Hello everybody, I hear you'all are " sweating to the oldies" over there! Coolish here about 65F, some rain. Tomorrow we will go up to see some old friends in Germany. Stay 2 nights and than come back to Stuttgart on Thursday to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Today we did a few more villages in the Alsace. Obernai and Dambach le Ville. More grocery shopping which is more difficult here in France than in Germany or Austria. I have to admit they have excellent potatoes and wonderful mustard. OK OK the wine is good too! Hard to believe that we have been here 10 days already. We leave France on the 30th to go up to Belgium. It will be a nice change of scenery. It is a 8-9 hour train trip. But it will be ... read more

Hello all, A week ago we left Denver. It seems a long time. I guess it's always that way when you are away from your own surroundings. I think that today Gloria should put her 2 cents in, so here it comes. Driving through France and staying in someone's home are quite different in the following ways; To wake up and see the hillsides covered with grapevines, hear and see the farmers and their small tractors tending the vineyards. Is really like being there -- oh that's right I am really here! That's what France is all about 'the grape'. Red or White I wouldn't know which is best. Where we are staying the owners bought the lot next to their home to preserve their view and planted grapes on it, their grapes make white wine ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Riquewihr July 12th 2011

Hello everyone, IF I SENT THIS BEFORE--IGNORE IT! I see that I saved it but may have forgotten to publish it? Yesterday we re-visited some of the villages we saw in 2007. Eguisheim, Turckheim and Riquewihr. The second time is never as good as the first. But it was a nice day and we didn't want to stray too far. Today we drove across into Germany's Black Forest. It was a nice day but by afternoon it became very hot (33C) I think that may be (90+F)? At about 1:PM we stopped at a nice Gasthof in the Simonswald for lunch.A nice schnitzel with a gravy and Rosti (which is like a really great hash browns) Gloria also had a mixed salad from the buffet. When we got back we went to the market to buy ... read more

We are here! A good flight from Denver to Atlanta. A long flight from Atlanta to Zurich. Sort of "Sardines" on Delta 767, Arrived Zurich at 7:45. Took the train to Mulhouse, Fr. where Mathew picked us up. That was yesterday (Sat). I'm up this morning at 4:15- can't sleep! Making some plans for this week. Black Forest, Mercedes-Benz Plant/Museum in Stuttgart, Germany etc. Trying to find a grocery store late on Saturday was difficult. They close early and are not open on Sunday. We did just make it and got some things for a few days. Especially needed coffee. Can't start the day without it. Jet lag yesterday set in at about 2:00 pm. Nap till 4:00. Force yourself to get up or I would be up at midnight instead of 4:15 am. My GPS ... read more

We stayed in Strasbourg for three nights after leaving Disneyland. The weather there was nice but extremely hot luckily our hotel had a pool. Strasbourg was quite a big city although it wasn't the size of Paris it would have been one of the bigger cities in France. It also had really good transport which made it easy to get around. They had special bike tracks and lanes for cyclists and they also had trams going. There wasn't much to do in Strasbourg although the guy at reception thought otherwise. The day after we arrived we went for a walk around the city and got a feel for the place. Although Strasbourg is in France we were only a 20 minute bus ride away from Germany. So that's what we did. We weren't there for long ... read more

On emerging from the American bubble that was Disneyland, we have landed in some odd foreign country. We're still in France but there is such a mixture of languages, food, and architecture here it is quite disorienting as to where we are. Strasbourg is right on the border with Germany and the german influence is very strong. Everyone here is trilingual and extremely fluent. Even though we are persevering with our french attempts we are replied to in either English or German. All menus come with German and English subtitles. The local food specialty is tarte flamme which is like a pizza but a very very thin base (oblong shape with rounded corners), with creme fraiche then whatever topping. No tomato or cheese. They were quite yummy. Not so yummy was the sauerkraut. Very few here ... read more

Strasbourg Arriving in Strasbourg was not so bad. Stupid taxi driver should have pointed to the street I wanted instead of giving me attitude and driving me but whatever. I had booked this hotel (a Best Western, the first on the list and I my internet connection was troublesome so I took it and hoped for the best) at the last minute- just that morning actually and it turned out to be a good pick. I walked in feeling weary and disillusioned from that jerk of a taxi guy and they made me feel SOOO welcome and at ease! They were friendly, helpful, gracious, sweet and wonderful. I know that sounds over the top and maybe it was my state of mind but let me tell you it was like a breath of fresh air and ... read more

Burası da Fransız şarap yolu üzerinde kalıyor ve Mulhouse' a yakın şirin bir yer. 1966 yılı Nobel ödüllü Alfred Kastel 'in doğum yeri. Tarihi 774 lere kadar uzanıyor.
