It is very snowy and cold here in Munich. I arrived yesterday around noon, armed with good advice from the very kind lady who sat in my compartment on the train ride from Innsbruck. My hotel was pretty easy to find from the train station, and thankfully very clean and warm. After checking in I headed out to find an internet cafe to see about accommodation for my next destination, but was not able to confirm anything. All was not lost however, since I found my way to the Marienplatz where I decided to secure my tour to Dachau for the following day, in advance. Dachau was the reason for my return to Munich. This morning arrived, cold and very very snowy. I headed to the meeting place for my Dachau visit to discover that I ... read more

Hello Everyone, Yesterday I visited the Memorial at Dachau that is at the site of the former concentration camp. Dachau is infamous for being, not only the first concentration camp, but also the training grounds for the SS. The SS were Hitler's elite police/army who were in charge of the concentration camps all through out Germany and its territories. The SS training was for boys 16-19. It was basically training in torture. All of the future concentration camps used Dachau as a guide and the rules and regulations used in all the camps were drawn up there. Dachau was the only concentration camp open for all 12 years of the Third Reich, 1933-1945. Today I took a tour about the rise of the Third Reich in Munich. I learned a lot of things I never knew ... read more

(I split today into two entries since I couldn't exactly link the two parts of my day) I woke up this morning to a very cloudy sky - how fitting it rain the day I go to Dachau. On the S-bahn ride to Dachau I met a girl, Sophia, traveling by herself - she’s from Taiwan, studying in Boston, doing an internship in Bohn, Germany. How epic. We talked pretty much the entire way there and made supper plans for afterwards, as it does get tiresome eating by yourself all the time. (My next entry, or previous depending how they're posted) Dachau is remarkably close to a fair sized city, and the camp itself is gigantic. Literally as soon as the bus pulled up to the camp it started to absolutely POUR rain. We ran to ... read more

Hello again everyone! Sorry it's been a couple of days since the last post-school is getting crazy! Dad and George both had meetings to go to this morning, so I slept in for an extra hour or so, had a lazy breakfast, and decided to explore the small town of Sindelfingen a bit. I walked for around 20 minutes or so to get to the town center-it is so picturesque! There are cobblestone streets everywhere, perfect cottages lined up in a row, I can feel the crunch of snow under my boots as I walk, the wind is brisk and cold but not biting, and the sun is out. How much better can it get?! There was a small farmer's market set up in the town square, so I explored the colorful overflowing bins until I ... read more

December 30, 2008 We made it! The end of our vacation. And the first time I've actually blogged all the way through a vacation! Usually I get too tired and give up in favor of sleep. But the night is still young, I have instant latte macchiato in my cup, watching a German M-TV-ish music countdown on television (and wishing I could stab my ears because Phil Collins is currently singing - oh good, that stopped; even Mariah Carey is an improvement), and the bells from the church across the street are ringing like the Second Coming is nigh. So, no sleep right now and I can finish blogging about our trip. Today we bought a transportation ticket so that we could take the S-bahn, U-bahn, trams, and buses around. A partner ticket for all zones ... read more

Tuesday 30th September Dachau Concentration Camp We arrived at the camp early and there were so many people and so many tour buses. Also surprising were the amount of Germany high school students. We hired some audio guide and started to walk around. There was a big museum like set up, with heaps of exhibits to read. The exhibits were set up in original rooms, so while you read and listened to the guide, you were also given the history of the room. After lunch which we had in the motor home, my Dad and I chose to do an English speaking tour which lasted about 2hours while Kurt who was feeling worse slept and rested in the motorhome. We found out some really interesting fact…. Dachue was a prison for German prisoners first!! Some of ... read more

Today was definitely an emotional day. We left Munich in the morning and headed towards Saltzburg, Austria and on the way we stopped at Dachau. Dachau was the first concentration camp set up by the Nazis, and it was a model for all of the other concentration camps, and it was also the last one to be liberated by the Allies. I really can't say much about it because I wouldn't be able to put into words the atrocities that occurred there. On a happier note, we traveled from Germany to Austria today. The ride was beautiful; about 2 hours in, we could see the Alps all around us. While Munich was a great city, it isn't in my top 5 or so favorite cities, but Saltzburg certainly is! It reminds me so much of Caen, ... read more

Today we visited the Dachau Concentration camp remains from world war two. It was very interesting and very sobering. Some 200,000 people died in Dachau from 1933-1945. There are now a number of memorial buildings and sculptures on the site of the camp set amongst the remaining buildings, which include barracks, SS buildings, cell block, gas chambers and crematorium. It’s unbelievable what the prisoners were put through in the camp and that mankind can be so cruel to his fellow human race. We ended up spending the whole day at the camp going around the different sites and looking through the museum there. We also had an audio tour device that played back information about different locations and which also contained stories from some of the few surviving prisoners about what life was like in the ... read more

I think pretty much everyone, including our tour guide, thought I was insane for bringing an 8-year-old to the KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau (Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial). Sure, all German schoolkids are required to visit a concentration camp, but that's 12- and 14-year-olds. Not 8. By the end of our tour, our guide had no doubt why I figured LG could handle it. Throughout the tour, I was happy to let LG wander off, or zone out; I certainly didn't force her to listen attentively to the catalogue of atrocities committed at Dachau. Inside the museum, we breezed quickly past the most graphic photos. We got to take a welcome one-hour break while the rest of our tour viewed a film recommended for ages 12 and up only. I've seen it, and LG certainly didn't need to. We ... read more

One Day: When we arrived at the train station, we went to our couchsurfing.com host's (Norbs) house, and he was not at home. When we called him he told us he had the dates mixed up for our arrival. He told us he would be home in the afternoon and we can come back then. Lucky for us, the train station had locker where we could store our stuff. We decided to just go back to the station, store our bags and head to Dachau to go to the work camp and catch up with Norbs when we got back. We left all our stuff, except what we would need for the night, in a locker (5 Euro) and set out for Dachau. While we were putting our stuff in the locker, a huge group of ... read more
