Geo: 48.1667, 7.29887Leaving Ronco is never easy. Matt said that next time we come, we should stay here for THREE WEEKS - don't tell him that we did that last time! - and Tom said if we left him behind, he could just eat with the zii, and would bespeaking Italian in no time. Martina told Georgia that she is the daughter that she never had - think that we all feel very much at home here. After packing up (how do we have so much stuff?), we slipped down to Losone to get money to pay the Bar Lucca for last night - and because this town is so small, we ran into Danny de Bortoli. We were parked, and I was looking at the iPad, and couldn't work out why the kids in the ... read more

We are starting to notice a change in the length of the sunlight as summer heads towards its closing stages, although we hope it hangs on for a while longer yet. Our room at the hotel doesn't get direct morning sun so it was a good excuse to sleep in a bit longer and also to give Gretchen more time of rest although she woke this morning feeling much improved, even on yesterday. We are heading today for an overnight stay close to the Swiss border and then tomorrow pop over into Basle and stay a night with Daniella who is a friend of our daughter,Leigh, they both having worked in a restaurant together while they were at University all those years ago.D moved earlier to Basle for a 3 year contract with her employer and at the time ... read more

I tell you something… the TVG moves like shit off a shovel! I know that’s not the most polite of statements but at an average 250 km per hour, it only took an hour and 10 minutes to get from Stuttgart to Strasbourg…not bad for going to another country. Strasbourg is the ideal city for a day visit. High tech, gorgeous train station with a clear road leading from it to the city centre. I love the fact that Strasbourg is in the region of Alsace and the people are called Alsatians!!!The river forms a circle round the old town and this is the heat of the city so that’s where I headed for. Beautiful old buildings and grand squares show that we have moved into a French inspired area. Finally the Cathedral Notre Dame is ... read more

Sunday August 11 2013 - Last night we talked about heading to the alps for the day, but never really made a good plan, so it seemed unlikely at best. By noon today, it was clear that wasn't going to happen, but we did make it out of the house actually. This is a huge improvement, as we tend to be the laziest people in the world on the weekends. Traveling, we are golden. At home, we become hermits with sloth-like tendencies. Jeroen thought it would be a good idea to drive to the Grand Ballon area, the tallest mountain in the Alsace in France. It is only an hour and a half from where we live, and yet I had never heard of it. Not surprising, as I have never heard of much around where ... read more

Strasbourg is another magnificent city. Our canal night tour provided wonderful an insight into its history. As we motored around the canal, we passed through two of the century old "locks". It was here we began to see some of the wooden framed alpine houses that you would find in Germany. Strasbourg is the home of European Parliament and Administration, and also where the first printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1436. La Cathedral, a work of gothic style magnificence, is splendid and a must visit. It's also noted that they have enclosed their century old railway station in glass dome. It is here that we were aware that we would experience the last of our French experience, but also where we began to notice the strong German influence. Au revoir mes amies!... read more

Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000167 EndHTML:0000002146 StartFragment:0000000457 EndFragment:0000002130 Our trip this year has started a little differently in that Guy flew to England at the end of May to facilitate MOTs, license renewals, completion of body work on the MH and to make arrangements for the shipping of our MH to the USA when our trip is completed. Jan (I ) was very involved in the Bowerman family celebrations including her granddaughter Elisabeth's high school graduation, LAX team captain recognition, and honors awards. Grandson Zachary's band and choral concerts and his high honors awards in school and boy scout acheivements were also very exciting. I was also able to hostess Rob's mother, Muriel for some of the festivities. The Bowermans have also been enjoying a trip to Seattle to visit Rob's family. All of this plus seeing my s ... read more

The nostalgia of revisiting Strasbourg Strasbourg, 10-26 May Seeing Strasbourg again over six years since I first arrived in 2007 was an intensely emotional and nostalgic experience. We stayed with JB’s parents in Colmar for a few days after Paris and by then I was itching to see Strasbourg again. The second we dropped our bags at JB’s sister’s place in Neudorf, just north of Strasbourg, we were out the door ready to see the city. It was only about a 30 minute walk, and despite having a tram stop directly downstairs I wanted to experience walking back into the centre the way I always used to. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my old place, to walk down those familiar streets, to revisit bars and cafes where I spent my time in ... read more

We spent one night in Strasbourg, and there happened to be a very colourful and loud parade of some sort going on through the streets. We watched them as they danced their way through the streets. Soon we lost interest and found ourselves browsing through the many cuckoo clock shops...we couldn't resist and some old French lady that couldn't speak a word of English somehow convinced us that we we absolutely NEEDED a Cuckoo clock, all wrapped and packed we proudly carried our new purchase around:) After that intense French/English Cuckoo purchase we were quite hungry and started a long search for a restaurant that offered a menu that we could understand... We finaly found one that offered "some" English descriptions... I decided to have a Cheeseburger, wow, adventurous you might think,,but it was the safest ... read more
