Now let me tell you about Christmas this year. My break started the Thursday before Christmas. For the next couple days, I spent almost all day just walking around Lille and absorbing as much of the Christmas spirit as possible. I found it fairly easy, since it was so beautifully decorated and the streets, sidewalks, and shops were as full as they could be with last-minute shoppers. My original plan had been to go to Montataire on the Sunday before Christmas, the 23rd, spend Christmas with David, and then leave the 26th or 27th. I ended up heading there a day early. David and I spent the next couple days just hanging out, spending time watching movies and taking walks and drinking wine and making food. Though I know Lille quite well and it is my ... read more

In the mid semester break (exam week) I was lucky enough to have no exams. Despite the large amount of work and assignments that still had to be done we both decided to bugger it and see some Italian and French Alps for a week. We flew to Milan, Italy and straight away trained to the north of Italy to the Valle d’Aoste. We arrived at the gorgeous town of Aosta and saw the beautiful winding road leading from the valley to the Mont Blanc tunnel that went through the Alps to France. We spent our days walking and hiking the mountains of the area, up to heights of over 2000 metres. The temperature was freezing but we still had beautiful daytime weather to see the views from the top of the mountains. There was snow ... read more

Me and a group of five other international students went on a weekend trip to snowboard/ski in the Alps. This was the best snowboarding I have ever done! In terms of the mountain, conditions, ski town, etc. The mountain was called Alpe D'Huez and is used for the Tour De France as well as snowboarding/skiing. We traveled from Marseille to Valence on the TGV train, then from Valence to Grenoble on a bus. There we went from Grenoble to Alpe D'Huez by bus as well. The mountain was so huge! Our group, three guys and three girls, (from California and Canada) stayed in a youth hostel right on the mountain. It was actually between two runs. The pictures can do no justice to how beautiful this area was. Enjoy!... read more

I finally have my class schedule figured out, with classes starting this week. Last week I did attend a sociology class at Paris 7, but I'm dropping it in favor of another sociology class (Cities and Social Spaces). We had our first session of the course today and it was really interesting! I was excited because I actually understood pretty much everything. And I really like urban sociology. The coffee I had before might have helped too. The university has these fantastic little coffee machines that produce a pretty good cup for 0.50 euro. That might be the only fantastic thing about the french university itself--the fact that French university education is free is pretty evident in the decidedly low-tech buildings (and I think mine is one of the nicer, newer ones). My other two classes ... read more

Bon Jour everyone! So this week, after spending Monday through Wednesday in Edinburgh, eating leek and chicken pot pie, I got the chance to go to Paris for an extended weekend. My mom had meetings at the France office earlier in the week and invited me to fly down to visit (who can reject Paris I'll never know?!) On Thursday after class, around 2:30, I took a bus to the Edinburgh airport and flew to France. The flight was a bit bumpy, but only took 2 hours. Upon landing, I got into a taxi and drove to the hotel where my mom was staying. We were staying at the Hotel Astor, the closest monument would probably be the Arc de Triomphe. I was planning to take the train from Charles De Gaul airport into Paris, but ... read more

Marseilles was our next stop and it is apparently the cultural melting pot of France (whatever that means). Straight away though we did notice that it is different from the rest of southern France, a little edgier and with the markings of various cultures. The afternoon we arrived we walked around the old town and down past the Vieux Port. From the port we hiked up the huge hill to the Basillica Notre Dame de la Garde which sits high above the city. Great views of the city were our reward and the Basillica was impressive, there were also some scars on the outside from WWII. On our second day we took a day trip to France's oldest city, Avignon. It's most famous for being the home of the Pope in the 1300's after they fled ... read more
