Assiette du Vin
yes the French Golden Fork winner! yes folks, I think the Gourmet Mink award for best meal on the trip has a winner!
Yes I am going to keep this short. After finding my rather groovy hotel by chance today I am also delighted to report that the best meal in France (and my last really) was virtually in the restaurant 10 m from the front door of the hotel. When I walked out earlier I had a quick look at the menu and decided that it would likely be the best place to eat. Although I did a bit of a further wander elsewhere down Grand Rue towards the river there were not really any places that merited attention. There was one very designed interior place which looked very groovy in terms of its design -- but I now question whether the food will be up to the decor of the restaurant! It seemed to specialise in the flambee tarts or whatever the local specialty is -- have not actually seen or tasted one so do not know.
Anyway returned to Restaurant L'Asiette du Vin - that's the plate of wine or something. It also has a charming interior but it was the menu

dramatic late afternoon light that attracted me generally. Particularly when you are offered the complimentary appetiser in two shot glasses of a thin drinking puree/foam of carrot flavoured with something aromatic like cummin or something and a herring flavoured mousse you know that there is something going on here! Although she offered me the English menu I decided to stick with the French -- and although I had therefore worked out that the entree had mussels in it I was somewhat unprepared for what arrived - effectively like an Asian style fried spring roll with mussels in it served with two little moulds of a sort of smoked fish pate. Very tasty.
Although I had said to the very pleasant and efficient waitress that I wanted this particular white wine from the Jura (I was only guessing) she suggested that I might want to try it first, so she brought me a small sample - it was perhaps rather too "distinctive" - I decided that I would go with her choice of another dry white which was better. The main dish I had was "ombre chevalier" and as I could work out it was stuffed with pigs trotters (feet) I assumed it might

opp St Thomas (as distinct from bierstubb) have been horse (cheval) but chevalier is in fact a type of fish! So this was a rather unusual combo of two fish fillets curled around pigs trotter stuffing - which was rather plain and gelatinous so not as outrageous as all that. Dessert was a chocolat coulant (running) - like a small self saucing choc pudding with black cherries and some vanilla ice cream. For the 3 courses it was 32E - which is about $46 and superb value I thought - the total meal cost 42E - I have paid 10E or more for much less! This was very conceived food superbly executed. I think if they are open for lunch I might go there tomorrow for a second helping! who needs breakfast?
