today was a leisurely super hot day. heard it was 93 degrees. its so fricken hot even at nine am. we started the day off by taking a long bus ride to the piere lachoise cemetary where jim morrison, oscar wilde, and other famous people are buried. that cemetary is huge. you can easily spend all day in it and i wish we could have. i like being among the undead. we witnessed a priest spreading the ashes of someone. oscar wilde's tomb was kewl but sad. people put lipstick kisses all over it and on it was a depressing quote about how the outcasts always moarn and the moaners are always outcasts. so sad. took lots of pictures there. mostly of spooky looking statues. i was surprised with how many jews were buried there. oh ... read more

This morning we headed straight out to Luton to catch the plane out to Paris. We said a grateful good bye to Dana and the very warm weather in the Uk and took the train out. We had some time to kill before the plane, so we decided to get rid of the rest of our pounds and had lunch. We still had just over a pound left after that so I went in search of nibbles. I found I was one pence short of what we wanted, so in true tight-arse style, I scoured the floors to find my extra 1p and I found 5! Ti-tow!! heh heh heh.... Anyway, we had to change hostels as the one we originally booked had some last minute problems so they moved us to a 2 star hotel. ... read more

Hi all, Well this will probally be my last entry. We are back in Paris now and we have one night here before heading home tomarrow. I can't believe that three weeks have gone by so quickly. We had a good time in Volos which is the city we decided to head to after Mykonos. We were going to head to another island but that didn' t really work out. Jared really wanted to do some rock climbing while he was here since he carried his gear all over Europe. The airlines sent his bag back to the youth hostel in Athens. So we decided to go back to Athens, pick up his bag and do some sight seeing on the mainland instead of the islands. We heard from several people that there are great things ... read more

woke up early today to hit the louvre. we took the bus and used our museum passes to use the ''secret" fast entrance near the cafe there while other people waited in line. we got there at about 8:30 and only had about five people in front of us. we ran like maniacs to see of course, the mona lisa. it was much smaller then i thought it was going to be. i kept going back and forth looking at it thinking "what am i not seeing?". we then went to see the venus de milo. impressive but so many other sculptures were better imo. the louvre is huge. looked and many paintings which were beautiful. not as many jesus paintings as i thought there would be. so hammurabi's code obelisk which i took a picture ... read more

Last night we walked over to the Louvre to see the Pyramid and the gardens of les Tuileries. Inside the courtyard of the Louvre and within the gardens it is very peaceful and quiet. Wandering around Pere-Lachaise Cemetery this morning we found the graves of many famous people, including Georges Bizet (just for you, Maddie & Arden!), Gertrude Stein & Alice B. Toklas, Colette, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Georges Seurat, Richard Wright... We looked for Maria Callas but couldn't find her. This cemetery is huge - 110 acres - and is absolutely filled with graves. After lunch, we headed to the Catacombs to cool off! It's been very warm here, mid- to high 80's, and of course much more humid than we're used to. The catacombs in Paris are about 20 m underground - ... read more

i had a nice day today. we heard on sundays that many things were closed in paris but because sundays are busy days for jews, we went to the marais section of paris which is the jewish and gay area. we waited for a bus which rick steves says runs everyday. well a kind french lady went to us and said it doesnt run on sundays. she told us a bus that does go there so we headed over there. when the bus arrived, we said to the bus driver the name of the section we wanted to go to in french. he just kept nodding his head and said no a lot so we took a cab. we later found out that the bus does take us to that section. the driver was just your ... read more

2006-06-10 Dear Friends: Well, the big day is almost here. Today is Saturday, June 10th. Tomorrow (after only one more sleep!), I leave for my adventure in Paris. I am so excited. A million things are swirling around in my head. I’m almost packed and I am spending some quality time with Mr. Puff because it will be a long time between his kitty kisses. Eighteen days…imagine! My friend, Judy, and I have been chatting regularly - just like schoolgirls. And as our departure became closer, the mood of the calls became more and more elated while the list of things to do seemed to grow instead of shrink. Judy has been in phone contact with our hotel on occasion to verify that all is okay. The fact that the World Series Soccer Game will be ... read more

Part XIV We were on our own in Paris, but we had our map, guidebook and Linda - we were all right. The first thing we did was go down to the metro and buy a carnet - a book of ten tickets, which can be used on the metro or the buses and works out much cheaper. Took the metro to the Place de la Bastille where we were booked to go on our canal trip. In the centre of the square is the 52m (170ft) high July Column and inside the foot is the crypt where rest the 504 victims of July 1830 and the February 1848 Revolution. The radio-controlled yachts advertising the 32nd America’s Cup fascinated Howard so he watched them whilst Linda went off to find the picnic she had been promising ... read more

Dan had been looking forward to today's visit to the Marche aux Puces (Flea Market) for a long time. It did not disappoint. We started out the day at a market on the southern edge of Paris, at Porte de Vanves. This is a decent sized market, with dealers setting up their tables each weekend, almost all seemed like professionals who do this on a regular basis, with a few "yard sale" type set-ups on the fringes. There was a wide variety of merchandise. We arrived just as the dealers were setting up and found some items to bring home as we browsed. A few dealers were willing to negotiate prices, but not the majority. Mid-morning we headed home to drop off our findings and then headed to the markets north of Paris. These markets are ... read more

we all woke up late skipping the expensive non refundable versaille bike tour and paying a shitload of money buying a train package to take us there and grant us admission there. versaille is the palace of all palaces and not covered with paintings of jesus everywhere. i was impressed. my parents then got friendly with a couple they met that also grew up in queens in nyc. it was hot as hell today. my jeans started to stick to me and felt more like leggings. we ate a super late lunch that was expensive but still not as bad as england. our tiny awful salad had pate on the side so i just didnt eat it because i was so fricken hungry. i wish soda here wasnt a rip off and i wish they used ... read more
