So there we are, a full hour and ten minutes before departure at the security check at gates E2-E5 at Frankfurt airport, having had a pleasant hour in the Sky Lounge, reminiscing about how much nicer it was than last year when we were stuck in the airport for twelve hours due to a scheduling cock up. I empty my pockets and walk through the metal detector, rolling my eyes in a smug manner at the inexperienced air traveler at the next scanner who had to go through four or five times, each time removing keys, coins or a phone from a pocket, obviously annoying the security personnel. I'm watching my bag go through the X-Ray scanner, the woman stops, zooms in and scrolls through the filters, my bag goes back out and is turned 90 ... read more

Finally – Deutschland, and the longest bloody Monday I’ve ever had. (32 hours to be exact – as we flew to outrun the sunset) After disembarking at Frankfurt International Airport, I couldn’t help but recall a story from Keith Richards (a close personal friend of mine who also just happens to play guitar!) as to how someone threw a frankfurter at him on stage in Frankfurt, and then at a concert in Hamburg (well you can guess what was thrown at him whilst there!). Fortunately, we didn’t have to duck from any flying German cuisine. It was with baited breath that I waited for unsere Gepäke (our bags) to discover if they had made the connecting flight and also as to how the grog survived. My day-pack was the last to come off the carousel, and.................... ... read more

St Goar and to Mainz then Frankfurt - 13 Oct Set an alarm in St Goar for breakfast - cannot do cold meat and cheese for b'fast tho - I'd rather eat soused herrings (as in Finland) thanks rather than lunch at that hour. A brief walk along the few shops and dawdling seniors. Then onto the boat at 12.20 - smaller and more crowded than yesterday. As far as Rudesheim - and then had to wait almost an hour for train to Mainz-Castel. Waste of time as I found out - should have gone to Wiesbaden and then got train to Mainz-Hauptbahnof as -Castel is obviously on the wrong side of river from main part of town (I need a proper map!). Abandoned that idea and waited a further 40 mins for a train to ... read more

Frankfurt am Main. So named because there is another Frankfurt in eastern Germany lol. We came here with our hearts in our hands and sharp whitt bubbling across our lips. Our lives were going to change, for better or worse, and Frankfurt was the place it was going to happen. A couple of young go getters, with naught but a prodigious banking knowhow and a zest for corporate life. The centre of finance for europe was our ladder, we were on our way to the top... of a building with a lookout, see photos attached. Our plans to conquer this city of banking failed to take shape however, mainly because they were and are imaginary. We did come here not expecting much and instead were welcomed to a bustling red light district on the cusp of ... read more

Coming to Germany Our flight to London was ok. Nothing spectacular happened except we sat next to a Swedish writer who was great to talk to. He also had been to Australia so we talked about that for a while. When we got to England, we had to get onto a underground train within the airport to get to our terminal. To get into the terminal there was another extreme customs check (not as strict security as Mumbai though). Our plane was initially delayed (well that’s what it said on the screens) but ended up leaving and arriving on time. When we got into Frankfurt we were amazed to find the terminal almost completely empty. It was like a ghost town! We worked out that we had flown into the secondary terminal 2. Once we ... read more

Moving back west, my last destination before I headed back to England was the emerging European financial capital of Frankfurt. Not an obvious destination, but I headed there specifically because a friend from London had recently moved there and he had invited me to come and visit. Frankfurt was basically what you would expect from a financial centre; office buildings and more office buildings. Mind you, these office buildings were one hell of a lot more attractive and spectacular than the ones in London. There were lots of glass-clad skyscrapers, which were actually in tune with the more historic buildings and multitude of green open spaces. The underground network couldn’t be less like London’s, with clean, spacious stations and clean, efficient trains. The really surprising thing was that it seemed to be down to people’s honesty ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and had breakfast. After breakfast we went and had a walk in the Borghese Gardens. After walking for some time we came and started to pack for that day we were leaving for Frankfurt. After packing and paying our bill we caught a taxi to the airport. When we got there we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. After waiting for some time we were called out to the aircraft. After boarding it we fastened our seat belts and pre-pared for take off. By the way Mummy didn't like the idea of flying "Alitalia" which was the name of the line. After taking off the pilot headed straight up. When he got right up he started to bump, and we ... read more
