8 nights and 7 days in Budapest, we spent longer here than anywhere else on our trip. During our time we visited a monument park containing the statues and plaques that were removed from the city when Communism fell in 1989. We also just so happened to be in Budapest during the national holiday that celebrated the rebellion, and me and Hawk nearly escaped with our lives when a riot almost broke out and a handful of riot ready police appeared. We also navigated our way through the underground city caves. Dressed in cover-alls and equipped with our helmets and head lamps we crawled on our stomaches, scaled steep ledges, climbed rusty ladders, slid on our bums and squeezed through some of the smallest passages that I didn't think I would ever fit through. 3 hours ... read more

As you may have gathered from our previous blog, after a considerable amount of time in Italy, we were really looking forward to exploring new territory. Budapest provided just the change in pace we were hoping for. Getting there, however, was no easy task. We decided to splurge a little and treat ourselves to a good night's sleep by reserving beds in a sleeper compartment. How silly we were not to anticipate that going through two borders would warrant the need to check passports 8 times in the course of a 12-hour overnight train ride. Could someone please shed some light on the need for such tightly regulated border control into Hungary. I mean... it's HUNGARY!!! Who is trying to illegally sneak into Hungary? Needless to say, we arrived in Budapest tired and baffled. After freshening ... read more

16th October…………Budapest,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I stayed 4 nights (3 days) in Hungary’s capital of 2 million people. I got a single room in the 11th Hour Hostel, probably once an old apartment building. The first couple of nights were spent as the sole occupant of a 6 bed dorm but it was noisy being next to the common area which turned party mode till late with young people from across the planet (many of them Australians, including the daughter of a close friend of my brother’s) playing the usual loud card games. My hot water wasn’t working as well and I had to use another bathroom and so I asked to be moved. I wish I had asked sooner as I was put in a huge updated apartment- separate kitchen, washing machine etc. It had absolutely high, high ... read more

12th October - 13th October............. Gyora, Hungary ................... Bratislava is right on the border of Austria and Hungary and so it wasn't long before I found myself in my 4th country this trip, and all on a bicycle. Hungary does not have the obvious wealth of Austria but it is a return to houses that are more cared for. Rural towns appear as somewhat 'peasant' communities. One gets the impression that not a lot happens here. Gyora on the other hand is quite a large town with a delightful old centre which is popular with tourists, also attracted by the Thermal Spring Bath. I arrived mid afternoon and decided to stay another night so I could spend more time wandering and discovering. There was a wonderful laid back and talented band that got the crowd dancing ... read more

I honestly am trying to post more often. I’m so busy and popular and lazy and stuff. Lusta Vagyok. You know? So!!!!!!! On Thursday I had another field trip with my art class. We went to this museum and saw a very disturbing display of art. Awkward. Or, in Magyarul, “gaz…”. But Friday? So cool! We went to the Rubik’s Cube world competition. We accidentally entered from the back and as a result we were able to watch the competition UP CLOSE. There was this room in which people were solving their cubes, blindfolded. As in, they would look at their cube, memorize what it would take to solve it, put on a blindfold and solve it. They were solving the 3x3x3 cubes, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 cubes. Then there were the CRAZY people who would memorize ... read more

Well, it’s about time I’ve left the westernized cheese and beer world of Europe, and on to the oddities of the East! Budapest is my gateway to …. Weird food! Whoa! More on that soon… Through the rain and beer, I’ve managed to catch myself a sweet little cold, with a whooping cough and runny nose for good measure! I decided since I rocketed through 8 cities in 3 weeks, maybe it was time to take a break, relax, and recover. Besides, Bonnie’s due in my time zone soon, and we all know I need to be in top form for that visit!! I found a heck of a deal in Budapest at a thermal bath/spa resort on Margaret Island. It’s the largest park in Budapest, on an island in the middle of the Danube. Heaven! ... read more

I was in Budapest for the EGEE'07 Conference. I was part of the programme committee in organizing a Business Track within the conference, chaired a session and ran a Grid and Business meeting in order to gather field experts. We had a gala dinner on a boat traveling up and down the Danube River. Eastern Europe and still cleaner than Pisa.... read more

I am so sorry I have been slacking on my updates. I have been so busy writing a paper for my Roma class, I just haven’t had an opportunity to update here. Please don’t hate me J Last weekend was really fun, we had another school field trip on Saturday and Sunday, this time to a city called Pecs. The ‘e’ actually has an accent, but I don’t know how to do accents on here, or at all on a computer. This makes typing in Hungarian really difficult cause accents are a MUST. So last Friday during the day I went on a field trip for my Art/Monument class. We went to the Statue Park. This is a park way on the outskirts of the city that they built to put different soviet statues in. It ... read more

Sorry been a bit lazy on the Travelblog, you would have thought we were on holiday. We hopped on a night train to Budapest we thought it would be a good idea a cute cabin for too, romantic train journey through the night, not quite... We did not know that from Poland to Hungary we would pass through Slovakia which meant being woken up at 2 different border crossings to have our passports checked, obviously at some ridiculous hour. But we made it to Budapest, and our hostel with not much hassle. We booked our hostel on line which Mel would say was quaint, and I say was crap, we were the only ones there which you would think was good. The hostel just smelt funny. So we set out to find different accommodation for the next ... read more

Hi everyone! Good news - we're all healthy again and raring to go!! We've been up to so much since I last updated you, so I hope I have enough time to get it all in... For starters, last time we caught up I was still in Eger - the wine capital of Hungary (Heaven mk I). Just a 20 minute walk from our Pension was a sight to make the most hardened alcoholic weep... There's a small U-shaped valley with close to 200 wine cellars carved into the side of the hill. Each of these cellars will let you buy a small glass of wine for about 100-200 HUF ($1NZD = 135 HUF). Most of the wine is red, but some of them have whites as well. In addition to allowing you to buy tasters ... read more
