing fireworks show. It was hard to know where to look there were so many fireworks going off. It was really impressive and even better because we only had to walk outside the front door of the hostel to see them all. We were unsure whether it would go ahead as there was a really bad storm earlier. We were huddled inside the hostel - Pete teaching the locals to play 500 and eating homemade goulash (of course heaps better than we got in the restaurants!). Luckily the storm cleared up in time for the fireworks to go ... read more

Dalmatia Coast Our bus is clinging to the cliffs and Debra is asleep on my shoulder, so I have to write between the curves and only moving my wrist. We are returning to Split after several nights in Dubrovnik, Athens of Croatia, Pearl of the Adriatic. Dubrovnik is located at the very tip of this crescent-shaped country. The border with Bosnia-Herzegovina runs so close to the east that along one five mile stretch it actually touches the Adriatic, cutting Croatia into two pieces and forcing us through a pair of border crossings. The ragged borders suggest the shreds that Yugoslavia was ripped into after Tito's death and the collapse of communism. We saw more evidence of the ethnic wars walking the walls of Dubrovnik: 80% of the red tiled roofs are new. These replaced the roofs ... read more

We arrived in at Budapest at one of their 3 main train stations (Keleti). We were greeted with a larged arched roof similar to the German stations however the whole station appeared to have a rather dirty and run down appearance. We were staying at a hostel which was near one of the other main stations (Nygati) a bit like the situation in Vienna and we had to work out how to get there. We couldnt seem to find a map of the public transport network other than the metro system however the metro line which connected to Keleti terminal was conveniently closed. All we had was the advice of the guy at the information window who said we needed to catch red trolley bus number 73 from around the corner. The printout we had from ... read more

Well we have now finished with Vienna and are off to Budapest. Vienna is a beautiful city with so much culture. The buildings are really pretty and there are heaps of parks so its nice and green. And the food is great too! We have had schnitzels 2 out of 3 nights here - they are so good. Pete is also kicking himself as we are staying on the longest shopping street in Vienna!! So we have to walk past the shops to go anywhere! He hates it. Today we walked around the grounds of Belvadere Palace, saw the Anchor clock chime at midday (really sweet - 12 important historical Viennese figures all parade past), saw Stephensplatz and went to the museum of Fine Arts. Yes - you heard correctly! There are so many museums it ... read more

I made it out of the Czech Republic, sadly though really. I must say that Cesky (Czesky) Krumlov was a magical town. Not only was Zazou, the hostel receptionist, an absolute joy and dear friend but the town itself really was breathtaking. I think I mentioned that when I got there, a local hostel charged my credit card and fronted me the cash. This was enough for 2 nights of sleeping, 2 meals and the bus to Austria. I am glad I had decided to stay that second night because mid day Zazou frantically told me that people are desperately looking for me. Scared me really, then he said my credit card was still at the hostel. I must say I have been losing my mind with age beyond my head not being clear from the ... read more
