We were down for breakfast at 7.30am, as instructed. There was a superb choice, including gluten free. We were off by 9.00am and there was a lot of flat to start with. We passed through towns with amazing buildings and large arable farms. We also saw more storks and a few cows but hardly any other animals. We had yoghurts and nuts sat under a tree, on a bench, in the middle of huge flat fields. There was only one real climb, up through some forests, and true to form the path was rutted, gravelly and steep. Fortunately at this point there were only the two of us so we didn't have to navigate other riders as well. Once at the top we crossed over the water shed of the Rhine and Danube rivers. We arrived ... read more

Bavaria D6 The Taj Mahal was a good choice for a change of cuisine with a vast menu. Afterwords I walked with Bob on part of the wall, which is quite long and a very solid structure in good condition giving good views of the town below. This morning he walked the whole if it in 1 1/2 hrs before breakfast. Todays route was fairly flat with the odd hill or two in arable country and typical pleasant villages. Many had the long poles with a straw tyre around them half way up. I gave yet to find out what they are. The skies are blue and the temperature is still in the mid twenties. 15k from the end we took a diversion to either a McDonalds or an Aral fuel station with shop and restaurant ... read more

Bavaria D4 What a pleasant ride today. Just one 2 mile section of gravel and not too much climbing giving my legs a rest from yesterday. Thank you Lyta for lending me your one sided pedals which made life a lot easier. Nice villages and towns again with pleasant buildings and sculptures and a nice coffe stop in Adelsdorf. The cycleways are occasionally bricks and mostly tarmac, which are much better than the Lancashire roads. I found a stork nest on the chimney by my room last night and Dave managed a photo of two heads appearing above the nest. Just after Adelsdorf we saw about 10 in a field and for a treat a couple flying above. We got into Neustadt an der Aisch mid afternoon and I dashed to Aldi for a sandwich and ... read more

We were later down to breakfast than the others, but as we were not settling off until Richard had tried the bike shop for shoes at 9.00. we were ready to set off with the others. Breakfast was typically German with ham and cheese and no cereal. Richard couldn't get any shoes at the bike shop in town but swapped pedals with Lyta who had flat pedals that would be easier with his shoes. We were all off soon after nine. There were a few short sharp hills within the first few miles to get over into the next valley. After that it was relatively flat. We were heading south west all day. We had a cafe stop, late morning, for coffee with a few of the group. We then said we were going to a ... read more

Bavaria D3 The Turkish Cesme restaurant last night was very good. The festival all over town is an event put on by local Protestant churches every two years, with around 100,000 people attending from all over the country. The logo they have, Jetz ist die Zeis means ’The time is now’ with music and singing everywhere. Big shock overnight, I awoke at 4am realising that I had not packed my cycling shoes. A big bag emptying session followed with searches for bike shops on my phone. A Trek shop nearby said it opened at 8am so an early breakfast and off I went only for it to not open at all due to Corous Christie holiday. A Decathlon shop 4 miles away said 9am, so off I sped only to be sat there like a rat ... read more

Tuesday's blog. We were up a little earlier as we wanted a quicker start to allow plenty of time for the train. Breakfast was in the hotel itself. The hotel was very quirky with lots of religious artefacts around and rather cluttered. It also listed itself as a museum. Breakfast was basic but she surprised me with the gluten free bread. Soon we were off into the sunshine and although we were on the Rhine path the Rhine wasn't particularly visible until very close to Cologne. However, it was pleasant cycling on quiet roads at first and cycle paths later, often on the top of dykes. At one point we saw a huge field of strawberry pickers dashing backwards and forwards with baskets of strawberries. As we got near to Cologne the paths became busier and ... read more

Bavaria D2 Continental breakfast at the B&B Hotel before venturing out to do the walking tour of the old town of Nuremberg where Hitler held his rallies in WWll. Firstly we went to the old wall but unfortunately could not find a way to get onto it. We did however come across a sign saying no photographs finding that we had strayed into the red light district with young ladies ( I think) leaning out of the windows with large body parts hanging over the window cill. We did a hasty retreat keeping our eyes down and went to the St Lorenz Church, which was bombed during the war,and luckily rebuilt to its former magnificence with its twin towers. There are many old magnificently restored buildings around town which are unique to this part of Europe. The ... read more

Monday's blog. No internet in the hotel Another hot sunny day and after breakfast we were soon out of Venlo on quiet roads There were a few very gentle inclines but nothing much. We passed through lots of forests and park areas and a flying field for very small aircraft. There were lots more stables with horses and lots of tiny foals. At one stage we passed through the Krickenbecker area on paths with lakes at both sides. Cycling through one small town we spotted a Penny supermarket so stopped to buy some yogurts and sandwiches. As the day went on we arrived in a more urban area and passed through Neuss and round the edge of Monchengladbach. Cycling through Neuss was all on cycle paths on the pavements which was slow going watching out for ... read more

Tomorrow many of us will be travelling across Europe to start a 16 day cycle tour of Bavaria. Some of the 12 participants are already on their way having visited relatives along the way, or travelling by train and cycle. This is a BIKEXPLORE tour lead by me in this wonderful area of Germany, rich in history and traditional architecture. Much of the route will be on excellent cycle paths in the country and along its vast river network. The tour starts and finishes in Nuremberg going in an anticlockwise direction for 860km passing through Augsburg, Munich and many other impressive towns, following such rivers as, Aisch,Eger, Isar and Danube. We hope that the weather will be kind to us , as it has been for the past three weeks in the UK. The forecast is ... read more

Dear All Greetings on this my second and final blog entry on my lovely little mini-trip to Cologne and around during the summer half-term. This will relate my last two days on the trip, starting from a really wonderful second full day – while my first full day I devoted to Cologne, my second was to Bonn. After all, the airport I flew into was called Cologne-Bonn Airport, so I thought, why not do them both! In actual fact the city of Bonn always intrigued me as a child, as I'd always learned in the eighties that Berlin was the capital of East Germany, and Bonn was the capital of West Germany. I'd already been to Berlin on my 1999 Interrailing trip, and although it didn't feel it at the time, it was really not comparatively ... read more
