PROMENADE D’AUTOMNE…

As we were finishing up our last few days in Belgium, something unexpected happened that caused quite a bit of excitement. We had booked an apartment with Airbnb in the Alsatian town of Strasbourg, France. We had already purchased our train tickets on the super-fast TGV train and were making last minute departure plans when we got bad news. Our reservation had been cancelled! We have rented nearly 50 apartments during our travels and it was something we expected would happen sooner or later. Because we normally rent apartments for one month, it can be a little bit of a problem to find a place at the last minute. With just a few days left until we move, most apartments have at least a few days rented during the upcoming month, which means we are out ... read more

Day5: Reims to Mulhouse; Todays trip was taken over by the satnav. Avoid tolls and unpaved roads etc... The route took me mainly on high speed fantastic toll free dual carriageways. This seemed to be going well and was on target to arrive in Mulhouse around 2.30pm Mrs Satnav then noticed a traffic hold up ahead so quickly rerouted me through a quicker but longer non highway area of the "Parc naturel regional des ballons des Vosges" This diversion added nearly two hours to the journey but it was worth the diversion. Up until then the scenery had been nice but flat. The roads are well made well serviced light traffic and with the roof down on the Stag the journey was going along nicely if a little tedious. The diversion added a whole new dimension. ... read more

Geo: 48.5839, 7.74553 We woke up in Koblenz, Germany this morning and got ready for our excursion for the day. Stacy didn't feel well this morning and returned to the ship just before the bus left for Marksburg Castle. I soldiered on without her. The castle is one of a very few castles that was never destroyed. It is over 700 years old. It sat up on top of a large hill overlooking the Rhine River. I returned to the ship and we cast off for a day of sailing up the Middle Rhine River thru a gorge. There were 22 castles on the hilltops in this area dating from the 11th century. It was a spectacular voyage. Everyone was up on the observation deck, sitting in lounges and drinking beer and wine. For dinner, we ... read more

Charming Alsace. Can we move here? Can we? Can we? ?? M U L H O U S E Based for 4 lovely days in Obernai, we drove up and down La Route des Vins, admiring the endless, rolling vineyards, the mesmerizing villages, taking photos, buying tons of souvenirs and eating many Tartes Flambées☺! We visited Mulhouse last as it is at the very end of La Route des Vins and dedicated Strasbourg a whole day. These two cosmopolitan cities, jam packed with tourists as expected are a nice blending of old and new, modern and traditional, quaint and en vogue! The sun was setting when we got to the town square of Mulhouse after a long day sightseeing. A band was performing live and playing old and new covers. I had a lush strawberry mojito ... read more

La Route des Vins d'Alsace/Alsace Wine Route. Awestruck!Gobsmacked! Last year we saw a few of the famous Châteaux of the Loire Valley, for which sadly I did not write anything, but I've been very much infatuated with France ever since and had made a mental note to do further research on other cultural/touristy places that are worth visiting and it goes without saying that what France has to offer in terms of history, culture, sights is absolutely incredible! Breathtaking landscape and astonishing little villages galore. I am so much in love with this country, so very much! I love people's obvious sense of community, which is definitely something you work on for years and years, I love their idea of Villes et Villages Fleuris!!!! Basically, from what I understand, they have this annual contest between towns ... read more

Friday 22 July 2016 Travelling south, back towards Dijon, we stopped at Colmar for lunch. A very different entry welcomed us…the Statue of Liberty! After finding a carpark (what a marvel Neville is!) we wound our way on foot to a canal side restaurant, passing a variety of housing and shops along the way. Eight centuries of Germanic and French architecture feature in this colourfully eclectic town of the Alsace region. The flowers that line the canal were in abundance, adding charm to the shuttered housing behind. The town was founded in the 9th century and is also known as ‘Little Venice’ due to the number of canals that cross the river Lauch. We tried to find the Hansi Museum but aborted our attempts; the growing humidity was oppressive and rain was threatening. With car parks ... read more
