So on to Budapest i went. As you may have come to expect by now, the train journey from Krakow to Budapest was not without incident. On arrival to the train station i met up with the lovely Karina who had been part of the gang who had gone out on the bender around Krakow. We were both going to completely different destinations, Karina to Prague, myself to Budapest but were both on the same train. At 7:30 in the morning, with my brain still unable to function, this did not seem suspicious, so i sat with Karina and carried on talking. I did however end up with the fright of my life when the train split at one of the station with the front end (where i should have been) going to Breclav (where i ... read more

Day 9: Saturday 29 September 2007 What??? No English?? Wake up: 6:30am Breakfast 7am Depart for tour 8:30am This morning Dora took us to Hero’s Square first. I loved it. It had the tomb of the unknown soldier. Along the top of the columns, the statues mean work, war, peace and wealth. The main statue in the centre was of Arc Angel Gabriel. The legend was that the Pope wasn’t sure who to give the crown to… Poland or Hungary. He dreamt the angel told him Hungary. We drove through a park where there were zoos (saw an elephant) swimming pool and artificial lakes that become ice skating rinks. I’d love to see that. We ascended to the Fisherman’s Bastion which had amazing views of the city. We walked along the walls and took photos. Beautiful! ... read more

Day 8: Friday 28 September 2007 Beautiful Budapest and the Blue Danube Wake up 6am bags and Breaky 6:30am Leave 7:30am We headed off for Budapest this morning!! It began pouring rain. Perfect timing. At one point we had to make a detour for roadworks. There was only one sign then nothing. We ended up on a country road through some quaint towns. This was great as we didn’t have to look at highways. There were lots of interesting little towns to drive through. We stopped for morning tea at a Maccas. FREE clean toilets. Even though they had neon lighting and were playing Kylie Minogue. Felt wrong.  Apparently the other local ones were only a hole in the ground, so needless to say we all went here. We moved over the Slovakian border. They ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a quick note today because we haven't been up to a whole lot lately. Yesterday we climbed aboard an overnight train to Hungary. Compared to our last overnight train it was a comparitively short 8hrs, but once again we had to get up early to present our passports (the major drawback to overnight trains). We arrived in Eger nice and early, and set out to explore the city. We started with a great fort that sits just above the city, which was very cool. Unfortunately the long train ride and lack of sleep started to catch up with me and I had to go home for a sleep... my sleep did nothing to make me feel better, and later I developed an upset stomach. At the same time Matthew has come down with ... read more

Today we arrive in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Often I have visited this place in my dreams, imagining a city with old world charm of coffee houses, ornate majestic buildings and many thermal baths. The Donau ( Danube) broad and smooth leads us to Budapest, an enchanting city with a vibrant mix of East and West, Medieval and modern, but mostly known for its two parts the Buda, the hilly city, and the Pest the flat part. The city divided by the Donau is an architectural dream. As we approach the city we see an island within the river, the Margret Insel, named after a king’s daughter who was promised to God if he saved the city from impending harm by an enemy army. The city was spared and 9 year old Marguerite was given ... read more

Hey guys, After we returned to Munich from Croatia, Mark and Kris headed back to the States for a bit. Matt and I were hanging out in Wombat's, great hostel near the train station, and were trying to come up with some travel plans. Luckily, he happened to find a good deal on a train to Budapest, Hungary. On a whim, we bought the tickets for three days in advance and decided that we would go to Budapest, hang out for a few days, and then go backpacking in an area of the Carpathian mountains in the north of the country, near the Slovakian border for a few days. We booked hostels for three nights in Budapest and left all the other details up in the air. When we first arrived in Budapest we had some ... read more

It’s Bi-Polar No Matter What They Say It may be called Budapest, written only as one word, but it’s actually two cities in one - Buda on one side of the river and Pest on the other. Which is better…well, that’s up to you to decide. It feels to me like Pest is the better place to see and be seen since it is the center of life in Budapest. It just feels like more living actually occurs in Pest. Buda, on the far side of Danube, has its towering hill, much like Prague’s Wawel Hill. There you can see a recreated royal palace (a historically inaccurate one at that), one of the city’s greatest churches, Matthias Church (presently covered in scaffolding), and some great tourist trap back streets that are cooler from a distance ... read more

Noticing that the word SEX ensures hits on our blog- we have decided to include it in our title- there is nothing in this blog to do with sex! Well after what seemed to be an eternity, it was Friday and we found ousrelves running for the train again - this time was from work, we decided to go in for half day so we get some paid hours! ha ha We made it to the station and boarded our 1.15pm train to Luton Airport with lunch bag between our teeth and luggage in our hands. It was an uneventful two and half hour plane ride and we arrived safely to Budapest airport and picked up by a coach to take us to our Hotel. It was 9pm by the time we got to the hotel ... read more
