For a nice relaxing weekend I went with my friend Ally back to Heidelberg to show her around and then we went to Strasbourg, France just over the border to where she studied abroad. We had a fantastic time together and it was great having each other as our own private tour guide and interpreter. We were able to see everything in each place and it was nice to go back and somewhere new (they're about two hours apart). Heidelberg is still fantastic and one of the loves of my life. It's become a bit more commercialized, with two Starbucks, since I've been there, but is still amazing and brought back great memories. It was also beautiful in Strasbourg and gave me a new appreciation for France. I also got to see the European Parliament, which ... read more

Heidelberg 18/05/09-21/05/09 Every place has a history, but in Heidelberg you can really see and feel it. Walking the cobblestones of the longest pedestrian walkway in Europe, you look up and see grotesque gargoyles and graceful maidens adorning doorways and windows. On the hour, a cacophony of bells sounds across the city from centuries-old churches. Cycling past you on all sides are students attending the oldest university in Germany. On one hill stands a castle bearing evidence of successive ages, on another lies the site of Celtic, then Roman, then early Christian and finally Nazi structures. It’s all walkable and accessable and cute. Exploring the well-preserved buildings down narrow alleys can keep you entertained for hours. But Heidelberg is by no means stuck in the past. It has huge shops and trendy boutiques and cafes to ... read more

Welcome to our second day in Germany! We woke up around 9 and headed down for a (FREE!) continental breakfast at the hotel lobby. I got what would soon become my regular morning meal: a croissant with Noutella and a few cold cuts. Yum! It was Sunday, so a lot of the town was closed, but the castle was open. We got a taxi up to the top of the hill and there it was. The ruins are so vast and picturesque! We wandered around the outer courtyard for a little while-the facade is still pretty much intact, and there are statues all up and down the walls of famous rulers, Roman gods, and Christian values (an interesting assortment, I agree). Then we met up with another family from Canada to take the guided tour through ... read more

I am a student again! It was like a horrible dream to wake up to an alarm and realize that I was waking up for school. Luckily, I am not doing it for a diploma. I am taking a German class. It is intensive and a review for me but it is like physical therapy for my grammar. It is nice to not be totally lost and understand every word the teacher says. It is even nicer that I can apply it everyday. By the way, my camera is fixed. So enjoy continual updates and keep in touch!... read more

It was a bit of "culture shock "when I arrived at Heidelberg. Baden-Baden was elegant and clean. Heidelberg was chaotic, not so elegant and not so clean. Nevertheless, it definitely has its charm and beauty that attract so many visitors yearly. Heidelberg Schloss, landmark of Heidelberg, sits on a hill overlooking the Neckar river. I was fascinated by this majestic ruin and its eventful history. I will just let mark Twain describe its beauty. A ruin must be rightly situated, to be effective. This one could not have been better placed. It stands upon a commanding elevation, it is buried in green woods, there is no level ground about it, but, on the contrary, there are wooded terraces upon terraces, and one looks down through shining leaves into profound chasms and abysses where twilight reigns and ... read more

Today we finally arrived in Heidelberg to a nice camping spot near the Rhine. We drove down the Rhine from our previous camping ground and stopped at a town called Rodesheim. Along the way we saw some really nice scenery and heaps of castles - it seems there was a castle for every village. We stopped at Rodesheim as it looked like a nice town. We went to a castle there which had been converted into a wine museum. We took the audio tour and it was fascinating. They had all sorts of equipment for the making of wine, right back to the Roman empires reign. They had heaps of different wine glasses and goblets dating right back to 5000 years ago. It seems that people did a lot of drinking games even centuries ago - ... read more

We had an excellent day from start to finish in Heidelberg, starting with a funicular train ride up the hill to Heidelberg castle and a stroll along the grounds. The castle is crumbling a little, but it was still a sight, and the view from the courtyard was nice, Heidelberg is so quaint and peaceful. After the rather steep decent back to town me and Laura were feeling hungry, and the craving for a wurst hit, so we embarked on the hunt. It was disturbingly difficult to find a brat in Heidelberg, and I decided I should set up shop with a cart for a while. We found a place in the guide book to placate our cravings, and I tried some 12% beer. On an empty stomach it gave me a decent buzz. More sight ... read more

After weeks of solo travel I finally have my travel companion as my sister arrived this morning. Her flight was delayed two hours for weather, so I had a nice morning sitting in the airport, reading, and anxiously waiting to see not only a familiar face but a deeply loved family member I don't get to see nearly enough of. Now I am sitting in the bar area of the small hostel in Heidelberg after training from Frankfurt and walking around the town, trying to keep Laura awake to ease the jet lag that is sure to set in eventually. Her presence has already payed dividends as Laura found a delicious (and cheap!) indian restaurant where we sampled tandori masala (chicken stewy stuff over rice) and samosa (fried triangle appetizer things) and mango lasi (basically a ... read more
