New York taki Özgürlük anıtı... read more

Geo: 47.9571, 7.2994 GUN 14 GUNLERDEN PERŞEMBE Sabah erkenden uyandım. Acilen toparlanmaya başladık. 5 günlük dağınıklığı toparlamak kolay değil. Hep içimde "bir şeyler unuttum" korkuları yaşıyorum. Hele saatimi bundan önceki otelde unutunca ... sabıkam nedeniyle de korkuyorum. Mal önemli değil ama salaklığıma kızıyorum. Kahvaltı da Görges yine harikalar yarattı. Kahvaltıdan sonra eşyaları arabaya yükledim. Sıra Görgesgillerle ayrılmaya geldi. Salya sümük bir ayrılış .. Yine bekleriz'ler.... Misafir kitabına yazan ilk Türk aile olduk. Gel gelelim Barbara faturayı getirdi ve avucunu açıp ödememizi bekledi. Şaşırdım zira bu yeri booking.com'dan seçmiştim. Parayı oraya ödediğimi söyle... read more

Panorama A movie set around the Cathedral of Strasbourg. The woman on the right in black is a famous French actress, allegedly...couldn't say who, sorry. I had a chance to pop over the border into France and enjoy the sights of Strasbourg. I love saying that, pop over into France or day trip to Switzerland (not that I've done this yet). Australia is so remote that we can't just say stuff like that offhandedly. Mostly we can say that we've gone to Noosa or Coolangatta or perhaps as far as Byron for the weekend. There used to be secret potluck flights with an old airline-gone-bust, that would fly you to Sydney or Melbourne for a shopping day. Not sure if any of the current providers still have these types of promotions. Anyway...first time, was with the ... read more

Ratings explained: JAC- Just another church 1* - worth a look 2* - Good Times 3* - Unmissable + - emphasis on the rating Arriving in the Champagne region we were surprised that every square inch of land wasn't covered with vineyards. We figured if you can only call your sparking wine 'Champagne' if it's grown in this region then everyone would be making the absolute most of it. This was of course a simplistic view... they do have every square inch of decent wine growing land covered in vines, we just didn't realise a lot of land in the Champagne region obviously isn't decent wine country...... We awoke on the morning of Nick's 30th birthday in our hotel in Champagne country and headed for the little town of Verzenay to find our favourite champagne ... read more

Strasbourg 5pm I am in a wifi hotel again - a rather nice one actually called Etc. - but still in Strasbourg Thurs. due to a strike (greve)- it affected 2 of the 5 tram routes - went to station to buy my ticket (which it still sold me - dumb machine!) but Brussels train not running at all altho some French trains - returning towards Hotel Patricia the tram did not go any further than Homme de Fer (Iron Man strangely!) - due to impending workers parade as you can see - a lot of smoke from a flare etc. The strike does not seem to have affected the shops tho - although a lot of them close for lunch anyway for an hour or so! the Etc hotel I just found taking a shortcut ... read more

yes folks, I think the Gourmet Mink award for best meal on the trip has a winner! Yes I am going to keep this short. After finding my rather groovy hotel by chance today I am also delighted to report that the best meal in France (and my last really) was virtually in the restaurant 10 m from the front door of the hotel. When I walked out earlier I had a quick look at the menu and decided that it would likely be the best place to eat. Although I did a bit of a further wander elsewhere down Grand Rue towards the river there were not really any places that merited attention. There was one very designed interior place which looked very groovy in terms of its design -- but I now question whether ... read more

I have dated this Wed.22 Sept. and hope to keep it short as there is simply not enough time to do all of these in huge detail. The arrival in Strasbourg from Colmar was relatively efficient as the train trip is only about 35 minutes. However finding a hotel here was impossible as I asked all the hotels within reasonable walking distance of the station -- I later found out, after seeing "complet" (full) on most hotel desks, so you did not even have to ask, that it was a European Parliament sitting week -- one week a month in which you can guarantee that the hotels are virtually booked up a year ahead. I had to resort to going right down to the bottom of the Old Town near the cathedral on spec and found ... read more

(this is also written in Strasbourg on 22/9) petit Corentin was apparently concerned he might not see me before he left for school so I made sure I got up at 7.45am to say goodbye. The girls had already gone so did not see them again. He was a little disappointed that I did not really speak French much - this is because it was simpler to speak English with Gisele (who is now teaching German so had apologised in advance for her English - but no problem there) and Francois - who was concerned that this might upset his German when he went back to work. He works a more family friendly 4 day week, with Monday off. The Swiss normal week is 42 hours surprisingly. Gisele works all 5 days but with different hours. ... read more

So I have now been in Strasbourg for more than a week! I have already had too many adventures to share, so I'll just share a few of the most recent ones. Yesterday I took a trip to the Vosges Mountains and hiked 15 kilometers of so up to Mont St. Odile. This "mountain" was pretty sad by Colorado standards, only 700 or so meters, but the French apparently don't use switchbacks for trails. We covered most of that elevation as directly as possible, which made it equally difficult to keep up with Hannah on the way up, and not respraining my ankle/ falling off the trail on the way down. In a showing of excellent planning, I wore jeans, a long-sleeve base layer, and brought a jacket and umbrella. I was extremely prepared for rain, ... read more
