It's been a lot harder to keep this blog up than I thought. The main problem is finding a place with a computer that's easy to use. The French keyboard is horrible if you aren't used to it. Sometimes you can't convert it back to English. The range of computers I've used include one with a plastic covered keyboard requiring coins to keep it going. Just when you forget to add money, it kicks you out. Others are so slow, it isn't worth the effort. Today I crossed town to use a cafe near where I stayed last week. Much better!! My friends (three sisters) arrived last week on a tour and I was able to tag along on several of their activities including: a bus tour of the city, trips to Versailles and the ... read more

So... me and katie have been in paris for a total of less than a day, and we have already had one of the worst experinces ever. (By the way... the keyboards are COMPLETELY different so if it has weird spellings or characters thats why...) So our train got here at 12:35 this morning, and once we got off the train we then discovered NO ONE SPEAKS ENGLISH!!! and the people that do speak english dont WANT to speak english :( So we waited in line for a taxi for about half an hour then realized we didnt need one.... we needed the #2 bus, but we got on the bus and couldnt tell the driver where we needed to go, so we stepped off for a moment to find some help, and he left. Then ... read more

So I couldn't really think of a cool french title for this blog, so I decided to introduce you to Dan's french name! Tough to say where it came from and what the motivation behind the name "my little hat" came from... Just my french genious at work I guess, a certain je ne sais quoi. Today is our last full day here in Paris, our time here has been fun. Today we were all set to get up at a logical hour to have breakfast and go tour around a bit more.... however when Dan said " do you want a little more sleep?" my body just couldn't pass that up. Considering our health when we don't get enough sleep and the comfy bed I was in I nodded and turned over! Now normally I ... read more

Hello out there- Greetings from a somewhat sunny day here in Paris! I’ve been keeping busy with a mix of work and play over the past few weeks that is quickly becoming more play and less work: woo hoo! School is about over, I have only one more final on Wednesday and then I am done! It is hard to believe that I made it. I came over with such low expectations for my academic performance but in the end have done well and was able to turn out one 10-page paper and two 7-page papers in the last two weeks, en français of course. Here are some cultural differences that still shock me after 9 months of living here: 1) I have been going to the swimming pool to get some exercise and am shocked ... read more

It took me not quite 2 hours to get from Sylvie’s place to Versailles via the metro, even though it is only about 12 k from Paris. I overslept and around 9 am Sylvie woke me up saying Kristina (a friend from Australia) told me to get up and get a move on it. I was half asleep and totally thought I was back in Australia, but it turned out they were just chatting on MSN. The world is a very small place. Versailles is the embodiment of the word opulence. It was built by Louis XIV and he and Marie Antoinette used to live there before that whole French Revolution happened and made their lives a little bit tougher. Instead of French Nobles, Versailles is now occupied by tourists of almost every nationality under the ... read more

A long weekend in London at the end of May Beth convinced me to go to Paris for the weekend again. So I missed the man being stabbed on my bus and made trip number two to the city of lights. This time I remembered a phrase book, and also my handy skills- which came out frequently during the trip. This time we took the very slow route seeing as we were on a very tight budget. We went with an obscure tour company that we found in the TNT magazine, and were somewhat concerned that when we turned up there would not even be a am tour leaving from Victoria Station (at 7am in the morning). Beth had a bit of a shock when I called her when she was due to be leaving the ... read more

Hello to everyone! Hope you have had a lovely day, we certainly have! I will tell you all about it; but first I must have a rant... Through out our stay in Europe we have marveled at the old buildings, the friendly tourism assistants, the interesting hostels, and the spectacular history. In short, this continent has got it going on.... all except one thing.... the pay toilet situation. See I do enjoy a good clean facility or a toilet anywhere for my use really, however, do I not think that I should have to pay for it... this is especially true when facilities are always in locations in which you have already paid to get into, example restaurants, train stations, metros etc. I believe that the bathrooms should be included in the price. Now I understand ... read more

After I left Ireland, I headed back to Germany for a day. I had about 4 hours to spare from the time I landed in Frankfurt and the time I had to leave for my overnight train to Paris. Frankfurt is now known for its business and banking districts, however skyscrapers didn’t really interest me much so I ended up taking the tram down to the historic part of Frankfurt on the Main River. The historic old city is made up of timber houses, and several churches. I walked around for a couple of hours before heading back to the train station. Unfortunately the sleeping compartments where all sold out, so I had to get a regular seat for the overnight ride. The train was packed and of course a guy in our compartment was snoring ... read more

Well, we made it to France safe and sound! The first day was busy but fun. I am traveling on my own now. Jared has left on his train for Brainçon. I wasn't sure about that at first but I think I' m getting used to it. Last night I went down to see the Norte Dame. It was beautiful at night. I hitched a ride from a French guy I met when I was walking to see the Effiel Tower last night. He said it was a great place to see at night, so he offered to take me there. It was worth it. What a beutiful veiw! Jared and I have been enjoying Paris so far. Jared got to spend one last night in Paris then he expected. I guess when he went to ... read more

to pick up where i left off going to the tower, a group of us walked down and saw the light show, honestly it made me gasp i wasnt expecting it, and then on the way back.... we saw a guy propose to his girlfriend! it was adorable. she said yes, because there is no way to not say yes to that. the 24th was my profs bday and we went walking all over the latin quarter to his old haunts, went to a picturesque cafe and toured around. went to notre dame, saw the gargoyles and flying buttresses, really intricate and wonderful. we even went to the shakespeare and company bookstore, which now does creative writing salons for anyone intersted! since then i have been to the louvre, which is huge, out to the sacre ... read more
