As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro. To be updated

Brave New World Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Würzburg
Well, what can I say about Wuerzburg? It's one of those cities which come rain or shine (preferably shine) looks beautiful. Lots of old architecture; lots of little winding streets as well large sweeping ones; lots of Churches and a beautiful market square. Despite the slight rain when I arrived last Monday, I knew that I'd made the right decision to come here over Aachen. To top it off, the accomodation in which I'm living is a lot better than the places I've lived in during my time at York: a huge bedroom, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. However there [View Full Entry]

Freiburg Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Freiburg
Our journey to Freiburg was a rainy train ride but that didn't dampen the beauty of Autumn in the Black Forest. Once we arrived it was a quick tram ride to Charis and Yalany's apartment where we met Ingo and his trusty companion Cappuccino. They all welcomed us with open arms and a delicious homemade pizza was soon to follow. The next day, weary from our travels, Ingo took us to a traditional hot bath house. This place was man made, they drilled down to an underground hot spring and piped it up at a wonderful 55 degrees C. There were [View Full Entry]

I mentioned in my first blog that surely after several years of knowing I was going to do a year abroad that I'd be prepared for it. My answer was no and that is due to one reason: the culture shock. Yes, at the end of the day we are all Europeans but each country is different. After being at university for 2 years where you're no longer a little fish in a big pond by the end of it, leaving your friends and family behind to move to a different place and attend a different university is a big jump [View Full Entry]

Great News!!!  Europe » Germany » Schleswig-Holstein
Hi Everyone, just a quick update....I have received great news today. When I was a wee girlie I really wanted to be a vet, but somehow fell into the 'I need to make money in Business Development' trap instead. You may have come across my travel entries where I swoon over pets & wildlife, I'm a complete nature freak - so I have now decided to spend some time double checking if my calling really was to work with animals....anyway, to make a long story short, tomorrow I start work with the local town vet!!!! They are crying out for help [View Full Entry]

Fantastic wooden heroes Europe » Germany » Bavaria
I am baffled by this creature we discovered recently. He is clearly some kind of wooden friend. He appears to live in the log, but his head (hat?) is part of the outside structure of the log. They have adopted him as their logo, as well. I don't know what kind of childhood tales they have in Germany (I always imagined a fat, lederhosen-wearing, sausage-devouring, beer-swilling protagonist, but I picture this same character in every image I have of Germany). Father (reading from children's book): And so, he emerged from his log... Astute 3-year-old daughter: So, is he part of the [View Full Entry]

In all his actual glory...

So, I'm spending another night in Frankfurt, and making another 400 euros. I spent the day just wandering around Frankfurt, following some tourist map (more or less). You can look at the pictures, but to be honest, Frankfurt is pretty boring. Tomorrow's flights are overbooked as well, but I think it's time to come home (unless they make me an offer I can't refuse). [View Full Entry]

So in the next two weeks, school is out for Fall Break. I will be traveling to Malmö, Sweden for five days, and following that three days in Dresden, Germany and a few days in Prague, Czech Republic. I hope to have some exiting blog entries throughout the next few weeks, but just wanted to keep you all updated. School is getting easier all the time- On friday, I wrote a small essay about Genetics in German and also took a Biology test. I have found a cello group to play with, and am beginning to feel settled in to life [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone, today is my birthday and it feels very strange. I usually have plans to throw myself out of planes, drive Bigfoot vehicles over clapped out police cars, travel to some far distant place to spot an Albratross - or well at least put on some high heels and hit the dancefloor for the night, but today has been very quiet. As I mentioned previosly I am currently visiting family in Germany - my big sister Heidi and her two boys Kieren & Liam. Unfortunately the boys are heading to England today for a two week holiday with their Nana, [View Full Entry]

Walk in the Forest

After leaving Trebenice we were both on a high that can only really be found in a person who has experienced being stranded in a random little town in a country that doesn't speak your language, but still manages to get back on the road... i.e. Della and me. We decided that we really should at least try to see some of Germany on our way home as we drove through both the northern part and the southern part, so we decided to stop in Frankfurt A.M. for the night and see a little of it the following morning before driving [View Full Entry]

Berlin Europe » Germany » District of Berlin » Berlin
Hello, Arrive afternoon of 10/11 (I think) and took a nap because Claire was still sick. We woke up and ate a kebap before going back to bed. Wake next morning and go on walking tour. Berlin has a fairly dark history and the whole experience was enhanced by the cold rain and wind that pounded us most of the day. We saw two movies here, Ugly Truth and UP. I really liked UP. A bit sad for my taste, but that´s simultaneously the same reason I liked it. We visited a work camp called Sachsenhausen. Overall, there was a lot [View Full Entry]
