Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Hello, We are in a village in Southern Germany near Lake Constance right now, which is on the Swiss/German/Austrian border. We went to Oktoberfest last night, so pardon any spelling or grammatical mistakes. After Austria we travelled by train up to a town in Germany called Offenburg. We had not notified anybody that we were going to be in the area, and we arrived somewhat late and were unable to contact anybody by telephone, so we were left with two choices: we could sleep in the station, where the weather is about 40 F, or we could go to the hotel. The festival grounds at Oktoberfest!
Guten Tag (hello!) So some adults may be a little disappointed in my weekend adventure to Germany, but I can't lie, it was one of the best times I've ever had! My friends and I flew to Munich, Germany over the weekend to celebrate the last weekend of Oktoberfest where I met people from practically all over the world! I could not have picked a better place to learn about culture while drinking liters of great beer! Oktoberfest is the world's largest fair and was celebrating its 175th anniversary. Basically, it's one huge fair with at least a hundred carnival rides [View Full Entry]

I never got to eat this cookie.
Well we now had a few more days in Munich, which meant another night at Oktoberfest! Sunday was the last day of Oktoberfest, so i felt obliged to dress up for the occasion. Nicky could only join us for half the day so it meant that there was a spare Lederhosen lying around with my name on it! That day i bought a hat and shirt to top off the outfit, and Kell borrowed one of Susan's traditional jackets! Nicky had some connections and got us a free lunch at a reserved table, then we hit the rides to see how [View Full Entry]

The Fenerbahce match
For my last day in Istanbul, I headed over to the Asian side via ferry. I had no idea how to get to the stadium for the Fenerbahce match, nor did I have a ticket. After stepping off the ferry I asked two guys in Fenerbahce jerseys about the whereabouts of the stadium and they took me under their wing. First, the took me to a reliable place to get a ticket at close to face value. Then we got some beers and I met a bunch of Turks who were entralled that there was an American going to see their [View Full Entry]

Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle
Inspiration of Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle
It was a perfect fall weather for hiking although the hike to Neuschwanstein was steep, not easy. After climbing the hills, the ultimate fairy-tale castle stood there welcoming our arrival. "Wow" was the word I used when I saw the castle. This is where a fantasy did come true. The romantic castle was build by King Ludwig II from 1869-1886. The construction stopped with the king's death, and it was never completed furnished. We hiked further to Marienbruke to marvel at King Ludwig's castle, just as he did hundreds of years ago. Looking at this beautiful landscape, I quickly forgot that [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Oktoberfest!
Welcome to Oktoberfest!
The entrance to the huge site
So after 2 relaxing weeks in Italy, it was back to work, which I was looking forward to from the money side of things. And at the end of my first week back, it was my birthday. The big 2 - 5. But there was no time for a quarter life crisis (and why would I need one?!) as I had drinks on Friday night to celebrate, before crawling into bed around 5am, only to wake up at 8.30am for the first of two full days at a Hapkido Skills Seminar. Needless to say, at the end of Sunday, I was [View Full Entry]

Well what can I say. It started off dazed and confused and it did not get much better, but god it was good. We arrived into Munich at 6.45am. We took our time getting off the train, as did Sarah and Eliza. During the night Laura (also Granada and Iso) got onto the train in the middle of Slovenia, somewhere with her new found friend Hayley. These two were even slower getting off the train and told by the conductor to hurry up before it left. This panic led to the fatal error on Laura’s behalf, not looking over your Cabin [View Full Entry]

So what can I say about Oktoberfest other than crazy. Seriously crazy. Molly, Daisy, John and I left for Bavaria on Thursday night taking a nine-hour bus ride from Florence to Munich. Now this bus ride could have been more interesting if was taken during the day, instead though we went through the night. Leaving at 9pm and arriving at our Hotel at around 6 am. Ashley and I purchased the room in August and assumed we would be able to cut the cost by inviting our three friends to stay with us... Probably one of the most interesting sleeping arrangements [View Full Entry]

It is kind of hard to completely recall my Munich experience since I was under the alcohol influence quite a lot. Here is a list of things we did: *Oktoberfest *Self-guided Munich historic walking tour with a lot detour to cafes *Visited Hofbrauhas at 10:00 am *Experience "The Best of Life is Wurst" ( I think this is a catchy line from an Australian commercial according to this guy we met in Munich). I definitely had more than enough sausages during my stay in Munich than previous 2 years combined. *Drink some more beer?! [View Full Entry]
