Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

European Odyssey Day 3 Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg
Day 3, and once again we sleep until noon, and even then it was hard to get up! Groggy as we were, we pulled ourselves out of bed. Timmo and Judith volunteered to take Carter and Camille to a water park, while Renee and I went exploring in Nürnberg! Wow, the kids were thrilled and Renee and I got to pretend it was our Honeymoon again! Janni had to go back to school, so Timmo dropped Renee, Janni and I off at the Erlangen train station (Hauptbahnhof). Janni taught us how to negotiate the ticket machine, and, most importantly when to [View Full Entry]

Well, I'd like to say that after we went to bed we all slept peacefully until the next morning.... but that's no where near true. At one point I was up with Camille watching TV at,... oh let's say 4 in the morning. I eventually fell asleep on the couch with her, but she was still wide awake. Once it got light outside and Camille could see it was snowing, that was another big round of surprise and excitement. Well, we all did finally fall asleep by probably 7am local time. At noon Timmo's brother, Janni, arrived and gently woke us [View Full Entry]

When last I typed, we were attempting to rally ourselves into going to the Erlangen Christ Kindl Markt. A Christ Kindl Markt is a Christmas Market. At this time of the year nearly every city in Germany has a Christmas Market. The one in Erlangen is fairly small, and even that one had a children's merry-go-round, two vendors selling Gluehwein and hot chocolate and maybe 30 vendors selling handmade goods, candy, toys, Christmas Pyramids, etc., etc. And what, you may ask is Gluehwein? The translation is literally "hot wine", but it's really a hot mulled wine: sweet, tasty and alcohol-ly! And, [View Full Entry]

We've survived the trip out. Step one accomplished. Renee and I just stayed up all night on Sunday night, packing away. At 4am we woke the kids up and Jacquelyn drove us up to LAX. We arrived by 6am and so we were right on schedule, since our flight was set for a 8:10am departure. We made it through check-in, security, and a quick burger king breakfast. Renee had time to chat with a nice pregnant woman on her way from Hawaii to somewhere in Texas. The plane was a little late, but we made it to Dallas, rode the Skyway [View Full Entry]

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is totally over the top about Christmas - but that makes it a great place to visit at Christmas time. I kind of imagine the locals must be something like the Who's in Whoville (from How The Grinch That Stole Christmas) who must plan for Christmas all year. When we visited Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road in September, on a whim we drove home via Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It was so beautiful (a medieval walled city, almost 1000 years old) but being 5pm on a Sunday afternoon, [View Full Entry]

Well, it's been a while since I had time to sit down and write another blog entry, and 4 weeks have passed since my 21st. So instead of the usual in depth rambling of what I've been up to, I've decided to make this one a comparison of student life in Germany and student life in the UK. After 6 weeks of being here, I've experienced a fair amount and after a nice trip back to York last weekend, it's made me think a lot about the differences between the two. Lectures (Vorlesungen) It's been 4 weeks since the official start [View Full Entry]

Beer and Lederhosen Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Lederhosen. Weiner sausages. Oompah Bands. Welcome to Deutschland! Let’s start at the beginning: Elyse and I caught our first night train from Venice to Munich on Thursday night. We had our own beds, which were super comfortable as opposed to having to sit in a stiff seat for 7 hours! We arrived bright and early in Germany, where we met Samantha and grabbed some Starbucks (any European that has a Starbucks is automatically one of my favorites!) We headed out to explore the city…too bad the city didn’t open until practically 10! So we spent some time wandering around unti [View Full Entry]

Munich! Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich
Munchen New Munich Walking Tour Our guide for the tour wasn't phenomenal, but she did show us the sights of Munich. We started at Marienplatz and watched the much over-rated Glockenspiel. We saw some pretty churches and our guide told us an interesting legend about the devil stomping his foot in one of them. We also saw the New Synagogue, the old and new town halls and the royal residences. Finally, we stopped by Hofbrauhaus, a large brewery with a beer garden, but we didn't get a chance to grab some food or drinks. Don't worry, I made it back there [View Full Entry]
