The Bike Lodge Hotel had everything a cyclist staying overnight needed, including washing machines and driers which we were in dire need of. Washing clothes in showers and basins only gets things so clean. As soon as we hit the room we filled a bag with clothes (including the days riding clothes) and took them down to set on a wash cycle and then back to the room to relax. Some time later an alarm went off and persisted. After about 10 minutes there was a knock at our door. The manager was there saying that an alarm on one of our bikes (mine) was going off. With horror I realised I hadn't taken my alarm fob out of my pocket before throwing my shorts into the wash. It must have shorted and set off the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Lohr am Main July 30th 2023

Today we left Ascaffenburg and the Main River to travel overland to Lohr. We have a number of hills today so we need our climbing legs on, something we haven't used for at least 2 weeks. There is no warm up, we leave town and head up. It's actually a very consistent grade of about 4 to 5% but it does go on for about 3.5kms. The climb wasn't too bad and it certainly got the legs warmed up and the ride down the other side was certainly fun - but this was just the entree. With only 200m climbed we still had the big climb ahead of us. We are both using Google Maps for navigation today but mine keeps wanting to re-route no matter what I do - driving me crazy!. We decide to ... read more

After a week of relaxation in Bratislava and Graz, I felt sufficiently rested and recuperated to tackle my next multi-day hike through the mountains; and where better to do so than the Bavarian Alps? So after leaving my dear friend Kathi in Graz (where we'd had storms every day) and taking the train to Salzburg, I was up early the next day to take a 45-minute bus ride across the border to Berchtesgaden NP, nestled in the extreme southeastern corner of Germany. The plan was to do a 47km loop hike (known as the Watzmanntour) that starts and finishes at the park's most prominent lake (the Königssee) whilst first climbing - and then circling - its most prominent mountain (the Watzmann). By staying in mountain huts (and one 'Nature Friend House') along the way, I could ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria July 29th 2023

The skies looked threatening before we left Frankfurt, and with good reason. The forecast was for rain starting from around 8am and thunderstorms possible from midday through to 5pm. No time to take chances, we dressed for the weather and just as well. We left about 8:15am and had travelled less than 3kms before we were sheltering under some trees along the Main River while the rain pelted down around us. Oh dear! While the rain persisted, at least it wasn't cold. Our ride today was to Aschaffenburg (Bavaria), and a relatively short 51kms. The ride was actually very scenic and enjoyable, apart from the rain. We were riding along the river as much as behind green vegetation which hid the river from us. We also cross onto the west side of the river today. We ... read more

July 27, 2023 – Happy Birthday Kisty!!!!!! You read it correctly, it’s Kirsten’s birthday! Woo Hoo! Caroline went to the bakery across the street from our apartment, both Kirsten and Bea were leaning out the window watching. Why were they watching? I have no idea; except they were both proud aunties watching their niece fly solo. Ok, back to Kirsten’s birthday. When Caroline returned with the goodies, Bea had everything set out and we all sat down for a birthday breakfast. Breakfast was over, birthday wishes said, and the celebration was just beginning. However, it was time to get on the road. Today will be an easy road trip to Munich. We’re all packed and carrying all our suitcases to the car. We wave goodbye to our lovely apartment and off we go. We arrive in ... read more

July 26, 2023 – Top of the World We’re all sitting around the breakfast table enjoying another great German breakfast. It’s raining hard outside, I’m thinking AWESOME! Rest day, kicking back reading my book, updating the BLOG, it’s going to be a perfect rest day. As I’m taking a bite from my breakfast sandwich, Kirsten informs us were going up on the Zugspitze, I choke and spit out part of my sandwich while trying to say “I thought this was going to be a rest day” with a mouth full of food. Everyone looked at me like I was some crazed man, and in sync all say, “but it’s snowing on top of the mountain!!”. After breakfast and putting on multiple layers of clothes, we loaded ourselves into the car and off we went. On the ... read more

July 25, 2023 – Cinderella Castle It’s Tuesday morning and its raining. After breakfast we loaded the car and off, we go. Today we are heading to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On the way we plan on stopping to see the Cinderella Castel, Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the true castle that Disney’s castle was modeled after. It rained all day off and on, we arrived at the Cinderella Castle and started up the mountain. But we were rained out so we turned around and took pictures for a distance. We arrived in Garmisch and found our house Kirsten rented for us and brought all our stuff in. It’s still raining so we ducked into this Italian restaurant for dinner. Once back at the house we were all tired and wet and it was 10 pm. Yea! This was a ... read more

July 23, 2023 – Eagles Nest I wake up the morning sun light is reflecting off the mountain into our room. I feel this gentle touch nudging me. Wake up we are leaving in an hour with or without you, wow is that my loving wife speaking to me? YES! Ok, I hear you without even having my hearing aids in. WOW! talk about an alarm clock. I’m up showered and dressed in under 30 minutes. I get to the breakfast table and Caroline is just now getting up. What’s up with this? At breakfast Kirsten reviews today’s agenda. It’s as tight and regimented as yesterdays, not that I’m complaining. First, we are visiting the Eagles Nest our tickets are for 10:30 AM. NOT, 10 AM and NOT 11 AM but 10:30 AM. We are standing ... read more

July 22, 2023 – Exploring Berchtesgaden I wake up fresh and roll over, Kirsten is gone. Are you shocked she has already walked to the bakery and returned with breakfast bread. I’m thinking she might be an honorary member of the Elf community. They are still warm from the oven; I can smell them as I’m walking into the kitchen. Kirsten and Bea make us another perfect German breakfast. Bread, meats, cheeses, coffee, and cutup vegetables and most important soft-boiled eggs. A German breakfast isn’t complete without soft-boiled eggs. At breakfast, Kirsten reviews with us today’s agenda, broken down by the hour. Yea, when in Germany everything must be planned and scheduled to the last degree. Ja Vol! First, we are walking through the Klamm, WHAT’S a Klamm you ask? It’s a German gorge but BIGGER. ... read more

Bavaria Day 15 A full start to the day but warm, encountering some light showers mid morning. After a few kilometres along the valley I saw some gravel and thought the tarmac road alongside would eventually join the cycle path. I was mistaken and ended up quite a way from the planned route and ended up climbing into the hills and still encountered gravel, some if it quite loose in one ascent. It did mean that I passed several sawmills, which I have an interest in since I ran one for 25 years. A Veolia waste plant was also seen which was processing sawmill waste into compost and dealing with other smelly waste. Amazingly there were also a few vintage tractors hiding in sheds just waiting for me to pass by and photograph them. Coffee and ... read more
