As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro. To be updated

Legoland!
Legoland!
Can you see Daniel's excited face!?
Hi all. It has fallen upon me (Dan) to write today’s informative, enthralling and otherwise witty blog entry. I know that you are all breathlessly waiting to read what happened in Legoland today. Well let me put an end to your suffering and baited breath. Today we, that is Monique and I, toddled of to one of the Legolands, this one happened to be in Deutschland. I have always been a fan of Lego and when I was somewhat younger I decided that I needed to go to Legoland. That did not happen as Lego did not recognise the vast importance [View Full Entry]

This morning I woke up at 8:50, got ready, and met Sabine and Mandy at the U-Bahn stop. They also had another friend with them, Altin. We had breakfast in a nice little cafe. Their breakfast deal was two rolls, with honey & marmelade, a little bit of fruit, an egg, and a drink (I had green tea). I enjoyed practicing my german with them and then they invited me to a youth service at 7. After breakfast they went to Uni Hamburg to use the internet, and I came too. After that, I took the bus back to the Hauptbahnhof, [View Full Entry]

Kölner Dom with Scaffolding
Kölner Dom with Scaffolding
The cathedral is almost perpetually under construction or renovation, and numerous parts both inside and out are covered with scaffolding.
Today we took a day trip to Köln, a.k.a. Cologne, the birthplace of eau de cologne and one of the largest cities in Germany. It was a day filled with changeable weather - sun, clouds, wind, mist, and rain - and many, many steps (over 1018 of them!) After our train ride, we started out at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne's museum of modern and contemporary art. It's right next to the cathedral (a.k.a. the Kölner Dom), which is itself right next to the central train station-- all very convenient. You can even see the Dom from the end of many of [View Full Entry]

Does anyone Know the name of this sport?
Saturday was really awesome. I'm starting to think Germans have really crazy sports, but I guess we have them back home too it's just that I never really paided attention or attended any of them. So I found myself somewhere in the middle of the Bergisches forest with Clara my host sister and her ski trainer attending skisha (I'm not sure of the name) but the point is everyone was skiing down a hill in august on the glass. I found it different. Usually skiing is done on snow well from the part of the world I come from but apparently [View Full Entry]

My hotel in Kronberg
My hotel in Kronberg
This is the hotel that I stayed in with Pieter (shown being a doofus) in Kronberg when I flew in from Frankfurt. It is owned by the royal family and they are often seen walking around!
Well, I've been here about 10 days now. The culture shock here has been different in a few ways from Australia and my Euro trip last year. In Australia, I hadn't expected any so I was sent reeling for a little bit, and throughout my 5 month endeavor there, things would still blow my mind. Example... last week I was there I tried to get some film develop and it was like 20 bucks! Euro trip was different still because even though I was going to all these new cultures, I wasn't really -experiencing- them the way you do if you [View Full Entry]

August 19th, 2008: The Tour rides again! Unfortunately, Erin couldn't make this trip, so it's just Jesse & Margaret on this trip. Jesse started out by almost missing his flight from San Jose. Made it with 10 minutes to spare. The dynamic duo met up in Phoenix to continue on to Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the bird was bent. In other words, the aircraft was having issues and they were working to repair any problems. The flight was originally supposed to depart at 10:11am. We finally loaded up the bird and were buttoned up and ready to fly by noon, but now the [View Full Entry]

This morning I didn't really know what to do so I went out shopping looking for a wallet and found a small one for about 5 Euro. I discovered that the Germans don't really have much different wallets than in America. After shopping I got some chinese food and then I went to the HAW to use the internet. I found the computer lab and it worked good. =) After that I called my mom and then I lazed around awhile not knowing what to do. Then at 18:00 I went to the Hauptbahnhof, bought a 10 day transportation ticket, and [View Full Entry]

'allo! (I've decided thats how Europeans pronounce it). So we are here in Cologne, and Erin and Stephen made it yesterday (no, they didn't get put into the 2 beds in my room, but they are just downstairs). Yesterday morning I went to the cathedral. Words cannot describe how amazing it is, so I don't even think I'll try. Its huge...to say the least! I didn't end up taking a tour because they had pamphlets that did a good job explaining (plus I took a year of art history over 2 years ago...that should be enough, right???). I took so many [View Full Entry]
