Off again with the Tomtom loaded for the days destination of Kassel some 200km north and we decided on straight up the autobahn, oh shit not again, before we go any further on this blog I have to tell you about the German drivers, it is no wonder Germany produces some of the best F1 drivers in the world on a regular basis, they practice on the bloody autobahns, trust me you may think hey cool no speed limits but when you are new to the right hand drive roads and you have big Merc's and BMW's blowing past you at better than 180k you wake up and smell the roses. Add to that they have no manners at all just like Auckland drivers, if you are in the wrong lane more than a couple of seconds they really let you know, the waves they gave us were not friendly so we just waved and smiled the jokes on them. But first it was off to a store called IKEA a "warehouse" type store but not like any you have seen, this thing is huge, 3 levels and each level the size of a small NZ city mall, you have to
have a map and arrows on the floor to guide you around and god help you if you travel in the wrong direction, the Germans mostly are intolerant and rude to the point it gets up your nose, but we have met some great individuals. Anyway this a Huuuuggggeee store the likes we had never seen before and it was hard to find things believe me.
The problem we have had is buying things you take for granted, hardly anyone speaks English the signs are in German and just to buy a stick for the laptop is a mission, first finding a sales person who speaks English, then trying to understand them as often their English is minimal and then the stuff they sell you is written in bloody German, Pam finally found an internet stick for the laptop and found the installation was all in German not as simple as you think, and still the bloody thing won’t work, also if anyone tells you internet or data is cheap in Europe they are WRONG WRONG WRONG, it is not, €25 for a stick then €5 per day isn’t cheap. Ok off to Kassel 200km north. Travelling along the
autobahn and leaving the city behind was a good feeling and some of the scenery along the way was just stunning, wooded hills for miles and you would all of a sudden drop off a downward slope around a gentle bend and be confronted with a beautiful cutting through a hill as the road sweeps around, quite stunning and once you got used to the right hand drive thing a big powerful car would be a blast.
We found our camp ground easy as and it has to be the hoadiest looking place in the world (there was a lawn mower on the deck!!! by the reception door but the guy at the counter was a great young guy and the facilities were just excellent, in fact the best showers we have had. We found a spot right close to the river and settled in to a cold night, around -3 we reckon. The place was called the Fulda.
Camping platz Fulda-Camp Kassel highly recommended for a great stop.
