As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro. To be updated

I've posted a few more pictures that I took on my last night in Berlin... And now they are actually there. These pictures I took the night after realizing that all of my Berlin/Copenhagen photos were lost.. [View Full Entry]

Things have been pretty calm here lately- a few small excursions during the weekends, last weekend to Münster which was a very beautiful little university town with a heck of a lot of old churches. While there we saw a lot of the town as well as visiting the Zoo, and learning some bizarre animal names, for example 'Meerkat' translates to 'Erdmann' = " earth man" and that 'Seal'='Robbe' however most of the names were pretty familiar. In the next weekends, I have a lot planned- Next weekend I'm cooking Thanksgiving Dinner, the weekend after that the rotary exchange students are [View Full Entry]

Yes, I am incredibly lazy. Its been a while I know, and while I would like to say that I haven't really been anywhere or had time to write but the truth of the matter is, I am simply lazy! There is an art to packing lightly. An art that I believe I have mastered. After travelling through Ireland with my HUGE backpack I decided that I would no longer travel with that pack unless completely necessary and since then I have been taking less and less each time I boarded a plane for a trip away. When I went to [View Full Entry]

I have been meaning for a while to write about our recent trip to the Czech Republic as well as to Southern Germany. My cousin Hana lives in Moravske Budejovice, a city in the Southern Moravia region of the Czech Republic. Sylvia's best friend Janka and her husband Fred live north of Stuttgart (the home of Porsche and Mercedes cars) in a city called Ludwigsburg. Our first stop on the trip was to visit my relatives in Moravia. This region is from where many of my relatives on both my father and mothers' sides of the family emigrated. My dad's family [View Full Entry]

Germany. I never really had any great dreams of visiting Germany but it happened to lie between Switzerland & Holland and my rail pass required bordering countries so Germany got added to my itinerary by default. Despite the cold (the average temperature was about 10 degrees) I’m so glad it did. I started in Munich because the American boys in Switzerland said that if I wanted to see beer halls, lederhosen, and oompa bands Bavaria was the place to visit. After fueling up on a stick of bratwurst, I took a bike tour of the city lead by a cheeky guy [View Full Entry]

Well, it's been a while since I had time to sit down and write another blog entry, and 4 weeks have passed since my 21st. So instead of the usual in depth rambling of what I've been up to, I've decided to make this one a comparison of student life in Germany and student life in the UK. After 6 weeks of being here, I've experienced a fair amount and after a nice trip back to York last weekend, it's made me think a lot about the differences between the two. Lectures (Vorlesungen) It's been 4 weeks since the official start [View Full Entry]

Well, as most of you know this past weekend was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Prior to my excursion to Berlin I didn't know much about the wall besides the basics-we're talking bare minimum basics. I would describe this trip as short and intense. It was a lot of information to process and experience. My traveling buddy and I went to the Jewish History Museum that was really cool they had a lot to offer in their exhibit and it covered a wide range of Jewish History without focusing excessively on the Holocaust. We also went [View Full Entry]

5th March '09: Namibian, never a picture of athleticism, has taken a turn for the worse. With sunken eyes and clutching a bottle of cough mixture, he looks like a Peruvian spectacled bear. His nose runs as he asks how far it is to the shopping centre. My reply - ' a fifteen-minute walk' - has him wincing, and coughing; rather than attempt such an undertaking, he shuffles despondently round his trailer. It’s as though I’ve suggested a twenty-mile trek through searing desert. What he desperately needs - aside from new lungs, new feet and a hairstyle - is an extension [View Full Entry]

Beer and Lederhosen Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Lederhosen. Weiner sausages. Oompah Bands. Welcome to Deutschland! Let’s start at the beginning: Elyse and I caught our first night train from Venice to Munich on Thursday night. We had our own beds, which were super comfortable as opposed to having to sit in a stiff seat for 7 hours! We arrived bright and early in Germany, where we met Samantha and grabbed some Starbucks (any European that has a Starbucks is automatically one of my favorites!) We headed out to explore the city…too bad the city didn’t open until practically 10! So we spent some time wandering around unti [View Full Entry]
