Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

It was the lead up to Christmas and we were gearing up for our Switzerland trip (entry to follow), when I was asked to duck to Munich for a few days for work. So on the spur of the moment, Ange decided she would fly down to join me at the end of the work week to enjoy a weekend in Munich. We always had Munich on our destination wishlist, and this offered us to opportunities - one to go there (of course), and secondly a chance to experience the rather famous Xmas markets that Germany has to offer. So I [View Full Entry]

Moon Over Munich I stole the title of this blog from the Dead Kennedys song Moon Over Marin. It's a fairly good song, one of Bob's favorites, check out the lyrics before you check the song. This blog is written under extreme stress on my train ride to Vienna. I’ve quit taking a dump on trains. The last two times I tried to crap on the train the train has swerved mid log drop and the log hit my butt cheek, making wiping twice the process and extremely time consuming (I have Harry and the Henderson’s quantity of butt hair). Munich

Hello from Munich. So far, we have driven almost 2000 kilometres from Amsterdam through the Netherlands via Bavaria and onto Munich. Handed in the car this afternoon (Saturday) and we join the tour into Austria tomorrow morning. After leaving Rothenburg ODT, we stayed one night in Baden-Baden. Nice town, great if you have plenty of euros. All top class stuff, no $2 shops to be found, so the wallet only came out for meals! We left Baden-Baden to head for Munich, but went via Neuschwanstein Castle, in Schwangau, Bavaria. The Disney castle. One word can only describe it - especially in [View Full Entry]

(December 8th - 9th) Germany round two! Originally we weren’t planning on coming to Munich (I know I know, it seems to be a running theme now as we get towards the end of the trip, but hey, its nice to have the flexibility to go where we please). But Brian noticed something in the travel book that I had overlooked. What’s funny is that after Brian told me we were going to Munich, I remembered a photo from the very first night I met Roy. He had just returned from his European vacation, and of all the pictures he showed [View Full Entry]

We decided to take a bit of a trip today into the Bavarian Alps. After about an hour on the train, we arrived in the lovely little town of Berchtesgaden, which was absolutely covered in snow and oh-so-picturesque. It was about a 20 minute walk around to where the salt mine tours are run from. Having not really hear much about them, i wasnt sure what to expect. First you put on a stunningly attractive set of overalls. They take you down into the first level of the mines (they go down about 4 levels, and end up hundreds of metres [View Full Entry]

Guten Tag & hello! Well, we have not had internet access for a couple of days, so there is a little bit of catching up to do. Saturday, we went to the Rijkmuseum Museum in Amsterdam, which was amazing. Bought some buffalo milk blue cheese from an italian deli owner, who went to the slow food festival in Italy back in October. He was full of information. Then we took off on a 4 hour bicycle ride into the country side of north Amsterdam, where we were introduced to a gouda cheese monger who doubles as a clog maker. The ride [View Full Entry]

Leaving Amsterdam I felt on the up and up. My need for painkillers was subsiding and the thought of a real bed and a home cooked meal was all the motivation i needed to make the 7 hour train trip to my friend Maxi's appartment in Nurnburg. I met another aussy on the train, haha a seal training psychologist, which made the time pass much quicker. It's strange meeting people when travelling, you can get along so well and meet some really incredible people but there is always that ticket in your bag that says Wurzburg and theirs that says different. Christmas Wish List

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
So, I’m obviously not going to be around this year for Christmas which is always fun for me finding presents for you all whether it be something you truly need, something you really want, or something you mentioned eight months ago that I happened to jot down so I’d remember. Anyhoo, this is my Christmas Wish List for my family and friends (if you’re not on it, maybe its because I got you something already :) I hope you enjoy your presents: Mom - a market for your jewelry, I know it’s out there, we’ll find it (oh, yeah my mom [View Full Entry]

This past weekend Jason had a 3 day weekend thanks to the celebration of the Immaculate Conception in Italy. We decided to drive up to Fussen Germany for a little pre-Christmas cheer. Germany is known for its huge Christmas markets and we were excited to see a little snow in the mountains and explore the castles of Fussen. We left right after my pasta making class on Friday and drove straight through for 5 hours to Fussen. The end of the drive was actually quite scary as we drove through the curvy mountain roads of Austria in the dark and fog. [View Full Entry]
