Geo: 48.1669, 7.29728After the big drive, and three countries yesterday, we decided to take it very easy this morning. We stayed in our little village (one main street and half a dozen side streets), following the map that the very kind lady in the tourist office gave us (she even rang our hostess for us last night when we arrived, rather than direct us to where there was a public phone and a phone card). The town is very old, with most of the buildings being medieval, and the remains of the walls and towers adding to the charm. The vines are just outside the town walls – you can see them at the edges of the village streets, and we also went for a walk amongst the vines for a lovely view back into town. ... read more

Geo: 48.1669, 7.29728It was sad to leave Miranda and Jonathon as they headed off to work – but we'll see them in three weeks at their wedding in Italy. And of course, I am not sure that they were sorry to see the departure of the noisy Perissinotto family – at least one of the cats was quite traumatized by the noise and sudden movements of the kids, and I seemed to give Miranda's washing machine a good workout! Then we were off again, with bags loaded in the car, on one of our longest driving days. Brussels was an easy city to drive in, and we were quickly on the road and off towards Luxembourg (about 2 hours away). Unfortunately, a 45 minute delay for road works meant that we were all tired and hungry when ... read more

Day 14 - We began the day with a very poor breakfast - they brought it up to our room, which sounded like it would be great, but they failed to bring any milk for the tea.... All I wanted was some tea! We ended up going and having a second breakfast after tipping the milk-less tea and coffee down the smelly drain, and only eating one of the hard-looking croissants. From here we attempted to go to the Palais Rohan, but discovered upon arriving that it didn't open until 12. Luckily it had only been a two minute walk from our second-breakfast, so we headed to the Alsatian Museum instead. Fifteen minutes later, we arrived there to find that it also did not open until 12pm. So we continued on, heading to Petit France to ... read more

Ellie and I planned a weekend trip to Strasbourg ages ago, but it somehow managed to creep up on it. Time is passing more quickly here in Douai, thankfully, and I ended up throwing things in my bag in the twenty minute window between my bus home from school and our train to Paris. Fortunately I've had a lot of practice with packing these last six months. Strasbourg is located right on the border with Germany, and it's been passed past back and forth between France and Germany several times. It's been part of France since WWII, but the German influence is everywhere. The streets are all named twice: once in French and once in German. The food is different from the typical French cuisine, and the architecture is much different. It was a nice change ... read more

This was one of my favorite day trips that we took. A quick drive west maybe an hour or so and we found ourselves in france. Once we crossed the bridge we were met with unfamiliar signs and language. This is a beautiful area. I loved all the old winding narrow streets. We walked near the water. Unfortunately due to the crazy amount of rain and snow melting, the river was too high so we couldnt take the boat tour. She told Nick as friendly as the French do. With luck we stumbled upon the fleamarket I was hoping to find, but everything was too expensive for my wallet. The best part of our afternoon was pizza, pasta, and beer at an outdoor cafe. It was great! There are some really great photos of the Strasbourg ... read more

Ok! It wasn't quite exactly like June 6th, 1944, or any other great battles that happened in theses seas, but it was an invasion on my own. I got here by boat and even if it was a pretty luxurious ferry, I would rather have crossed the Channel in an old 17th century conqueror vessel with sabres in my hands and a knive between my teeth... Anyway I was ready to explore new lands and sack new cities.

Please be patient, we're having some technical difficulties... The last month has presented me with a series of technological and administrative difficulties. One December afternoon, I was singing along to cheery Mariah Carey Christmas carol covers, when my itunes keep stopping and my computer began lagging. None of the programs on my computer would respond so I tried restarting it. This is when, what I came to know as the "folder of doom," appeared alone on a blank grey screen. I tried multiple times to restart it with no luck. I looked up what this mysterious symbol of a folder with a question mark meant on Taryn's computer and the news was not pleasant. My hard drive had crashed! Maybe the world was trying to tell me not to listen to Mariah Carey? Straight away Monday ... read more

I have been in France for almost 2 months! I can't believe how quickly the time is going now that I’m pretty much finished with all the administrative paper work, and am getting into a routine with school. I absolutely love the classes I’m taking. From Gender and Politics to Sociologoy of International Relations, my classes are a lot more specific and I find them mre interesting than what I was taking at SFU. Although, I must admit, I am now grateful for the million french grammar courses I took, and my professors that drilled the proper technique for writing a french dissertaion into my head! Most of my courses here don’t require reading or have assignments, they are 100% based on the final exam. This is a bit scary, but in the mean time before ... read more

Day 3……On the way to Colmar, France….after a fantastic breakfast with fantastic views we were on our way to Colmar, France. We had a little bit of a difficult road change which forced me into a power U-Turn, which brought me to an intersection which I found out was a no left turn intersection. This of course was a mere moment of excitement for Gail (she will kill me this year) after I made an illegal left turn and ran over some little bitty rubber things with reflectors on them that separated lanes (Alana tell Loraine she would be proud). Gail is now taking over…They were not little bitty, but tall, at least two feet maybe be bigger, reflectors…I could not believe that Larry ran over three of them… Thank goodness it did not hurt ... read more

Thursday Attempt #2 at finding a pool to go swimming at! This time I was going with a friend and I knew where the pool was, so you would think there wouldn’t be a problem right? Guess again! The pool was so full there were probably 15-20 people in each 25m lane! I did about 3 laps and then decided to leave because swimming in such a crowded pool was pointless; I had to stop every 2 minutes. So exactly one week after getting lost trying to find the other pool, I found myself once again lost for a place to practice! Maybe next Thursday I will try somewhere else, third time’s a charm right? I did ending up having a great sandwich that day from a place called “Made in France.” There were a bunch ... read more
