Ireland is grand We arrived in Ireland in the morning and took the bus to Belfast, in Northern Ireland. Belfast is probably one of my favourite places I've been to. The people were so friendly and the city was really interesting. I asked a man on the street if he knew how to get to our hostel and he walked us all the way there! When we got to the hostel, the owner told us to drop off our stuff in our room and not to worry about paying until we were leaving. He also took the time to recommend the best things to see on a map and told us what not to waste our money on. He even made everyone in the hostel a full breakfast in the morning! In Belfast we went ... read more

The UK - England and Scotland Taryn and I got up at 4 :45 am to catch our train to London. Taking the Eurostar was great - so much easier and relaxing than flying. We got into London around lunch time and were supposed to meet a friend of mine from high school at 1 :30pm in Trafalgar Square. We didn’t end up meeting my friend for two reasons. First of all, we though the distance between the train station we were at and the square were within walking distance. Turns out it took us an hour to walk there. Secondly, those of you who have been to Trafalgar Square will understand, even if we had made it there on time, it is practically impossible to find someone there ! It’s one of the largest ... read more

A Berliner Weekend Thursday morning I caught a train to Basel, Switzerland so I could get a flight from the airport there to Berlin. I arrived in Basel a bit early so I walked around the town. It was such a gorgeous sunny day and the town was really nice. Then I headed to the airport where my flight was 2 hours late !! There wasn’t really anyone around for me to talk to so I just did some studying. When I arrived at the hostel in Berlin it was about 9 :30pm. I had dinner at an italian restaurant near the hostel and then went to bed. Alex would be arriving the next day at lunch, so I had the morning to kill before she arrived. I walked to a nearby park with another person ... read more

Paris: capital of the world Thursday afternoon I took a 2 hour train from Strasbourg to Paris and met up with my mom and sister at the hotel we stayed at. It was great to see them!! I can’t believe 5 months have passed since I’ve arrived in France. I liked Paris, however, it wasn’t as glamorous or magical as they make it out to be in the movies (is anything ever as good as the Hollywood version?). The weather wasn’t the greatest (it was cold and overcast) which makes sight seeing a little bit less enjoyable. I think we saw almost all the top tourist sights. The first day we saw the Moulin Rouge, stopped by the Gallerie Lafayette (a huge department store), and shopped along Rue de Rivoli. That night we went to the ... read more

Christmas Break Christmas in France was fantastic. Two friends of mine from home we're spending the break traveling in Germany and France, so they stopped in Strasbourg for a few days, and then I headed to Bretagne (the Brittany region of France) with them to spend a few days over Christmas with them and their family. The family had three girls (ages 7, 9, 13) and it was so much fun spending Christmas in a family with kids! They got so so excited about everything and their enthousiam was contagious!! The family also made excellent meals (that took two hours to eat!! I don't think Thanksgiving at home even lasts long than half an hour!) After Christmas I headed to Avignon, a town in the south of France to visit my friend Alex and her family ... read more

Please be patient, we're having some technical difficulties... The last month has presented me with a series of technological and administrative difficulties. One December afternoon, I was singing along to cheery Mariah Carey Christmas carol covers, when my itunes keep stopping and my computer began lagging. None of the programs on my computer would respond so I tried restarting it. This is when, what I came to know as the "folder of doom," appeared alone on a blank grey screen. I tried multiple times to restart it with no luck. I looked up what this mysterious symbol of a folder with a question mark meant on Taryn's computer and the news was not pleasant. My hard drive had crashed! Maybe the world was trying to tell me not to listen to Mariah Carey? Straight away Monday ... read more

Alicante Saturday morning I woke up and quickly threw together the things I needed for the week into my backpack. Taryn came to my door and we only had a few minutes left to catch our bus when she realized she was still wearing her slippers! After throwing on shoes, we then rushed out of our rooms to catch the bus to meet Katherine (we almost missed it, but didn’t thankfully!). Nothing like a rushed beginning to our trip! From there, the three of us headed over to the train station to take a train to Basel, Switzerland where we next took a bus to the Basel airport. The attendants at the airport were very easy going and didn’t even measure or weigh our carry on bags, despite various warnings that the airline had strict carry ... read more

I have been in France for almost 2 months! I can't believe how quickly the time is going now that I’m pretty much finished with all the administrative paper work, and am getting into a routine with school. I absolutely love the classes I’m taking. From Gender and Politics to Sociologoy of International Relations, my classes are a lot more specific and I find them mre interesting than what I was taking at SFU. Although, I must admit, I am now grateful for the million french grammar courses I took, and my professors that drilled the proper technique for writing a french dissertaion into my head! Most of my courses here don’t require reading or have assignments, they are 100% based on the final exam. This is a bit scary, but in the mean time before ... read more

Thursday Attempt #2 at finding a pool to go swimming at! This time I was going with a friend and I knew where the pool was, so you would think there wouldn’t be a problem right? Guess again! The pool was so full there were probably 15-20 people in each 25m lane! I did about 3 laps and then decided to leave because swimming in such a crowded pool was pointless; I had to stop every 2 minutes. So exactly one week after getting lost trying to find the other pool, I found myself once again lost for a place to practice! Maybe next Thursday I will try somewhere else, third time’s a charm right? I did ending up having a great sandwich that day from a place called “Made in France.” There were a bunch ... read more

On Thursday I had class until 12 and then I wanted to go to a swim class for triathletes at 12:30. I looked up the pool address in a trip planner type thing on the transit website and followed those directions. Two trams and a bus later, I could not see a pool anywhere around. I stopped and asked a man on the street where the pool was and he told me that it was on the exact opposite side of town. By this time I was already late, so I decided just to go back to the school (which wasn’t easy to find either now that I was in the middle of nowhere!) When I got back to the school I stopped by the sports office to ask the students who run it if ... read more
