Monday 13th October JOSHUA’S BIRTHDAY Slovakia - Hungry Finally Joshua’s 9th Birthday arrived!!! (Thank god b/c that’s all we heard about for weeks before!) He jumped on our bed very early and received his birthday kisses and hugs over and over and over again….. We hoped to be close to a McDonald and have a McDonald’s breakfast for his birthday but we weren’t, so the poor kid got Bombay Toast. Bombay Toast is like French toast but it’s sweet instead of savoury. So we ate it with ice cream and jam instead of cheese and olives. After lunch we headed off to Budapest and did a big shop at one of the biggest supermarket we’d seen up to that point. It was like the biggest Coles and Big W mixed together. We had to change the ... read more
Sun 12th Oct Vienna - Slovakia - Hungry Sunday was a mad driving day because we went through 3 countries!!! In the morning, exhausted from lack of sleep we left Vienna and headed to the capital city of Slovakia - Bratislava. It turned out to the biggest surprise. The outer suburbs’ were exactly what I’d imagine, slightly dirty and run down but the city centre was a lovely surprise. The architecture was so similar to that of Vienna but on a smaller scale and less touristy. While saying that, there were heaps of tourists!! Bratislava had lots of little street and cute restaurants but we were surprised at how expensive it was. There were quirky bronze statues casually placed around the town. We found The Watcher, the Frenchmen and the Photographer. Each were found somewhere around ... read more
Sat 11th October Werfen - Vienna It was a 4-5 hours drive into Vienna and therefore we arrived in the afternoon and had intentions of visiting a huge market that was on everyday but extra special on Saturdays!! So after a bit of driving around to find a suitable and safe car par for the motorhome, we parked it and headed into the town. (We did see some parking but it cost $10 an hour and we intended to stay and see Vienna by night! There was no max fee and therefore we weren’t going to pay for approx 8-9 hours of parking.) So we parked slightly further out and decided to walk. What was a bit of walking? We’d only walked heaps the day before and god knows we were eager for more!! When ... read more
Thursday 9th October Austria - Salzberg We drove early to Salzberg and decided to book ourselves into a caravan park and then have breakfast because everyone takes a long time to get up, have breakfast and get put!! So it takes a long time to finally arrive at a new spot. Well, it’s very hard to get out bed when it’s fresh outside and the kids have jumped into our bed, snuggled up between us and the doona is perfectly heated….. Some days the idea of getting up and getting out does not appeal at all. Off we drove into to Salzberg’s cute little streets, we followed the GPS and it led us to a suburb where we started seeing tourist signs for the caravan park. I’m a firm believer that if we have the ... read more
Sat 4th October Austria - Innsbruck The best thing about this day was hearing the kids gasp and yell whenever they saw a snow capped mountain. They were thrilled and astounded. Even the low level cloud that hung around for a long time was beautiful. One our way to the caravan park 5 km outside of Innsbruck, we noticed that all the homes have their wood so neatly chopped that we’re all convinced that’s how they buy it!!! Even the sheds for their wood is cute and neat that Kurt’s going to fire his wood chopper…. As we drove we listening to the Italian music that Kurt had downloaded in Sicily. God, it was a great day. At the moment all of us except my Mum have the sniffles, but I expect that to change soon. ... read more
Tuesday 6th October Germany-Berchtesgaden- Eagles nest On Tuesday, after we’d been to the information centre we decided to drive to the tiny town of Obersalzberg 3km out of Berchtesgaden, to visit the place when the Nazis had their southern headquarters. Hitler fell in love with the town and slowly he and his henchmen took over and made it their holiday location. There was a Document Museum which was incredibly cheap at 3E (and 2E for an audio guide). When we first saw the museum we thought it would take us all of 15 minutes and we’d be out. But we were there for hours!!! Everything was written in German and therefore the audio guide was a necessity. The amount of letter, documents, advertisement, photos and video was astounding. Everything about Hitler and the Nazi part were ... read more
Friday 3rd October With damp jeans hung up all over the beds and hung up in the shower, we set off for King Ludwig II’s most famous and photographed castle Schloss Neuschwanstein. It was raining when we left the camping ground and it was still raining when we arrived at the gorgeous town of Fussen and boy was it packed with tourist!! When I asked about the million tourists, the lady smiled and informed me that we’d come to the castle on the wrong day. Friday was a public holiday and therefore all the Germans were having a long weekend and visiting the castle with us!! Damn!! The rain hadn’t stopped falling so we ventured out with all our wet wear gear including colourful water ponchos for the kids. When my parents and kids stood close ... read more
Wednesday 1st October Germany We started out day with breakfast in the motor home while tour buses pulled up with loads of tourist. Those poor people were having breakfast standing up in the cold battling the wind and trying to eat all the same. We tried really hard not to look smug while we had our warm coffee and toast inside!!!! We were driving to a place called Oberstdorf from where we hoped to catch public transport to Schloss Neuschwanstein , the fairy tale castle used by Walt Disney. The country side was spectacular and the drive to the caravan park was one of the best parts of the day. The remainder of the day was lazy and once we got settle into the park, we walked 2km to the closest little town Salzberg. It was ... read more
Tuesday 30th September Dachau Concentration Camp We arrived at the camp early and there were so many people and so many tour buses. Also surprising were the amount of Germany high school students. We hired some audio guide and started to walk around. There was a big museum like set up, with heaps of exhibits to read. The exhibits were set up in original rooms, so while you read and listened to the guide, you were also given the history of the room. After lunch which we had in the motor home, my Dad and I chose to do an English speaking tour which lasted about 2hours while Kurt who was feeling worse slept and rested in the motorhome. We found out some really interesting fact…. Dachue was a prison for German prisoners first!! Some of ... read more
Thursday 25th September Lina - Ulm - Munich On Thursday morning we packed up the motor home with ALL our gear, including the oil and bread Lina gave us. We threw the doonas, pillows, sheets and the vegetables we’d bought the night before. 1kg of carrots, wine, water, beer and 10kgs of cabbage!!! Lina had lived in Germany for 26 years and in all that time had NEVER used cabbage!!! We love cabbage and use it heaps…besides 10 kg was only 3 head of cabbage. Cristofolo’s work was open and we went in and saw aluminium being melted and then poured into moulds. When you walked in there was a fine layer of sand everywhere because sand was used to surround the aluminium moulds. (they gave us a cute pair of figurines as genuine one of ... read more
