Our first week is now over. I am getting more accustomed to the city and have learned some key rules, such as not to go shopping on Saturday, when the entire city of Paris floods the streets. It was a miserable experience. The big semiannual sales are going on right now, so it is tempting to buy new things. But I haven’t even worn all of the clothes I brought yet! Classes at Paris-VII start tomorrow—yikes! I am pretty nervous. I also have an appointment with someone in the UMP tomorrow to see if I want to have an internship with them (the UMP is Sarkozy’s party, and has a majority in their legislative assemblies). That will also be nerve-racking. Last night our program took us to see a ballet at Theatre National de Chaillot—it was ... read more

(Or the story of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte) Once there was a little boy born in Pau to parents of humble origins. They rented the second floor of a house near the Chateau for 9 years. Jean-Baptiste, as he was named, joined the Royal Marine in 1780 when his father died and left him broke. During the French Revolution, he became general of a brigade and in 1797 the Directory put him in charge of the Italian campaign, under the direction of one Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1798 he becomes the ambassador to Vienna, then comes back to Paris where he ends up marrying Desiree Clary, Napoleon’s ex-fiancée. Thanks to cronyism in Napoleon’s empire, Jean-Baptiste becomes Prince de Ponte-Corvo in 1806. He’s lenient with some Swedish prisoners at Lubeck, and so in 1810 the decide they like him enough ... read more

Highlights of Paris A few weeks ago mum and dad told us that we are going to Paris over a weekend. Mum and dad sometimes travel to foreign countries for only two days, Saturday and Sunday. They say that a weekend is all the time they can take off from work. We think that is a pity because we want to travel much longer. We think our jobs must be much better than their jobs. Our job is keeping this blog updated and entertain our friends when they come for a visit. We often don't have to work more than a day or two in a week. That gives us plenty of time to travel. Life is good for us toys. But mum and dad have jobs they have to attend every weekday or they get ... read more

... read more

I am in Paris! Our first week is almost over. It’s been a week since I left but it feels longer. The sightseeing and our preparatory classes have been exhausting, but I am looking forward to exploring Paris a little more this weekend. My French has already progressed rapidly—for the most part, I can understand pretty easily what people are saying and I’ve even managed to sit through entire afternoons of our boring preparatory classes understanding almost everything without having to translate in my head. Classes at the University of Paris (7) start next Monday, and that will be the real test. And au contraire to what everyone said, no one has responded to me in English when I spoke to them in French, although they sometimes comment on my accent. The weather has been beautiful ... read more

On January 17th we were joined by Evan's mom, dad, Jay, Sara, and Sunit for a 5 day whirlwind tour of London and Paris…we covered so much ground in such a short period of time, we were all pretty exhausted by the end. Or were we exhausted because we were smoking Cuban cigars on the veranda until 2 am? I think that is more likely what did it! On Saturday we took Eurostar to Paris; we had wonderfully mid winter weather, great company, yummy food, and we managed to cram every major landmark into a 24-hour trip…can it get any better than that? We hit the Louvre, Notre Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, a boat tour on the Seine, the Champs Elysée, and numerous cafes and eateries…here are the photo highlights…... read more

I probably should have started this when I got here; but since I didn't, the first one will just be super long! I will try to update weekly, if not more often, depends on how much is going on. The flight over went really well. The food was quite gross, but what else can a person expect from plane food? :) None of my baggage was lost, so that was also good. I was picked up from the airport by a girl from the school. We also picked up two girls from Greece, a girl from Mexico, and a girl from China. They were all very nice! The apartment is very nice and is in a very good location. The only downfall is that there isn't a living room area where people can come and hang ... read more

I took a jog out to the Calanques which is basically right behind my school. Everyone, it seems, (French and tourists) hike or walk here on Sundays. It is very pretty. Hope you enjoy the pictures.... read more

The other day, as I was coming home, the guy who owns the model train store next to my apartment to tell me how beautiful I was and then asked me out about 5 times. I finally got rid of him, but then while standing in the elevator, I got to thinking: "it probably wouldn't be so bad--we could build model trains together and make them go all over his apartment." He's probably a total catch, and I let him get away. I got reimbursed 40 euros for all the shit that I went through on the metro the other day, getting stopped and having the officers tell me that I have the wrong ticket. And I found peanut butter in the super market yesterday: it completely brightened my day. Last night we went on this ... read more
