First week of Work Wow. I have had the most amazingly intense week ever. It all started on Monday the 14th of January at 10am. All the new staff had our first day of work, and I also was ment to be moving in. Unfortunately though, work hadn't been progressing on the site as had been hoped and I wasn't able to move in. More of that later. So the day started with us early birds going for a coffee whilst we waited for everyone to arrive. Then into the restaurant for a welcome speech and a video and powerpoint presentation on the hostel, its background, who they are and so on and so forth. Half of us are 'english' and the other half french. This is pretty much denoted by our first language as ... read more

Hei! Aurinko paistoi koko päivän lämpimästi ja taisimmepa saada hieman väriä ... read more

hi guys, everything is going really well. classes have started, and i have a great schedule. the seminar on the french education that was originally cancelled because the professor was unavailable is now being offered, and i'll be taking that course instead of attending a course at the university of paris, because this seminar includes trips to french schools in the suburbs to teach english. i personally feel that i will have a much better experience doing that than attending a course at the Sorbonne, and this education seminar will be much more condusive to my thesis proposal of muslim integration in france through the education system. i had a meeting with the director of my program yesterday to discuss all this, and she was very impressed with my interest in this subject and has offered ... read more

First week of actual classes here in Paris, and even then it's still a sort of trial week. We basically attend the classes we are interested in taking, and by the end of the week we should have a more definite schedule. Kevin arrived in Paris on Saturday, but not without having his flight from London-Heathrow cancelled and then his new flight to Paris being delayed almost 3 hours. Sitting around in Charles de Gaulle airport for 3 hours and contemplating whether or not I'm really desperate enough to buy an apple for 1.10 euro (about $1.50) = a very frustrated Flad. But he finally arrived, and brought me my skis. By now, I've pretty much mastered the metro and received numerous compliments on my french speaking. Flight attendants at CDG were praising me, and my ... read more

So the subject of this blog is twofold, but in general concerned with this weekend's festivities. First, on Friday night the host family of one of my groupmates, Mary-Clare, invited a few of us over for a crepe party. We had ham and cheese crepes for dinner and then for dessert, I kid you not, we each put away 12 dessert crepes. Crepes with jam, nutella, peanut butter, sugar, lemon, it was crazy but delish. We even got to help make the crepes! (See pictures for a view of the festivities). It was really nice to meet another French family. They were very curious about us and what we were studying, and as usual, we discussed the differences between France and America. Its a very common topic for obvious reasons. Then, on Sunday, we conquered the ... read more

Seven months ago, during the midst of our travels, we were writing about the amazing conditions we had whilst snowboarding in Valle Nevado, Chile. It was such a fabulous change from the holiday we'd taken to Flaine in Jan 2007 where'd we experienced record high temperatures (sitting outside your chalet in t-shirts at 2000m in the Alps in Jan!) and record low snow cover. So, this year was a real gamble - we'd booked another holiday to the French Alps in January, most people thought we were crazy, but wow, did the gamble pay off. We have just returned from the best snowboarding holiday we've ever had in the French Alps. The conditions in La Plagne were second only to our Chile trip. It snowed for two days before we arrived, so our first day on ... read more

Where did January go ? Never a dull moment in Chamonix, be Easter before we know it. After all the partying over Christmas and New Year, we're now settled into the regular apres scene at the Chambre 9 and our fish & chip Fridays and Sunday roasts at the Monkey bar. When my estate agent rang one night at 6pm, he thought I was at a rock festival! Last Friday had fish & chips (with proper mushy peas) and early night as I was working at the airport on Saturday. Snow caused chaos, we had to hold all the flights as the coaches were stuck on the mountain, finally when the day was almost over, an airport driver managed to crash some stairs into a plane wing, all the passengers had to get off and wait ... read more

It rained all last week, so when it was sunny this weekend, we took advantage of it! On Saturday, I wandered around Bordeaux on my own, just enjoying the weather and trying to see more of the city. I saw a guy peeing on a building and yelling obsenities in French, which was quite creepy! Saturday night, we went to the Brazilian's apartment and hung out for the night. I was able to meet a few new people, which is always fun! I met another guy from Canada who wants to watch the Super Bowl, so we're hopefully going to have a good-sized group in the bar on February 3rd! On Sunday we took a trip to Arcachon, a town on the Atlantic Ocean. It was absolutely gorgeous! I took off my sandals, rolled up my ... read more
