July 22, 2023 – Exploring
Berchtesgaden I wake up fresh and roll over, Kirsten is gone. Are you shocked she has already walked to the bakery and returned with breakfast bread. I’m thinking she might be an honorary member of the Elf community. They are still warm from the oven; I can smell them as I’m walking into the kitchen.
Kirsten and Bea make us another perfect German breakfast. Bread, meats, cheeses, coffee, and cutup vegetables and most important soft-boiled eggs. A German breakfast isn’t complete without soft-boiled eggs.
At breakfast, Kirsten reviews with us today’s agenda, broken down by the hour. Yea, when in Germany everything must be planned and scheduled to the last degree. Ja Vol!
First, we are walking through the Klamm, WHAT’S a Klamm you ask? It’s a German gorge but BIGGER. Water is coming off the mountains and down to the river and has cut a major gorge. It’s a 1 ½ hour walk to the beginning and at that time you’re at a small chapel call Maria Gern. You can take a bus back to your car or you must walk 1 ½ hour back.
AlmbachKlamm. Omi, Kirsten and I walked
this a few years back, lots of great memories. You can take the bus back, that cost euros and the schedule doesn’t align with Kirsten schedule, so we walk back.
Second, we are scheduled at 1 o’clock to board Boat 61 at the
Koenigssee, this is a huge lake, did I say HUGE in Berchtesgaden. Across the huge lake is the famous cathedral of St Bartholoma. However, that’s not the only cathedral we’re going to see. We are hiking another 1 ½ hours up the side of the mountain to see the Eiskapelle or Ice Chapel. It’s where the glacier is coming off the Watzman mountains and forms an ice cave under it.
I’ve walked to the Eiskapelle before, the first time I walked into the Eiskapelle was over 20 years ago. Yea, it’s impressive. So off we go, again, hiking up another mountain. Well, I’m very sad to report that the ice chapel has melted away significantly. Each time I have hiked to it I have found it to be little smaller. This time it was significantly smaller. YIKES! Global warming is real.
Once we get back to St Bartholoma, we take a very well-deserved break
and have multiple BEERS and snacks! It’s now 5 pm and the return boat rides stop running around six, so we get in line and finally get on our boat and head back across the lake. Interesting to note...all boat traffic on the lake is electric, no gas motors anywhere.
It’s 7:30 going on 8 pm and were off again looking for a restaurant. Yes, we are tired, hungry, and itchy. No one is saying anything so not to upset the other one. Kirsten whips it into the first German restaurant she finds and says IS THIS OK? We all standup straight and say YA! Frau Kirsten.
After dinner we returned to our house and played cards. I lost again dammit, oh well off to bed I go, tomorrow begins our next adventure.
Good night .....
