My name is Katie, I'm 22 years old and heading into my final semester of college. I'm a double major in French and International Studies with a minor in Political Science. I could have graduated last spring, but I decided to go abroad through my school's International Programs department a second time. The first time I spent a semester in Caen, Normandy, France. This semester I'm going to London, but instead of studying abroad, I'm doing an internship. I got placed with two Members of Parliament who happen to be husband and wife, Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls. MPs are similar to Congressmen, so I'm very excited to have such an amazing opportunity ahead of me.

While in France I had the opportunity to travel to Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, the Canary Islands and Italy. This upcoming semester the group I'm going with from my college is going on a 2 week continental tour to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and finally England. I am very, very excited to explore new countries, yet just as excited to visit some countries for the second or third time. While living in Europe, I hope to visit Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Traveling is definitely my #1 passion, and I hope to continue on to every single continent within my lifetime. My career goal is to join the foreign service, so I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities ahead of me.

My second European adventure begins 13 days from today! I depart from Chicago O'Hare on September 3rd on Air India and land in Munich, Germany where my journey will begin. I'll try to update this every day. At the very least I'll write everyday and save it to my computer to post at a later time if I do not have internet access. I hope you enjoy following my travels. =)

I don't think I'll ever get sick of this conversation, one I've had with many people all across Europe: European: "So where are you from?" Me: "America." European: "Where in America? New York? Florida?" (Interchange with California once in a while.) Me: "No, Wisconsin." *blank stare* Me: "It's right in between Chicago and Canada." European: "Ohhhh! Okay!" I just love that I'm messing up their sense of US geography by comparing a state to a country and a city... Anyyyways, I'm back in London after a thoroughly amazing "holiday" (as the Europeans call it) in Malta. I'm sad to re [View Full Entry]

Hey faithful readers! It's your unfaithful blogger here. Sorry... I've been busy, although I know that's not an excuse! Really, I don't think I'm cut out for this whole blogging thing. I'll give it a go again. Although it's not an excuse, it's the truth. I have been SOOO busy! I really don't get more than 4-5 hours of sleep a night, because I'm always out late doing something, then up early for either work or class. I've been going to the theater a lot. I've seen Spamalot, Avenue Q., Chicago, Wicked, and various other smaller performances. I love love love [View Full Entry]

Ahhh I'm having a great day at work! My nerves are about 75% of the way gone now, so I'm getting more comfortable. For the last 3.5 hours I've been trying to figure out Microsoft Publisher, a program that lets you create things such as newsletters. It is 10x better then PowerPoint, so I'm having a really good time with it. I've been updating a newsletter for the pensioners in Yvette's constituency and I think I've finally got the program down. I'm doing all kinds of research to update benefit information and such, so I finally feel like I'm doing something [View Full Entry]

Apparently there is no way to respond to any of the messages that I get through this website. So, I would like to write a collective thank you to all of my family members for their messages, which I thoroughly enjoyed. They definitely made me feel a little less homesick. =) Yesterday was a very productive day for me. I haven't felt the need to rush out and see every famous site in London as quickly as possible, because I didn't have to; I'm here long term instead of for a week, so I can take my time. However, I started [View Full Entry]

Hey all. Again, it's been a long time since my last entry, but I have been so busy! I hardly even have time to do all of the homework I have. Not only do I have two pretty intense classes at ISH, I also have to do a paper and a photography project for the tour of Europe we went on, a paper and a log for my independent study class, and a huge paper and log for the political science department. All of this on top of working 25 hours a week, site-seeing in London and traveling. Argh. Oh well, [View Full Entry]

Hey all. I'm on my lunch break at work right now. I'm allowed to go to whatever site I want to while at work, so I decided to update my blog. It hasn't been a very exciting day, but nevertheless, I'm excited to just be here. I have some links to pictures, for anyone who doesn't have Facebook and can't see my albums. Sorry it has taken me so long to update my blog. As I'm sure you can imagine, I've been very busy. Although I must admit, at times when I could have been writing in my blog, or reading a book, I've been at the ISH bar, and I'm pretty disappointed in myself. I'm not at all a social person, and for the first time in a very long time, I'm surrounded by people that I genuinely want to socialize with. However, this has led me to the conclusion that sitting in a bar 14 out of the 15 nights we've been [View Full Entry]

Well, things with Kenny didn't work out so well. He is really into me and wants me to be his girlfriend, but I just don't think we have anything in common at all. He likes beer, football, and "being lazy" and hates reading and museums. Noooo thank you. We went on like a 10 hour date the other day, and I really did have a good time... I'm just not interested in him. It's crazy that I've been single and looking in the States for 3+ years, yet within a week here someone already wants me to be their girlfriend! Ahh! I met a boy! His name is Kenny and I met him at the ISH bar. It's kind of weird, because the ISH bar is always full of people from lots and lots of different countries, but I met a truly authentic British boy, along with his friends. Tonight Kenny and I hung out at ISH and then went to a club in central London, where we lost everyone else. He walked me home, gave me a proper goodbye, and not only promised to call me to make sure I made it home alright (it was only like 50 feet away) [View Full Entry]

Ello! I am having a great time in good old London; I know this semester is going to fly by way too fast. I don't have much time to write, so I'll just recap a few things. Not only is the British accent awesome, but I love the things they say! Pretty much everyone calls me love. "You're welcome, love", "No, love", "yes, love", "you're going the wrong way, love", "would you like a newspaper, love", "not a problem, love". They add it to the end of like every sentence, it's awesome! The past few days I have basically been organizing [View Full Entry]
