Just finished day two of Strasbourg and still going strong! I stumbled upon a European fair today and saw, among other things, an immense Alsacian cow, a footvolley competition, the Tesla Roadster, as well as possibly the worst car in existence. With that, back to Poland! After we left Berlin for Poland, I quickly came to realize that the Polish countryside rivals Nebraska and Wyoming for most boring drive. At one point I fell asleep looking at a stand of trees, and when I woke up a few hours later, I thought we were still passing the same stands of trees! We arrived at the Barcyz Valley, though, and the scenery became much nicer. The Barycz Valley has the largest number of freshwater ponds in Europe, and consequently also hosts an amazing array of birds and ... read more

Finally I've arrived in France and have the time and the access to internet to write my very first of many blog posts, which should be quite a bear, to say the least. In general, I hope to update you all at least once a week, on a to-be-determined day of the week; If you so choose, you can just automate the responsibility of checking my blog here by choosing to subscribe to the blog and letting the internet inform you when I have posted any new content. Thanks for your collective interest, I'll try to keep these relatively short (excluding this one) and entertaining! Some background on the trip: I arrived in Berlin 13 days early to join all the other study abroad students on a journey through Central Europe. We stopped at Berlin, Wroclaw ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Colmar August 29th 2010

We spent the last three days in the Alsace region of France near the German border in a town called Colmar. This region is known for its white wines, German style food and architecture style. Our first stop was the Unterlinden Museum. Rick Steves, the travel book writer, says that this is one of the best museums in France and it is certainly very interesting. An audioguide comes with the entry fee and is very well done. The museum itself is at least 150 years old; some of the audioguide entries mention that a particular painting was donated in 1850. It is also a very eclectic collection…everything from medieval paintings to furniture to suits of armour to modern art. They even moved the interiors of a couple of buildings into the museum. The centerpiece is a ... read more

Strasbourg is beautiful and looks like a little gingerbread town. It’s surrounded by the River Ill and is made up of some many pretty little, half wooded houses. Unfortunately the weekend we arrived was a long weekend in France so the place was packed. After much pushing and shoving we went on a boat tour around the city which was a great introduction. Like many other cities in France, Strasbourg was constructed in such a way to prevent invasion. So much so that they were able to manage the water levels of the river to prevent enemy boats from sailing in (see the picture of the gated bridge) and created locks to move up and down different levels of the river. While on the cruise you go through two locks. The boat squeezes into this tiny ... read more

Today is a day we have been looking forward to since we planned this trip. We went through the area of Germany and France where Uncle Jim saved a man’s life and was injured himself. We spent a lot of time researching this area near the Rhine River at the border of France and Germany. As we drive along I watched the road signs trying to see any of the towns we knew Uncle Jim and his unit had been. We saw several of them and I tried to get pictures of the road signs - not easy to do through bus windows. I took several pictures of the area just so we would know how the area looked. We hoped to see the Moder River but learned it was a small tributary of the Rhine ... read more

Brian set off to get tyres fitted. Calum and I went back into Strasbourg and spent a few fantastic hours at Le Vaisseau a Science and Technology museum for children. Got into big trouble on the train on the way back for not validating the train ticket before travelling, the excuse ‘I didn’t know I had to’ wasn’t cutting with the (jobsworth) guard until a young French speaking Irishman came to my rescue! Back at the campsite, Calum met a couple of French boys on holiday and they have been playing on the bikes, at the park and with the Nintendo DS’s. Will stay another day and make plans. Decided to drive to Italy then ferry to Greece and into Turkey, Lewis has just told us that things are not well in Greece and there are ... read more

Another slow start, we caught the train into Strasbourg where we went to see the Astrological clock in the Cathedrale de Notre-Dame which strikes noon everyday at 12:30. This turned out to be a bit of a disappointment but you are never sure until you have done something. After lunch we had a stroll round the beautiful city of Strasbourg. Have decided to get new tyres for the Beast and therefore said our farewells to Mr Alphonse (and also purchased some very fine Pinot Noir from his celler) and after a few false starts Brian managed to find a company that could supply the new tyres for us tomorrow. Back to Molsheim for a couple more nights, this time to the municipal campsite to get some power to charge all our electrical devices and top up ... read more

Travelled to Molsheim to spend a couple of days exploring Strasbourg. Bought a book called ‘French Passion’ which lets you stay free on farms, vineyards etc. (the deal is really that you support the establishment by buying some of their produce). Arrived at Cave Kaes in the centre of Molsheim, after Monsieur Alphonse (who spoke no English but had all the French gesticulations) had some cars moved and managed to guide/manoeuvre Brian and van through the narrow courtyard into his yard beside the dog, cats and a couple of horses. After a glass of wine with our host we set out to explore the town. ... read more

Geo: 48.5829, 7.74375After all three kids did a repeat performance to buy bread and croissants, we headed off to Strasbourg, which was about 50 mins away. It is quite a large city, and one of the European Parliament seats, and after a bit of a false start to find the tourism office or a tourist map, we were thrilled to find the tourist centre is all very close to each other, and easy to navigate on foot. (Boo and hiss to the hotel concierge who wouldn't give us a free map of the city, because we were not guests! And thanks to the helpful girls at the Best Western Hotel, who not only gave us the free map but showed us what things to see!) We walked along the River Ile, watching boats navigate the locks, ... read more

Geo: 48.1667, 7.29707Having established that the shop next to our little apartment was a boulangerie, the big kids went off with 5 Euro and enough French to buy 2 croissants and 2 baguettes! Success! They returned with huge smiles and explained that the lady in the shop spoke no English, but they had bought the bread without any hassles (and with only some sign language!)and with lots of smiles. They were so proud of themselves, and we were equally proud. This is why we came!Off to Haut Koenigbourg, a nearby castle that we could see towering over the vineyards. (we stopped briefly on the way to the castle to photograph the storks nesting in the town of Ribeauville.) The castle stands on a hill almost 800 metres above the surrounding area, so the views from the ... read more
