Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Prost! OKTOBERFEST!

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
What a weekend, took a night train up to Munich with my roommate and that was an experience in itself. We arrived in Munich at 8am and we beyond excited to see a Starbucks for the first time in over a month! (these are the little things you miss from America) So of course we loaded up on lattes and cream cheese bagels. We met up with some of our friends from our language class in Florence that are in Mexico and arrived in Germany a day earlier, put our bags in a train locker, brushed our teeth in the station [View Full Entry]

Prost, Prost, Prost!

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
So after getting on the bus at 8am Sunday morning, we stopped off in Munich for OKTOBERFEST! It was AMAZING! I have never been at a bigger fair, I will certainly say that. I could not believe how many people were there. All the Germans were dressed in their traditional clothes (which was wildly entertaining) and there was just food and drinks eeeverywhere! We got there and just went to get bratwurst and drink some beers in the Hofbrau tent. It was a little overwhelming at first when you walked into the tent because there were just so many people there [View Full Entry]

I hope to capture all of the exciting things and sites of my experience at the 2008 Oktoberfest in Germany. It is one of the best festivals - hands down. There is nothing like it in the States to compare, but hopefully for my family and friends reading this you will gain some additional insight. The "Oktoberfest" occurs for 16 days every year in Munich, Germany. It starts out on the third to last Saturday of the month of September and finishes on the first Sunday in October. Several years ago, the organizers moved it up to start in September for [View Full Entry]

OKTOBERFEST 2008

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
I´m going to start writing the Oktoberfest blog whenever I get a chance. SO, it started off with getting everything together Thursday morning, skipping classes for my 110 PM flight. I thought I was supposed to leave my house at 11, but apparently I misheard and was supposed to be at the airport around 11... oh well! So i took a cab for 20 euros but it was better in the long run cause I was carrying 2 carryons, a big sleeping back and a 15 pound tent. ole! Got to the airpot and waited for my flight for about an [View Full Entry]

Bier ist gut ja!

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Munich. We took a night train from Berlin to Munich and arrived at the main train station a little after six in the morning. We had our own sleeper cabin with a shower and toilet, but the rocking and swaying of the train wasn’t much comfort and we ended up with very little sleep again. The night before we were graced with the presence of one stringy, hairy Italian man named Roberto during our last night in Berlin, who had two distinct characteristics - the first being that he would casually drop down to his under dacks or birthday suit in [View Full Entry]

A few days in Munich

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Munich was great. As soon as I stepped off the plane and felt the fall air that I’m so accustomed to in mid-September, I was smiling pretty much non-stop. I was only there for a weekend. It might sound crazy that I would fly to Germany just for two and a half days, but honestly, I don’t know if I would have stayed sane if I didn’t have that weekend away. September was a rough month getting adjusted here, and going to a place where I understood people and where I was more familiar with was much-needed. There were two people [View Full Entry]

Well Into Germany

 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Würzburg
Sunday, October 05, 2008 We have had only spotty internet access because of all the low bridges we have to go under. They have to clear the top deck of everything and lower all the antennas. Since the internet connection to the ship is wireless, we have no connection when the antennas are down. This will go out sometime. The ship is very comfortable and brand new. It entered service April of this year. Almost all cabins have large sliding glass doors that let in lots of air and frame the passing countryside. Forward are the lounge on the top deck [View Full Entry]
