Day Nine…The Louvre and Other Paris Sights We have combined days nine and ten, because although we did a lot of sightseeing we thought you would only like the highlights. Day Nine…The sights we have seen today were unbelievable - The “Arc de Triumph”, The Louvre, and an evening cruise on the Seine (saw the light show at the Eiffel Tower). We found a Starbucks; it seems at the little cafés you have to pay for each cup of coffee so we added to the small cup during breakfast with a big Starbuck’s coffee. The “Arc de Triumph” was beautiful the traffic around the circle was a sight to behold. Twelve or more lanes of traffic all going in different directions. The Champs Elysèes was amazing… all kinds of shops and people. It looked like ... read more

Day Eight…Having fun in Paris Today was packed with surprises…Did you know that they run the French Peachtree Road Race? Well, we saw it today. Of course, it is run along the Seine River. It appeared to be as large as the Peachtree. The amazing part was that there were bands set up along the Seine. We took pictures of two of them. One band was playing “Mustang Sally” and the other was playing “Take me to the River.” Both in English….Amazing! Can you imagine bands at the Peachtree Road Race playing French songs? I don’t think that is going to happen. We toured the Orsay Museum. It was fantastic… Saw lots of women’s breast… We also visited Notre Dame and stood on the geographic center of Paris. There is a plague where which all distances ... read more

Day Seven... on the way to Paris Well it was a fairly uneventful trip until we tried to wash the car as instructed. How many Americans does it take to wash a car at a French carwash? Evidently more than two... I believe I broke the car wash, and Gail was so pleased. We had an exciting trip on the train from CDG airport...We got on the RER after consulting two different sources.. I would suggest that it was not the most pleasant journey. We changed from the RER to the Metro. The RER was straight forward; the Metro was a more difficult task. After walking up several stair cases with two suitcases (not Gail, me) we finally made it to the “Grand Hotel Leveque”. We found that escalators were not a priority and the ... read more

Day Six….A day of Chateaus We were able to see three great Chateaus today and all were totally different. Gail of course had some tense moments while I was driving through the country side and small towns. The first of the trio was Chateau de Chenonceau, which is right next door to our hotel. It is fantastic and was built around the 16th century and filled with many fantastic works of art. We really enjoyed the Chateau, but will not bore you with details (see the pix). The second was the Estate of Chambord. The Chateau was begun in 1515 and finally finished in the 1700’s. It is one of the largest in France and the one thought I brought away was “If one is concerned about the completion of things one will never begin”. The ... read more

Day Five: On to Chenonceaux This morning after breakfast in the charming breakfast room, we said goodbye to Monique Chartier and headed for Chenonceaux. The GPS has a mind of her own. Gail decided to drive today because there was not much traffic and we were on A6 (Autobahn)…She did take the car over 100 mph, but cars were passing us as if we were standing still. We had to get off the main road which then took us through this little bitty one road- town, Courtnay. She made it through the tiny streets with much prayer and screaming. The GPS then said to “turn right.” There was no road only a small lane (very small) so she would not turn…and she ended up in a trucking company parking lot. Huge trucks were turning everywhere around ... read more

Day four: Going to Beaune Today started early. Our room in our charming little hotel faced the street. They started emptying garbage cans around 5:00 AM. Of course, we both woke up and started the day. The best way I can describe the bathing situation is to say that it was a tub/shower. There was a tub, and a hand held shower nozzle, but there was no shower curtain. The best we could do was to squat in the tub, and spray our bodies. Larry had to help me rinse my hair, which was hysterical. I washed my hair before I realize that the blow-dryer was really a vacuum cleaner hose (see pix). (I forgot to mention that the first day in Stuttgart I turned my hair dryer on and it immediately burned out). We ... read more

Day 3……On the way to Colmar, France….after a fantastic breakfast with fantastic views we were on our way to Colmar, France. We had a little bit of a difficult road change which forced me into a power U-Turn, which brought me to an intersection which I found out was a no left turn intersection. This of course was a mere moment of excitement for Gail (she will kill me this year) after I made an illegal left turn and ran over some little bitty rubber things with reflectors on them that separated lanes (Alana tell Loraine she would be proud). Gail is now taking over…They were not little bitty, but tall, at least two feet maybe be bigger, reflectors…I could not believe that Larry ran over three of them… Thank goodness it did not hurt ... read more

Day two… October 5, 2009…The Day of the Car We left Stuttgart after breakfast and headed to Sindelfingen to pick up the car. The whole day consisted of setting up paper work, an informational presentation about the history of the Mercedes (more on this later), a factory tour, and finally getting the car. We imagine that the presentation was extremely informative; however, somehow we ended up in the German presentation. We were a little confused as to why they did not do one in English, but we just set there through the whole thing not understanding anything, but Tuscaloosa, Alabama (they made reference to their other facilities). Before the tour was to board the buses for the factory, they handed out headsets. At this point, we asked for headsets in English, the Mercedes presenter said, “You ... read more

The first day 10/4/09 - This is the first installment of Larry and Gail’s travel bog. The journey began by taking a flight on Delta operated by Northwest on a KLM plane. Jackie was kind enough to take us to the Marta - We started our “Celebration” of Gail’s Graduation (the Terminal Degree - Doctor (EDD)) going to Europe (Germany) for her Graduation Present (Mercedes - Benz) and “Celebration” of our 40 wonderful years of Marriage (Gail may see this a little differently) with a trip to Germany and France. John was nice enough to open up the Delta Crown Room for us and we met a member of the Old Geezers Band, Jack. We had a great conversation with him and we might try to get Heritage Sandy Springs to set them up for ... read more
