Woke at 10 am beacause we had to check out and felt really terrible. Even though I had not drank much the night before, I will still really hung over and tired. Aaron and everyone else seemed similar but a bit better. We stored our luggage away at the hostel and hopped on a short city s-train to Dachau. The weather was cold and rainy which added a bit to the gloomy aspect of dachau and made me feel worse at the same time. We walked through the musuem first and saw a video which was quite shocking and disturbing to watch. It portrayed quite a few piles of dead bodies and showed how incredibly starved the people were during their imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp. The cremation and gas chamber building had an ... read more

Geo: 48.2549, 11.4409This morning Jen and I went on a guided tour to Dachau Concentration Camp. It is located in Dachau, about 20 mins north-west of Munich. This was the first major concentration camp established by the Nazis. It was a blueprint for the many future camps to come throughout Europe. Hundreds of thousands of people passed through the gates titled 'Freedom through Work', originating from over 34 different nations. It was very interesting. There was a building full of photos taken during the life of the camp, very real and shocking. This visit today was so much easier, as we had both been to Auschwitz- which was very depressing compared to Dachau. Our tour lasted for about 2 hours and was very informative. We then caught the train back to Munich in search of a ... read more

Hello my stateside friends! Seems like it's been awhile since I updated, but not too much has been happening around Baumholder. I've been working a lot. Thankfully staying in my preschool classroom, but things have been crazy since they stole one of our excellent staff members to put in the other preschool room. So it's been the lead teacher and I, and that is just not enough staff to last a full day in preschool! Needless to say it's been stressful for the staff and the kids, and they have been showing it by being crazy! They have also started to test my limits more, as I am now the only other in the room now. tricky kids. Hopefully they will be hiring more staff soon, but it's cys, so we'll see. Thankfully the weather has ... read more

Munich, home of beer, sausages and strudel! What a fun and truly raucous place to be (one can only imagine how out of control things get during Oktoberfest!) We have made every effort to make the most of what feels like 2 very short nights in this Bravarian city. There have been two main highlights of our time here. The first has been our visit to the very rowdy, very raucous ´Hofbrauhaus´ one of the largest beer gardens in Munich. The place was absolutely jampacked with travellers and locals alike, all drinking huge 1L beer jugs and soaking up the jovial atmosphere created by the Bravarian band playing along in the background. Waitstaff are all in traditional dress, right down to the girls who come around selling absolutely enormous pretzels! We sampled some local beer and ... read more

Traveling to Munich through Dachau: The Shadow of Tragedy Cold Day, Warm Car Since last night was an early one to home and bed, we were up bright and early to eat our (free, yay!) breakfast and get on the road. Mike’s new addiction is bread with butter and honey on it, while I’m all about the yogurt with muesli - German granola. I think it’s great . . . Mike grumbles at the loud crunchiness of it (for all that know him well, this makes sense) so early in the morning. Over the last couple of days, it has been getting consistently colder and colder. We’ve been gifted with some great clear, blue sky days, but those days are also the coldest ones. We jumped straight into the car after breakfast and headed out of ... read more

Today was an interesting day. Everyone pulled up suprisingly well and made it to the bus on time to head off to Austria. On our way we made an unplanned stop at Dachau concentration camp. Although it was very sad it was very interesting and everyone was happy that we went there. It was crazy to be actually standing on the same ground as the prisoners that had been captured by the Nazi's, and really not that long ago. This camp was made for around 6,000 people but ended up holding 30,000 people. Afterwards we continued into Austria and before arriving at Hopfgarten we stopped for our hangover cure. Dachau, about 15km outside of Munich was the site of the first Nazi concentration camp, and they have a memorial museum which is both fascinating and horrific at the same time. The Nazi's built this when they came to power in 1933 and this became the model for all the other camps that followed. The museum is excellent but leaves you feeling very sombre, bewildered and outraged that mankind could be so cruel. I actually visted here about 17 years ago on my first trip through Europe and it was always one place that stood out in my memory. Today the museum exhibition site is bigger and more comprehensive. The sign on the gate says 'work sets you free' when in reality thousands were physically worked to death. For many death would have been a better ... read more

Well, I said I wouldn´t be posting again until London, but since I have free internet in our hotel here, I decided I should probablz take advantage of it!! Most of this post is just going to be pictures from todaz. We began with heading out to Dachau concentration camp. We thought we´d be there about 2 hours, and ended up being there for over 3! It was incredible just walking around there and going through the museum. I mean, I have studied all of that information for zears in school, but seeing all of it while being at the actual place it happened was a...humbling experience. We didn´t take manz pictures there, because it wasn´t exactlz the picture taking sort of place. However, I did attach 2... Next we took the subwaz to Marinplatz. (I ... read more
