As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro. To be updated

1st weekend trip! Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Ulm
Our first weekend trip! Saturday December 12th-13th Ulm, Ravensburg, Beinfurt Our first weekend trip we headed south to visit Nick's family. We made a few stops to do some sightseeing. The weather on the way there wasn't too bad. Cold and a few flurries with no accumulation. Our first stop was in Ulm to see the Ulm Minster. One of the tallest churches in the area. I remember studying this church back in my art history days but unfortunately I didn't remember too much information. It took us quite awhile to find parking in that some places you have to have [View Full Entry]

Cologne Christmas Markets Europe » Germany
This past weekend I went to Cologne to visit the Christmas markets. The city of Cologne offers seven Christmas markets in total and they are among the best Christmas markets in Europe. Among them are four big Christmas markets - at the Cologne Cathedral, in the Alter Markt, in the Neumarkt and in the Rudolfplatz. I arrived in Cologne around 11:00am, just when the markets and shops were opening. The train station was right beside the Cologne Cathedral and the Christmas market. It was pouring rain when I got to Cologne but I managed to look around the market quite a [View Full Entry]

Berlin is poor but sexy! (Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor, in a press interview, 2003); The best introduction you can use for Berlin version 21st century. In July 2008, I was going for my second time in Berlin. My first was in 2006, with my old time fella Amine and that was the best 5 days of the trip. This time I would spend 9 days in Berlin, in a trip that I planned with my parents. I would meet them at hauptbahnhof the brand new gigantic train station (I was really proud to see the logo of Bombardier a company from [View Full Entry]

This is a city visited by millions every year. The 4th largest city in Germany. I travelled from Brussels 5 Dec 09 using Thalys train arriving in Koln about 10.55am. Try to book early if not it will cost you much more. I was charged 44euro one way. The Koln Hbf is HUGE. And the toilet EXPENSIVE! 1 euro per entry. McClean on the toilet label - Hmm since when MacDonald venture into cleaning business? Anyway I paid to see and well its nothing exciting. Next time use the toilet at Romano-Germanisch museum. Its free! First stop - Koln Tourisme. Got [View Full Entry]

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is totally over the top about Christmas - but that makes it a great place to visit at Christmas time. I kind of imagine the locals must be something like the Who's in Whoville (from How The Grinch That Stole Christmas) who must plan for Christmas all year. When we visited Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road in September, on a whim we drove home via Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It was so beautiful (a medieval walled city, almost 1000 years old) but being 5pm on a Sunday afternoon, [View Full Entry]

Happy Holidays to All!! Fröhlich Weihnachten!! As many of you know, we are spending another year in Germany. Last time (2002-2004) we were in the Ruhr Valley, in Bochum, the far west of the country near the border with the Netherlands (click on map at left to enlarge; Bochum isn't on the map, but it is very near Essen (far left). This year we are on the other side of the country in Berlin where Bernard is an external lecturer (in English) of international humanitarian law for the German Red Cross.
