In a land of fairytales, lives a woman who knows them all by heart. Not only does she know them, she uses them to explain her feelings; to explain how she sees the world. “There once was a King, who everyone thought was very smart. Then there was a man in the town who wanted to show that the King was not as smart as everyone thought he was, so he made him fine dresses and then King wore them into town. Then the man laid out nothing and when the King came out he said, ‘Where is it? I see nothing.’ And the man said, ‘Can you not see it? It is right here. You must not be very smart if you cannot see the special dress I have made for you.’ So the King, ... read more

Having rested up in Leipzig it was time to continue our journey across Germany. Tonight we intend to have a one night stopover in Kassel. Knowing we had all day to reach our destination we decided to meander through German country side and see some real Germany other than what you see, or rather don’t see, from a motorway. Driving along a minor highway we noticed the turnoff to Colditz. From our memories this place name has a connection with WWII stories seen on film, TV and in novels. The main attraction of the town is its castle. It stands dominant over the town and appears to be undergoing renovation. The castle’s fame was as a POW prison for persistent escapees, several of whom were New Zealanders. This little detour was not on our sightseeing list ... read more

Derrick and I got up early and said our goodbyes to Berlin, there was so much to do and see and the few days we spent there were not enough! We boarded our train for our short trip back to Kassel to meet back up with Derrick’s family. Alina picked us up at the train station with a friend who was from Pennsylvania who had spent the past year in Germany and she spoke great German! It also happened to be Alina’s birthday so Derrick had picked her up a book as a birthday present. We got back to Alina’s house and I learned that Germans do birthdays a little differently as there was no singing or big birthday hoopla! We all ate cake and then Alina’s Dad, Detlef, took us all to the local brewery ... read more

Today my hosts Shakila and Yannic decided, since the weather looked promising, to go firstly for a walk around Kassel which is known for its modern art installations. Quite near the centre of the city is a massive park once belonging to nobility with laid out formal gardens and some museums. Lastly we grabbed some bread rolls at a little bakery and a drink and headed to the Schloss and Schloss park Wilhelmshöhe right on the edge of Kassel. This is a massive park with lakes, waterfalls, gardens, forests, castles, statues, walkways and paths, museums and castles. It's a beautiful place, tranquil, well laid out and great for a picnic. Most museums are closed on Mondays in Germany as we found out. ... read more

I woke up in Kassel the most rested I had been in a while and I had even dreamt! I was running low on clean clothes so I asked Helmar if I could wash a load in his washer. He is such a kind fellow and proceeded to get the washer ready to be used, I had no idea it was such a long process or I would have thought twice about asking! He had to find the cables, then run them along the hallway, and then find the right plug and plug it in. Luckily I already had my laundry sorted into “everything in the bag goes . . . including the bag” so that made it a little easier. I was going to be so happy that I had a backpack full of clean ... read more

I got up around 5:30 so I could get to the train station so I could meet Derrick since we were going to Kassel that morning and his flight got in around 6:10 am. I was checking out before breakfast which was sad, but the train stations have really good food as well. As I left the hostel there were still some people finishing up partying on the street as I saw a guy chug the last of a beer (I am in the red light district). I rode the train to the airport where I was meeting Derrick, his plane was getting in at 6:10, but then he would have to get through customs so it would take him a bit to get out of the airport. I got there just before 6:30 and quickly ... read more

Off again with the Tomtom loaded for the days destination of Kassel some 200km north and we decided on straight up the autobahn, oh shit not again, before we go any further on this blog I have to tell you about the German drivers, it is no wonder Germany produces some of the best F1 drivers in the world on a regular basis, they practice on the bloody autobahns, trust me you may think hey cool no speed limits but when you are new to the right hand drive roads and you have big Merc's and BMW's blowing past you at better than 180k you wake up and smell the roses. Add to that they have no manners at all just like Auckland drivers, if you are in the wrong lane more than a couple of ... read more

...time to put the old horse down. :) I just came back from the open flair of festival. It was awesome, the Hives, Adam Green, Ärtzte and Panteon Rococo. Just so much good music and barely any sleep in three days. I'm really tired and got an aching head but the show must go on. So I'm going through all my stuff today. Making sure I'm not gonna forget anything but which is, by the way, most likly to happen. One really good thing happend today! After waiting for days that seemed month to me, finally my new camera has arrived. A Nikon D 80. I got all the other stuff like lenses and filters last week, just the camera was sold out when I ordered. But now all is good. Sun is shining weather is ... read more

So here we go. We have excactly six days left before we take off to Dublin, Ireland. I still need to have a look on the map and decide where we're gonna go. We, by the way, is my buddy Stefan and me and me that is Chris. We want to hike across Ireland, mainly hitchhiking. That was my idea. I think there's too little left of roadculture, at least in mainstream society. I started hitchhiking last year in the US. All across the country from sea to shining sea and back. It wasn't as badass as it might sound, I was accommodated by a ton of nice people, everywhere I went. Still from time to time I put up my tent somewhere next to the highway, falling asleep to the gentle rocking of passing semi ... read more
