Reutlingen and Kassel We have in more than one of the previous blog entries from this summer in Germany mentioned that we deliberately tried to avoid visiting castles and palaces. Still we have already published a bunch of pictures of castles and palaces, so you might argue that we have failed here. In this blog entry we have to admit that we have more than failed in this regard. It leans more towards a total fiasco since the blog starts with a castle on a hill outside Reutlingen and almost half of the pictures come from when we visited a palace garden in Kassel. Lichtenstein Castle Lichtenstein Castle was built in the mid 19th century. It is dramatically perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking a valley below. The altitude difference between the bottom of ... read more

My first week back in Germany after my year in Singapore was busy. I arrived in Frankfurt on the morning of the 19th of March and had to catch a train to Hamburg instead of my flight because of the Lufthansa pilots’ strike. I had intended to meet Mizzi for breakfast and then made some appointments with my colleagues from around the world who were in Hamburg for our international client event and partner meeting. However, I had to cancel them all and was of course not amused. Ultimately I arrived in Hamburg around noon and Mizzi met me at the train station. It was awesome to see her! We left my luggage at the left luggage office and had lunch and coffee in town together. Then she went back to work and I went home ... read more

Another good breakfast at the hotel then after packing up, we walked to Karlsaue Park which is a huge parkland area along the river in the middle of town. It is actually the landscaped gardens in front of the renowned Orangerie, which is a veryornate hothouse originally used for over-wintering the citrus trees in this cold climate. It looked more like a small palace complete with its own separate 2-storey kitchen building. Em ran around the parkland through the trees and along the canals, picking flowers and singing the songs from Disney’s Frozen while pretending to be Elsa – dad got to be Ana… thanks Aunt Bek! Then it was on to Fritzlar which has one of the oldest surviving town walls in Germany at around 1300 years old. The cathedral and some of the buildings ... read more

Apparently, people get up late around here – breakfast doesn’t start until 8:30!! While we waited, we went out for a walk. There are little statues of the different fairy tales dotted around the tiny village gardens and Em picked them all out. It was a bit of a challenge keeping a 3 year old waiting 2 hours for breakfast but it was worth the wait! What a wonderful start with fresh warm rolls, croissants, cereal, eggs, yoghurt, fruit, coffee and Em even got a hot chocolate! Having full bellies, we got moving and stopped just a few miles more down the road in the village of Hann Muiden. A bit of a surprise stop but we wondered around the old medieval town before Em spotted a good looking stone tower high above across the river. ... read more

We traveled by regional train to Kassel from Marburg. An hour's trip at a cost of 40 euros for 2. Not cheap! Alighted at the Wilhelmshohe Bahnhof which is about 4 km west of the city centre. Our hotel is next to the station and we were greeted by a very friendly lady on reception who gave us a free ticket to ride on all public transport and informed us that we had come at a good time because the town is having a "big party" this weekend. Every year Hessentag festival is celebrated around the city's centre. This was a pleasant surprise as we arrived on Friday and could look forward to this "party". A delicious gulaschsuppe (spiced soup with stewed meat) at a local biergarten and a hausmacher bratwurst (home made sausage) was our ... read more

Since my last entry I managed to carry some things out - Getting some decent hiking gear In my point of view, hiking gear is one of the most important things. I will try to travel as light as possible with a backpack weighting not more than 10 Kg at departure. Tent and sleeping bag count 2,5 Kg - and I've spend less then 250 bucks for both. Yeah! :) I will upload a picture later on. - Improve travel time table I think I have to take Borneo out of my route. 7 weeks are not enough to do the whole planned Asia route and I don't want to feel the need to hurry up every time I watch the clock. That's why I am going from Singapure direct to Indonesia. I've planned to climb ... read more

I have always kept the big idea of traveling through the world in my mind - especially going to Australia. A large unknown country with many secrets to explore and adventures to survive. The final decision to do so arrived early in 2012 out of nowhere since this year will (probably) be the last chance to make a dream come true for a very long time. So I started to take action. I've turned the internet upside down to gather as much information as possible. The hardest thing for me was to find cheap and proper flights. Hard to do because proper flights are often expensive and the cheap flights are often very inconvenient. But in the end I worked it out and booked with Qantas. The big plus to fly with Qantas are the bonus ... read more
