Due to the jet lag and a ray of sunlight coming through the room, my parents got up at 4:30 on 19 June. I got up early on that day. As instructed, we walked to Hotel Atrium to have breakfast. There were various types of bread, fresh vegetables, hot meals, e.g. sausages, scrambled eggs, cheese, fruits and coffees and teas, and we selected the food from the buffet breakfast. It was a walking distance between our hotel and Hauptbahnhof (central station), we walked to the station every day. There were loads of Asian restaurants along the main road towards the station. Firstly we popped in the tourist information centre and bought “Frankfurt Welcome Card” for the group, which was €19. This pass allowed us to travel on the public transport and get deductions for museums on ... read more

Gondoltam, ismet elutazom - ezuttal Frankfurtra gondoltam. Today was a drive of hell to Frankfurt, I never drove in the mountains before, (maybe they are actually hills, but to me they were mountains) and then it started to rain too, and not just a little pouring. no, i could hardly see anything. The car kept slipping, and i had NO idea how to climb a mountain, it was pretty terrifying at that moment, but now i can laugh about it. Thinking about it, it was pretty silly, me squeezed between two ginormous trucks, talking with a high pitched voice coz of the nerves. Especially when the huge truck behind me started to honk his horn and flash his lights. We took the first exit we could find and checked the car, i was afraid i had a flat tire, or anything else that ... read more

Alright everybody! “What’s going on with your Working Holiday Visa?” you’re all asking, well there are a couple of issues to be honest. When I contacted the German Consulate in Vancouver (the issuing authority responsible for issuing residents of BC the visas) I was told that it was not possible to get the WHA in Germany, it can only be issued outside of the country, specifically in Canada. When I asked if it would be issued outside of Germany, say at a German Consulate in Switzerland, I was told that this should be possible, though they would probably have to liaise with the Vancouver consulate to do so. Before booking my train ticket to Bern (I bet you didn’t know that was the capital of Switzerland did you? Probably thought it was Zurich) however, I went ... read more

So reflection time again! What have I gained from my past 7 months in Australia? A healthy respect for football keepers (soccer goalies) after badly spraining my wrist prevented me from working a renovation job I had just started, a love of road trips and waking up at sunrise to go swimming on the beaches before sneaking onto camp sites to shamelessly use the facilities without paying for them, an affirmation that despite the fact that a town may be half hippie/half surfer, it’s still half hippie and is at great odds with my blue collar heritage. I enjoy barbequing with friends in the park, and like getting out into the clubs once in a while with them for a good time, I can survive on little money and even thrive after throwing myself across a ... read more

This was my last real day in Frankfurt. My first stop was the Museum für Kommunikation. It was fascinating. Upstairs was a DIY (Do It Yourself) section which was mostly handicrafts and a few signs. They did have a ‘work station’ where you could make buttons or tinker with circuits and such. Downstairs though was where the permanent display was set up. There are 7 sections; the first one was about how communication started pictures and signals before the written word. Each section then progresses to the invention of mail and the postal system and then radio, television, phones and finally computers and the Internet. The signs on the walls were all in German but at the beginning of each “section” there was a book with the English translation of all the signs in that section. ... read more

I woke up to a chilly, windy and gray day. I spent the morning travelling on the train. I am pretty sure that I can now make my way to the Hauptbahnhof without getting too lost. I also went back to get my movie. After doing some research it appears that Bluray’s are separated into 3 regions (A,B & C) however most Bluray discs can be played in any region. Not the one I wanted however. I ended up getting the DVD because at least I know how to change the region code on a computer, (also it was cheaper). For a change from supermarket fare I decided to go to McDonald’s for lunch. It was very expensive!! €6 for a Big Mac combo!! I went to the Architecture museum in the afternoon. It was interesting, ... read more
